The artists brother, James Roger Brown, did over thirty years of ancestral research which provided the inspiration for the stories and legends within Fields of Clover. The author and his brother are both MFA graduates of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sadly his brother, an internationally acclaimed artist, passed away in 1997 shortly after finishing his ancestral work, entitled Autobiography in the Shape of Alabama II. This ancestral work fully documented and paid homage to our grandfather and his mother, Mary Dizenia Palmer. It is my intention withFields of Clover to honor these ancestors as well as my brother who did so much to make this book a reality.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Field of Clover: Engraved by Clemence Housman For a good while Noodle lived on just what he could find in the house, in a hand-to-mouth sort of way, till at last only the furniture and the four bare walls were left to him. One cold winter's night he sat brooding over the fire, wondering where he should get food for the morrow, when he heard feet coming up to the door, and a knock striking low down upon the panel. Out side there was a faint chirping and crack ling sound, and a whispering as of fire licking against the woodwork without. Book excerpt: Book Excerpt: ...at hand and inviting to the eye was a well with a bucket slung ready to be let down. Noodle had little thought of seeking for the owner of the garden to beg for a drink, since water is an equal gift to all and the right of any man; but as he drew near he found the means to it withheld from him, the lid being fast locked. He went on in search of the owner, till at length he came upon the same lying half asleep under a thorn-bush with the key in her hand. She was an old woman, so withered and dry, she looked as if no water could have ever passed her lips. When Noodle asked for a drink from the well, she looked at him bright and sharp, and said: 'Before any man drinks of my water he must make a bargain with me.' 'What is the bargain?' asked Noodle; and she led him down to the well. Then she unlocked the lid and bade him look in; and at the sight Noodle knew for a second time that his heart had been stolen from him, and that to be happy he must taste that water or die...

Book THE FIELD OF CLOVER Fairy Tales for Children

Download or read book THE FIELD OF CLOVER Fairy Tales for Children written by Laurence Housman and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of fairy tales: “The Bound Princess” (a longer work in six parts), “The Crown’s Warranty,” “The Wishing Pot,” “The Feeding of the Emigrants,” and “The Passionate Puppets.” The Field of Clover is a collaboration between Laurence and Clemence Annie Housman, brother and sister. Laurence wrote the text and drew the original illustrations, which were then engraved by Clemence. Also, the subject matter of the book demonstrates the Victorian fascination with the supernatural and themes of transformation. Women recite spells to turn into flowers; a great worm drinks a boy’s breath through a magical ring. The language is rich and vivid, and the stories themselves often impart moral lessons. The Field of Clover, along with several of Laurence Housman's other works, was collected into a larger volume called Moonshine & Clover by the New York printers Harcourt, Brace, & Company, in 1922 -------------------------- Laurence Housman turned more and more to writing after his eyesight began to fail. His first literary success came with the novel An Englishwoman's Love-letters (1900), published anonymously. His other dramatic works include Angels and Ministers (1921), Little Plays of St. Francis (1922) and Victoria Regina (1934) which was even staged on Broadway. Housman's play, Pains and Penalties, about Queen Caroline, was produced by Edith Craig and the Pioneer Players. In his time he wrote 10 novels and 25 pieces of short fiction, including fairy tales, 54 plays, 13 volumes of verse and at least 23 pieces of non-Fiction. --------------------------- KEYWORDS/TAGS: Field of Clover, Fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, storyteller, childrens stories, fables, bound princess, fire-eaters, galloping plough, thirsty well, princess melilot, burning rose, camphor worm, crown's warranty, wishing-pot, feeding, emigrants, passionate, puppets, Laurence Housman, Clemence Housman, illustrations, engravings, collaboration, moonshine,
