Book excerpt: “As technology threatens to displace countless jobs and skills, the ability to communicate is becoming more important than ever. This book is full of examples to help you get better at transporting your thoughts and emotions into the minds of other people.” —Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take, Originals, and Option B with Sheryl Sandberg How to master the art of persuasion—from the bestselling author of Talk Like TED. Ideas don’t sell themselves. As the forces of globalization, automation, and artificial intelligence combine to disrupt every field, having a good idea isn’t good enough. Mastering the ancient art of persuasion is the key to standing out, getting ahead, and achieving greatness in the modern world. Communication is no longer a “soft” skill—it is the human edge that will make you unstoppable, irresistible, and irreplaceable—earning you that perfect rating, that fifth star. In Five Stars, Carmine Gallo, bestselling author of Talk Like TED, breaks down how to apply Aristotle’s formula of persuasion to inspire contemporary audiences. As the nature of work changes, and technology carries things across the globe in a moment, communication skills become more valuable—not less. Gallo interviews neuroscientists, economists, historians, billionaires, and business leaders of companies like Google, Nike, and Airbnb to show first-hand how they use their words to captivate your imagination and ignite your dreams. In the knowledge age—the information economy—you are only as valuable as your ideas. Five Stars is a book to help you bridge the gap between mediocrity and exceptionality, and gain your competitive edge in the age of automation. In Five Stars, you will also learn: -The one skill billionaire Warren Buffett says will raise your value by 50 percent. -Why your job might fall into a category where 75 percent or more of your income relies on your ability to sell your idea. -How Airbnb’s founders follow a classic 3-part formula shared by successful Hollywood movies. -Why you should speak in third-grade language to persuade adult listeners. -The one brain hack Steve Jobs, Leonardo da Vinci, and Picasso used to unlock their best ideas.

Book excerpt: The highly-anticipated finale to the New York Times bestselling 5th Wave series. Includes an exclusive diary entry from Cassie! The enemy is Other. The enemy is us. They’re down here, they’re up there, they’re nowhere. They want the Earth, they want us to have it. They came to wipe us out, they came to save us. But beneath these riddles lies one truth: Cassie has been betrayed. So has Ringer. Zombie. Nugget. And all 7.5 billion people who used to live on our planet. Betrayed first by the Others, and now by ourselves. In these last days, Earth’s remaining survivors will need to decide what’s more important: saving themselves . . . or saving what makes us human. Praise for The Last Star “Yancey’s prose remains achingly precise, and this grows heavier, tighter, and more impossible to put down as the clock runs out…this blistering finale proves the truth of the first two volumes: it was never about the aliens.”—Booklist, starred review “A haunting, unforgettable finale.”—Kirkus Reviews “Yancey doesn’t hit the breaks for one moment, and the action is intense, but the language always stays lyrical and lovely. It’s a satisfying end to an impressive trilogy, true to the characters and the world Yancey created.”—Entertainment Weekly “Yancey has capped off his riveting series with a perfect ending.”—TeenReads.com “[T]he ending provides both satisfaction and heartbreak.”—Publishers Weekly “Yancey's writing is just as solid and descriptive as in the first two books….What Yancey does beautifully is reveal the human condition.”—Examiner.com "Rick Yancey sticks the (alien) landing in the action-packed finale to his The 5th Wave invasion saga . . . . And the author gives us a major dose of girl power as well, pairing Cassie and Ringer for an uneasy alliance that provides the best moments in this fantastic series’ thought-provoking and satisfying conclusion.”—USA Today Praise for The 5th Wave Now a major motion picture starring Chloë Grace Moretz "Remarkable, not-to-be-missed-under-any-circumstances."—Entertainment Weekly "A modern sci-fi masterpiece . . ."—USAToday.com "Wildly entertaining . . . Many years later Maxine Hong Kingston wrote a Fourth Book of Peace, but it too was burned--in the catastrophic Berkeley-Oakland Hills fire of 1991, a fire that coincided with the death of her father. Now in this visionary and redemptive work, Kingston completes her interrupted labor, weaving fiction and memoir into a luminous meditation on war and peace, devastation and renewal.

Book The Fifth Cleavage

Download or read book The Fifth Cleavage written by Giovanni Barbieri and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth Cleavage: Genealogy of the Populist Ideology proposes an in-depth analysis of populism, as one of the central phenomena in the contemporary public and political debate. In particular, this study aims to investigate the causes of the emergence of populism and its possible effects on the political system and on the democratic institutions. The central thesis of the book is that populism is originated by a cleavage between two opposite groups – the people and the elite – which appeared for the first time soon after the democratic revolutions of the 17th and 18th centuries. This cleavage is not constantly active; but it tends to reactivate itself only under certain circumstances, when certain critical junctures occur, thus giving rise to different “waves” of populism. When the “populist cleavage” is active, the other lines of division and conflict (of class, of religion, etc.) lose their relevance. What are the features of this cleavage? What kind of relationship does it have with the well-known traditional cleavages (capital-labor, state-church, urban-rural, center-periphery)? What are the characteristics of the recent “wave” of populism? And what are its effects on the functioning of democracy? These are the main questions to which this book is devoted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the tumultuous events of January 6, 2021, ‘The Fifth Horseman Manifesto’ emerges as a gripping political thriller, plunging readers into a world where democracy teeters on the edge of destruction. At its heart is Webster Kilgallen, an enigmatic octogenarian billionaire who views the insurrection as a dire omen—a modern manifestation of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, signaling the demise of American democracy. He views himself as the ‘Fifth Horseman’ who intends to confront the Four Horsemen and preserve democracy. Fueling the flames of chaos, Kilgallen unveils a chilling plan: he offers a staggering bounty on the Dark Web, targeting five influential ‘enablers’ whom he deems to be ‘clear and present dangers’ threatening the very fabric of the American Constitution. Dubbed ‘The Fifth Horseman Manifesto’, this manifesto becomes a catalyst for a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, where loyalties blur and betrayal looms around every corner. Caught in the crosshairs is Caitlin Kilgallen, fiercely protective of her father yet desperate to uncover his secrets. Her quest intertwines with Bastian Boudreaux, her father's confidant, whose allegiance is tested as the hunt for the Fifth Horseman intensifies. As the manifesto sends shockwaves through society, it sets in motion a dangerous chain of events. Adrien Escarra, a disillusioned Afghan veteran, sees an opportunity to redeem himself by pursuing Kilgallen's bounties, while James de Lacy III, the newly appointed FBI Director, races against time to thwart the looming threat. But the plot thickens when Victor Krassman, a titan of industry and one of Kilgallen's own targets, enters the fray, unleashing a wave of greed and betrayal that threatens to consume them all. In this deadly dance of power and deceit, principles crumble beneath the weight of avarice, friendships dissolve into enmity, and loyalties are shattered in a chilling tale of suspense.
