Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I have seen yesterday. I know tomorrow.” This inscription in Tutankhamun’s tomb summarizes The Fifth Beginning. Here, archaeologist Robert L. Kelly explains how the study of our cultural past can predict the future of humanity. In an eminently readable style, Kelly identifies four key pivot points in the six-million-year history of human development: the emergence of technology, culture, agriculture, and the state. In each example, the author examines the long-term processes that resulted in a definitive, no-turning-back change for the organization of society. Kelly then looks ahead, giving us evidence for what he calls a fifth beginning, one that started about AD 1500. Some might call it “globalization,” but the author places it in its larger context: a five-thousand-year arms race, capitalism’s global reach, and the cultural effects of a worldwide communication network. Kelly predicts that the emergent phenomena of this fifth beginning will include the end of war as a viable way to resolve disputes, the end of capitalism as we know it, the widespread shift toward world citizenship, and the rise of forms of cooperation that will end the near-sacred status of nation-states. It’s the end of life as we have known it. However, the author is cautiously optimistic: he dwells not on the coming chaos, but on humanity’s great potential.

Book The Fifth History of Man

Download or read book The Fifth History of Man written by John Bershof, MD and published by skynetMD, LLC. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spirit of medieval writer Chaucer, all human activity lies within the artist’s scope, the History of Man Series uses medicine as a jumping off point to explore precisely that, all history, all science, all human activity since the beginning of time. The jumping off style of writing takes the reader, the listener into worlds unknown, always returning to base, only to jump off again. History of Man are stories and tales of nearly everything. The Fifth History of Man has a few parting shots at viruses but mostly continues with the world of parasites, from tick disease that tick us off, Old Lyme, Connecticut and Lyme disease, toxoplasmosis, Crazy Cat Lady and her clowder of cats, then on into a discussion of the avatar of parasites: malaria. Our travels will venture down into the valley: Valley Girls, Valspeak, Valley Fever, fungus and fungal infections. We’ll jump into the biology of evolution, Darwin, Huxley and the great debates, the geology of earthquakes, volcanos, the Ring of Fire, and Johnny Cash, and then through the homos: Homo habilis, Homo erectus, and Homo sapiens, and once the dust cleared how the opposable thumbs, walking erect, and bigger brains left one man standing, one woman, too. No discussion of human history can leave out the G.O.A.T. of French history, heck, of European history; the man, the legend, Napoleon Bonaparte, loved and admired by everyone, even his enemies. Our path will take us into war & military, World War I versus the 1918 Swine Flu, some Russian history and how Stalin got Lenin wrong.

Book Was There a Fifth Man

Download or read book Was There a Fifth Man written by Wilfrid Basil Mann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was There a Fifth Man? Quintessential Recollections presents the author's personal account of his professional life as an experimental physicist in the service, at different times, of each of the three countries that joined forces at the Quebec Conference in 1943 to produce the atom bomb. The author has been identified, though always in a way which was just short of actionable, with the so-called ""Fifth Man"" of the long-running British spy saga. For his sake and that of his family, he felt duty-bound to set the record straight before myth had time to trespass on history. Making extensive use of dated correspondence and publications, he shows precisely where he was at the times that an individual called ""Basil"" was supposed to have been operating in collusion with Donald Maclean at the British Embassy in Washington. He claims that the misfit between ""Basil"" and himself is epitomized by the fact that when Basil was supposed to be entering the scene in Washington for an extensive sojourn, the author was actually leaving Washington for the United Kingdom.

Book The Fifth Monarchy Men

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernard Capp
  • Publisher : Faber & Faber
  • Release : 2012-03-15
  • ISBN : 0571286860
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book The Fifth Monarchy Men written by Bernard Capp and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Fifth Monarchy Men (Faber, 1972), Professor Capp places the movement in the context of the rise of millenarian thought in Europe from the Reformation and its rapid spread in England during the Civil Wars. For many radicals, the execution of King Charles cleared the way for King Jesus, and heralded the establishment of a revolutionary millennium. The apparent apostasy of the Rump Parliament and Oliver Cromwell channelled part of the wave of millenarian feeling into the formation of a specific sect. This first comprehensive study of the Fifth Monarchists movement traces its history and examines its social, political, legal and religious proposals. Although it had the support of some gentry and army officers, it was essentially an urban movement of artisans, apprentices, and even labourers, reaching lower down the social scale than any contemporary radical movement, with the possible exception of the Diggers. Professor Capp discusses its structure, and its relationship to other revolutionary sects, notably the Levellers and Quakers. He analyses the social, political and economic programmes of the self-styled saints which, though revolutionary, were elitist rather than equalitarian. The Fifth Monarchists' militant foreign policy was shaped by the twofold consideration of exporting the revolution and of strengthening the position of English trade. Their much-derided call for the re-establishment of the Mosaic Code is the culmination of a long tradition of such thinking amongst Puritan and earlier writers. Appendices provide biographies of almost 280 Fifth Monarchists and the location of all known Fifth Monarchist groups.

Book Fifth Age of Man An Adventure in Time and Space Through the History of Humankind

Download or read book Fifth Age of Man An Adventure in Time and Space Through the History of Humankind written by Søren Møller and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time is ripe to embrace a proper understanding of the origin and history of humankind. Evolution is regarded as a fact of life because we think that Darwin's theory on the slow and gradual transmutation of species by the means of natural selection in the struggle for life has been proven beyond doubt. The fact, however, is that Darwinism has nothing to do with science. It is a convergence of Uniformitarianism and Atheism, and the theory is unscientific, as Karl Popper (one of the 20th century's most influential philosophers of science) demonstrated, because it cannot be falsified. It belongs to the realm of metaphysics. Nevertheless, we see the world we live in through the lens of Charles Darwin, and this is the reason why we today view our early progenitors as primitive, stooping, ape-like halfwits. My own view is that world mythology holds the key to a proper understanding of our own origin and history. The present volume is meant as a small contribution to that end. Featuring 258 photographs, illustrations and maps.
