Book A Holocene Geoarchaeological Record for the Upper Willamette Valley Oregon

Download or read book A Holocene Geoarchaeological Record for the Upper Willamette Valley Oregon written by Brian Leander O'Neill and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological investigations at the Chalker (35LA420) and Long Tom (35LA439) sites were prompted by the Oregon Department of Transportation's plan to realign a segment of the Florence-Eugene Highway (OR 126) between the communities of Noti and Veneta. When these sites were discovered in the proposed new highway corridor, additional survey and testing was done to identify an alternate route that would avoid the sites. For every new alignment examined, however, additional significant cultural sites were encountered. While the final construction design avoided most of the identified sites, impacts on two, the Chalker and Long Tom sites, were found to be unavoidable. Data recovery excavation at these two sites was accomplished during the summer and fall of 1986, and is reported here.

Book Hard Times and New Deal in Kentucky

Download or read book Hard Times and New Deal in Kentucky written by George T. Blakey and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Depression and the New Deal touched the lives of almost every Kentuckian during the 1930s. Fifty years later the Commonwealth is still affected by the legacies of that era and the policies of the Roosevelt administration. George T. Blakey has written the first full study of this turbulent decade in Kentucky, and he offers a fresh perspective on the New Deal programs by viewing them from the local and state level rather than from Washington. Thousands of Kentuckians worked for New Deal programs such as the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Projects Administration; thousands more kept their homes through loans from the Home Owners Loan Corporation. Tobacco growers adopted new production techniques and rural farms received their first electricity because of the Agricultural Adjustment and Rural Electrification administrations. The New Deal stretched from the Harlan County coal mines to a TVA dam near Paducah, and it encompassed subjects as small as Social Security pension checks and as large as revived Bourbon distilleries. The impact of these phenomena on Kentucky was both beneficial and disruptive, temporary and enduring. Blakey analyzes the economic effects of this unprecedented and massive government spending to end the depression. He also discusses the political arena in which Governors Laffoon, Chandler, and Johnson had to wrestle with new federal rules. And he highlights social changes the New Deal brought to the Commonwealth: accelerated urbanization, enlightened land use, a lessening of state power and individualism, and a greater awareness of Kentucky history. Hard Times and New Deal weaves together private memories of older Kentuckians and public statements of contemporary politicians; it includes legislative debates and newspaper accounts, government statistics and personal reminiscences. The result is a balanced and fresh look at the patchwork of emergency and reform activities which many people loved, many others hated, but no one could ignore.

Book Aerial Archaeology

Download or read book Aerial Archaeology written by Robert Bewley and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not attempts to find prehistoric artifacts in the atmosphere, but the use of aerial photography to aid investigations on the ground, was the topic of the November 2000 NATO workshop in Lezno, Poland. The 35 papers cover whether lessons have been learned over the past 100 years, achievements toward understanding archaeological landscapes, opening up new landscapes, future technological applications, heritage management, and whether a meta-aerial archaeology is necessary to clarify the relationship between technology and philosophy. Included are 111 color plates, but no index. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

Book Landscape in the Longue Dur e

Download or read book Landscape in the Longue Dur e written by Christopher Tilley and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pebbles are usually found only on the beach, in the liminal space between land and sea. But what happens when pebbles extend inland and create a ridge brushing against the sky? Landscape in the Longue Durée is a 4,000 year history of pebbles. It is based on the results of a four-year archaeological research project of the east Devon Pebblebed heathlands, a fascinating and geologically unique landscape in the UK whose bedrock is composed entirely of water-rounded pebbles. Christopher Tilley uses this landscape to argue that pebbles are like no other kind of stone – they occupy an especial place both in the prehistoric past and in our contemporary culture. It is for this reason that we must re-think continuity and change in a radically new way by considering embodied relations between people and things over the long term. Dividing the book into two parts, Tilley first explores the prehistoric landscape from the Mesolithic to the end of the Iron Age, and follows with an analysis of the same landscape from the eighteenth into the twenty-first century. The major findings of the four-year study are revealed through this chronological journey: from archaeological discoveries, such as the excavation of three early Bronze Age cairns, to the documentation of all 829 surviving pebble structures, and beyond, to the impact of the landscape on local economies and its importance today as a military training camp. The results of the study will inform many disciplines including archaeology, cultural and art history, anthropology, conservation, and landscape studies.
