Book The Fight With France for North America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fight With France for North America Classic Reprint written by A. G. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fight With France for North America The subject of this volume will, for the most part, I have reason to think, possess at least the merit of novelty for the general reader. The oblivion to which in this country the American War of Independence has been consigned is at least comprehensible. It had few dramatic features, and for us was not glorious, either in motive or conduct. But the earlier war with the French power in America was not only rich in picturesque detail and dramatic situation, but formed an important part of the most glorious and most epoch-making struggle in which Great Britain was ever engaged. Yet no English writer, using the term in its narrow sense, has seriously touched the subject since Warburton, early in the century, published his two admirable volumes on the Conquest of Canada. The well-known Canadian historian, the late Mr. Kingsford, has devoted a great part of volumes III. and IV. in his exhaustive history of the Dominion to the period in question. But it is idle to speak of what may be called in general terms books of reference (however interesting to the student), when the fascinating pages of the brilliant American, Francis Parkman, are only known to so comparatively small a circle of English readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from France and England in North America: A Series of Historical Narratives These form but a part of the surviving writ ings of the french-american Jesuits. Many additional reports, memoirs, journals, and let ters, official and private, have come down to us; some of which have recently been printed, while others remain in manuscript. Nearly every prominent actor in the scenes to be described has left his own record Of events in which he bore part, in the shape Of reports to his Superi ors or letters to his friends. I have studied and compared these authorities, as well as a great mass of collateral evidence, with more than usual care, striving to secure the greatest pos sible accuracy of statement, and to reproduce an image of the past with photographic clearness and truth. The introductory chapter of the volume is independent of the rest; but a knowledge of the facts set forth in it is essential to the full understanding of the narrative which follows. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French in America During the War of Independence of the United States, 1777-1783 Before going to Europe in 1859, my father edited, at the request of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, "Letters and Papers relating chiefly to the Provincial History of Pennsylvania" (1855), and for the Seventy-Six Society "The Examination of Joseph Galloway" (1855), and "Papers Relating Chiefly to the Maryland Line During the Revolution" (1857). In sifting the manuscripts from which the materials for these volumes were drawn, his attention was called to the fact that the share which France had taken in the establishment of the independence of the United States had not been thoroughly studied or fairly narrated. His interest in the subject was awakened; and, accordingly, upon his arrival in the French capital, he at once began collecting books, engravings or other materials, with the view of preparing a work which should be a careful history of the part that France took in the war of independence of the United States. In addition to the materials upon the subject that my father collected in the United States, and several original manuscripts - as that of Dupetit Thouars, for instance - that he obtained in France, be bad access, through his many French friends - many of whom were descendants of those gallant gentlemen who crossed the ocean to aid us win our independence - to a large and valuable, in many cases till then unused, collection of documents. A description of the more important of these manuscripts will be found in the second chapter of this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Battle Honour: North America, 1763-64 The British colonist was usually a farmer or trader and not a fighting man, Whereas the French Canadian, if not a regular soldier, was usually a Woodsman or trapper and a natural fighter. It was largely on this account that, despite the British population in North America being to the French as 13 to 1, France was so long able to maintain her position in the Continent. Another factor that helped the French was that. Canada was an autocratically governed Colony Whose whole resources could be utilized by the administration as required. The British had occupied their territory by gradual expansion inland from the coast, first by making treaties with the original Owners of the soil, which gave them jurisdiction over large areas, and later by purchasing the actual land from the Indians, which was then occupied by companies or settlers and cultivated. Although the French claimed possession Of immense tracts of country in Canada and Louisiana, they purchased no land from the Indians and cultivated only small areas round their older settlements. Such wealth as they acquired was almost entirely due to their fur trade, and they troubled little about commerce or agriculture. To facilitate the traffic in furs, the French pushed far inland, erecting small posts and forts'at certain important points that either controlled a natural route or waterway, or gave facilities to their fur traders to deal direct with the native hunters. These have been given by me from time to time to the Massachusetts Historical Society, in whose library they now are, open to the examination of those interested in the subjects of which they treat. The collection was begun forty-five years ago, and its formation has been exceedingly slow, having been retarded by difficulties which seemed insurmountable, and for years were so in fact. Hence the completion of the series has required twice the time that would have sufficed under less unfavorable conditions.
