Download or read book 1812 written by Paul Britten Austen and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2012-12-03 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a third of a million men set out on that midsummer day of 1812: none can have imagined the terrors and hardships to come. They would be lured all the way to Moscow without having achieved the decisive battle Napoleon sought; and by the time they reached the city their numbers would already have dwindled by more than a third. One of the greatest disasters in military history was in the making. The fruit of more than twenty years of research, this superbly crafted work skilfully blends the memoirs and diaries of more than a hundred eyewitnesses, all of whom took part in the Grand Armys doomed march to Moscow, to reveal the inside story of this landmark military campaign. The result is a uniquely authentic account in which the reader sees and experiences the campaign through the eyes of participants at each stage of the advance in enthralling day-by-day, sometimes hour-by-hour detail.

Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. Coming all the way from Prussia, Colonel Heros von Borcke travelled further than many soldiers to join the Confederate cause, and was assigned to J.E.B. Stuart with whom he became firm friends. Stuart was to write of his giant Prussian companion in arms: “Capt. Heros von Borcke, a Prussian cavalry officer, who lately ran the blockade, assigned me by the honorable Secretary of War, joined in the charge of the First Squadron in gallant style, and subsequently, by his energy, skill, and activity, won the praise and admiration of all.” After much gallantry during the campaigns in Northern Virginia and Maryland, he was incapacitated early on during the Gettysburg campaign. Having recovered, he fought on at Stuart’s side until his commander’s death at the battle of Yellow Tavern. After the Civil War he retired back to his native lands in Germany where he flew the Confederate flag from the battlements. His memoirs of his adventures with the Confederate army are filled with exciting battle scenes, witty anecdotes of the personalities of the army and flavoured with an expert’s eye for military detail. Author — Colonel Heros von Borcke, 1835-1895. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1867. Original Page Count – viii and 438 pages.

Download or read book Fight For The Flags Illustrated Edition written by W. H. Fitchett and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 15 portraits and 14 maps W. H. Fitchett brings to life some of the most notable clashes of arms between the British and the various enemies that they have fought against, from Minden to the Crimean War, from Blenheim to Salamanca. “Fights for the Flag is as good as Deeds that Won the Empire. To say more than this in praise of the book before us is unnecessary, for Deeds that Won the Empire was one of the best collections of popular battle studies ever given to the public. Mr. Fitchett shows in Fights for the Flag all the good qualities which he showed in his first volume. There is the same admirable clearness of style, the same comprehensive sympathy, the same power to stir the blood and to paint noble deeds in fitting words. We note, too, the same excellent use of telling quotations. Whenever he can Mr. Fitchett gives what the Generals said in their own words, and not a mere rechauffé of their utterances. Thus Mr. Fitchett’s work, though necessarily short and compressed, is never dull. Again, he shows here, as in his former book, the same power of describing localities and for bringing before one the place of battle. No writer ever had more completely the art of making one realise how opposing forces move both by land and sea.”-The Spectator

Book excerpt: Includes 17 maps and the First World War Illustrations Pack – 73 battle plans and diagrams and 198 photos In this volume, Brigadier Ballard, provides a detailed biography and defence of his former commander, General Horace Smith-Dorrien. ‘With the outbreak of war Smith-Dorrien, who was a veteran of the 1879 Battle of Isandhlwana and the Second Boer War of 1899-1902, was given command of II Corps of Sir John French’s British Expeditionary Force (BEF). He was praised for his conduct during the Battles of Mons and Le Cateau in August 1914, and was given command of Second Army from December 1914 to April 1915. Smith-Dorrien fell foul of Sir John French, whom he little respected, during the Second Battle of Ypres, when he recommended a strategic withdrawal closer to Ypres, feeling that nothing short of a major counter-offensive was likely to regain the ground taken by the Germans during their offensive. French disagreed, dismissing Smith-Dorrien home to England upon the pretext of ill-health, and replacing him with Herbert Plumer, who ironically also recommended a withdrawal upon taking up his position; French accepted Plumer’s advice.’-Michael Duffy

This book was released on 2012-04-12 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opening of the First World War pitted the huge continental armies against each other; massed conscription filled their ranks, Britain’s soldiers, however, were to a man volunteer, long-service professionals. Disciplined, few in number but thoroughly trained to shoot 15 aimed shoots in a “mad-minute”, they were but few in number. The German forces they faced on the Western Front were counted by the number of their armies, the British forces could only put seven divisions in the field initially. In the face of overwhelming numbers the British soldiers gave a good account of themselves and held up the German advance during the crucial opening phases of the campaign alongside their French allies. The German High command had not counted on such stubborn resistance such a spanner in the works were they and their fighting prowess that the Kaiser himself paid the brave few the ultimate compliment— “It is my Royal and Imperial command that you concentrate your energies, for the immediate present, upon one single purpose, and that is that you address all your skill and all the valour of my soldiers to exterminate first the treacherous English and walk over General French's contemptible little army.”—Kaiser Wilhelm 19th August 1914. Written by Lord Hamilton, at the time a Captain in the 11th Hussars, this is an excellent and highly detailed account of the early months of the First World War on the British Front. Author — Captain Lord Ernest William Hamilton (1858-1939) Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in New York, E.P. Dutton and company 1916 Original Page Count – 338 pages. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes the Franco-Prussian Map Pack with over 35 maps, plans and diagrams of the engagements of the war Julius von Verdy du Vernois was a noted Prussian General and strategist, he served with great distinction in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 and participated in the climactic battle of Königgratz. He was appointed to the General Staff in 1867 as head of the intelligence section becoming a close assistant and confidant of the great Graf von Moltke. His chief fame rests on his service with the German Royal headquarters as one of high-ranking “demi-gods” of the General staff who enabled von Moltke to keep control of the massive German army as they destroyed the French armies so rapidly and successfully. “THESE “Personal Recollections of the War of 1870-71,” now first issued in book form, have already been partially published in articles which appeared in the “Deutsche Rundschau” in 1874 and 1895. Going again through my letters and the notes in my diary of that period, I have here and there added additional matter. “But still they are nowise intended to form an exhaustive description of the war, or even a complete record of personal experiences. Their publication is due to the renewed interest in those great events which the twenty-five years’ jubilee has awakened, and their object is a limited one, viz. to give an insight into the daily life of the Royal Headquarters Staff during those times. The opinions held and mental impressions formed at particular moments with regard to the great events of the war are recorded for the most part in the form in which they were noted down at the time, without regard to whether, in the light of better information, they subsequently proved correct or wide of the mark. For thus only can the “Recollections” give a faithful picture of the views obtaining at particular junctures.”- von Verdy
