Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fifteenth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education, Vol. 3: The Junior High School Yet during the same period there were those who proposed to attack the problem from another angle, who insisted that the real solution lay in the division of the twelve years equally between elementary and secondary education. The essential difference be tween these two parties was that, whereas the one was desirous of: destroying the rigidity of the grade system, thereby allowing more rapid progress over the same curriculum for groups of able students, the other would introduce high-school methods and subjects into the seventh and eighth grades and subjugate the existing curriculum to a process of condensation and elimination. In printing, the papers have been grouped as indicated above. It seems unnecessary with this report in hand to argue in favor of the use of the more precise methods of measurement which have recently been developed. Those interested in the improvement of our schools have always attempted by some method or other to estimate the effi ciency of individual schools or school systems. Often this measurement has been based upon an Opinion not acceptable to another student or investigator, and not frequently upon attempts to measure which have been extremely crude. The examination system as we have commonly had it, not only has been responsible for judgments with respect to the efficiency of schools, or Of school systems, but has also determined in very considerable measure in most school systems the progress of children. In the studies which are reported here, more precise measures give to the student of education a better basis in knowledge of conditions upon which to base his criticism or to develop his improved method Of instruction or administration. The measurement Of results of any sort, whether of the achievements in School subjects, of the cost of any unit or function, or of the rate of progress, and the like, furnishes primarily a knowledge of the situation which makes clear the problems involved, and which may suggest a method of experiment that looks toward the improvement desired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eighteenth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education, Vol. 1 It is only by participating and by reacting in terms of some ongoing procedure that self-activity is possible. Section I is offered as a slight contribution in the hope that a genuinely democratic education may be a developing program with us, yielding, as it should, to the solvent of new social reagents in the making Of the responsible person, capable of realizing the fullest self-expression consistent with public welfare. This, it is believed, constitutes the basis of our democracy. The public school is to be, in a far clearer sense than ever before, the practicing ground of our democracy. Download or read book The Eighteenth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education written by M. Whipple and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eighteenth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education, Vol. 1 As early as 1904, the National Society, in its Third Yearbook, took up the discussion of problems connected with the preparation of teachers. This was continued the following year in Part I of the Fourth Yearbook ("The Education and Training of Secondary Teachers"), while closely related discussions have appeared in the Fifth Yearbook, Part II ("The Certification of Teachers") and in the Fourteenth Yearbook, Part II ("Methods for Measuring Teachers' Efficiency"). In 1914, Professor S. C. Parker, then Secretary of the Society, suggested to Professor H. L. Miller that he present to the Society an account of the methods developed by him at the University of Wisconsin for the preparation of secondary-school teachers. Later Professor Miller consented to act informally as "chairman" of a group of persons who should cooperate in the production of a Yearbook dealing with the, "Organization and Administration of Practice Schools Generally." This undertaking expanded in various directions until it became necessary, from practical expediency, to limit the scope of the project for the time, being to the training of high-school teachers only. We have been fortunate enough in this connection to arrange for the inclusion with Professor Miller's group of a report of a Committee of the Society of College Teachers of Education that was investigating the use of practice schools in training high-school teachers The prevent Yearbook, then, comprises three sections. In Section I appears Professor Miller's original manuscript describing the plan of preparing teacher at the University of Wisconsin. This plan is novel enough to challenge the attention of all readers, since it involves a theory of classroom procedure applicable to any high school, whether concerned with teacher training or not. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tenth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education, Vol. 1: Part I, the City School as a Community Center; This Yearbook Will Be Discussed at the Mobile Meeting of the National Society, Wednesday, February, 22, 1911, 7: 30 P. M This yearbook is planned to include accounts of actual experiments that have been tried in making the school a community center, so that other communities may learn of the possibilities and difficulties of putting into practice what has already been achieved in some of the most advanced communities. At the National Education Association meet ing for 1902 (p. 373 of Proceedings) John Dewey discussed very ably the theoretical aspects of the problem as requested, but said: I do not feel that the philosophical aspect of the matter is the urgent or important one. The pressing thing, the Significant thing, is really to make the school a social center; that is, a matter of practice and not of theory. Just what to do in order to make the schoolhouse a center of full and adequate social service, to bring it completely into the current of social life - such are the matters I am sure which really deserve the attention of the public and occupy your own minds.
