Book Innovative Infrastructure Finance

Download or read book Innovative Infrastructure Finance written by Can Chen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrastructure is the foundation of modern economies. A robust, efficient, and well-maintained infrastructure system is critical to support the nation’s economy, improve quality of life, and strengthen global competitiveness. The serious infrastructure deficit in the U.S. is well-known. State and local governments are struggling to finance the needed expansion, upgrades, and repairs. Meeting the infrastructure financing challenge has emerged as one of the most urgent issues facing the country. Despite the growing number of innovations in state and local infrastructure financing, current information on innovative infrastructure financing is scattered and time-consuming to find. Until now, there was no detailed, comprehensive assessment of current knowledge and practice in innovative infrastructure financing. This book fills that gap and offers policy suggestions for state and local government managers who are considering the adoption and implementation of innovative infrastructure financing. It provides detailed case studies and rich examples that describe innovative approaches to fund state and local infrastructure development. These experiences and lessons in applying these innovations will be particularly useful for state and local government practitioners, professors, applied policy analysts, and students in public administration, policy, and public finance.

Book Getting More Out of State Transportation Infrastructure Spending

Download or read book Getting More Out of State Transportation Infrastructure Spending written by Tracy Miller and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent trends suggest that the federal role in funding highways is likely to decline in the future. As a result, state and local governments will likely shoulder a larger portion of the costs of building and maintaining roads and highways. Like the federal government, however, many states do not employ their transportation revenues as efficiently as they could. In this study, we explore changes states could make to allow surface transportation dollars to go further, thereby better serving taxpayers and road users alike. Specifically, we examine how states can reduce costs created by regulations, can better allocate transportation funds to their most highly valued use, and can strengthen the link between driversņ willingness to pay and the amount spent on transportation infrastructure. We also explore the role that changes in incentives could play in reducing congestion; improving development patterns; and contributing to a more efficient mix of streets, roads, and public transportation infrastructure.

In addition, the authors make recommendations for core functions in public health assessment, policy development, and service assurances, and identify the level of government--federal, state, and local--at which these functions would best be handled.

Book The Role of Local Government in Economic Development

Download or read book The Role of Local Government in Economic Development written by Jonathan Q. Morgan and published by Unc School of Government. This book was released on 2009 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses the findings from a mail survey of local government economic development activities that was sent to all 540 municipalities and 100 counties in North Carolina. An important part of the analysis examines whether cities and counties differ significantly in their economic development efforts and whether smaller jurisdictions employ different types of development strategies and tools than larger ones. The survey findings also highlight the barriers that local governments face in promoting economic development and identify important technical assistance needs and gaps in local capacity.

Book Economic Analysis and Infrastructure Investment

Download or read book Economic Analysis and Infrastructure Investment written by Edward L. Glaeser and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Policy-makers often call for expanding public spending on infrastructure, which includes a broad range of investments from roads and bridges to digital networks that will expand access to high-speed broadband. Some point to near-term macro-economic benefits and job creation, others focus on long-term effects on productivity and economic growth. This volume explores the links between infrastructure spending and economic outcomes, as well as key economic issues in the funding and management of infrastructure projects. It draws together research studies that describe the short-run stimulus effects of infrastructure spending, develop new estimates of the stock of U.S. infrastructure capital, and explore the incentive aspects of public-private partnerships (PPPs). A salient issue is the treatment of risk in evaluating publicly-funded infrastructure projects and in connection with PPPs. The goal of the volume is to provide a reference for researchers seeking to expand research on infrastructure issues, and for policy-makers tasked with determining the appropriate level of infrastructure spending"--

Book The Increasing Use of Federal Earmarks to Fund Local Infrastructure

Download or read book The Increasing Use of Federal Earmarks to Fund Local Infrastructure written by Karen Kunz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local governments have long relied on their ability to issue public debt to fund long-term public works projects. In Illinois, increasing fiscal stress within local and state government has hampered many communities' ability to take on additional credit obligations. As a result, municipalities are increasingly looking to their federal legislators for financial assistance with their public works projects. This study uses federal appropriations legislation and earmark reports, supplemented by survey data and personal interviews with federal, state and local elected officials and agency executives, to explore Illinois' municipal governments' use of federal earmarks to finance local infrastructure needs.

Book U S INFRASTRUCTURE Agencies Approaches to Developing Investment Estimates Vary

Download or read book U S INFRASTRUCTURE Agencies Approaches to Developing Investment Estimates Vary written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The federal government has spent an average of $149 billion (in constant 1998 dollars) annually since the late 1980s on the nation s infrastructure. A sound public infrastructure plays a vital role in encouraging a more productive and competitive national economy and meeting public demands for safety, health, and improved quality of life. For example, transportation systems directly support the nation's economy by facilitating the movement and manufacture of goods. Public office buildings, courthouses, and other facilities support noneconomic goals and allow federal agencies to carry out their missions. At least a portion of federal financed infrastructure has benefits that accrue primarily to the states and local communities rather than the nation as a whole. In addition, state and local governments and the private sector play important roles in developing, operating, and financing significant portions of infrastructure. The federal government plays a prominent role in identifying the nation s infrastructure investment needs. Little, however, is known about the comparability and reasonableness of individual agencies estimates for infrastructure needs. In fact, even the concept of infrastructure need is difficult to define and to distinguish from wish lists of capital projects. This report responds to your request for information on infrastructure investment or needs estimates compiled by six federal agencies the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and General Services.

Book The Future of the Public s Health in the 21st Century

Download or read book The Future of the Public s Health in the 21st Century written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anthrax incidents following the 9/11 terrorist attacks put the spotlight on the nation's public health agencies, placing it under an unprecedented scrutiny that added new dimensions to the complex issues considered in this report. The Future of the Public's Health in the 21st Century reaffirms the vision of Healthy People 2010, and outlines a systems approach to assuring the nation's health in practice, research, and policy. This approach focuses on joining the unique resources and perspectives of diverse sectors and entities and challenges these groups to work in a concerted, strategic way to promote and protect the public's health. Focusing on diverse partnerships as the framework for public health, the book discusses: The need for a shift from an individual to a population-based approach in practice, research, policy, and community engagement. The status of the governmental public health infrastructure and what needs to be improved, including its interface with the health care delivery system. The roles nongovernment actors, such as academia, business, local communities and the media can play in creating a healthy nation. Providing an accessible analysis, this book will be important to public health policy-makers and practitioners, business and community leaders, health advocates, educators and journalists.
