Book Strengthening Post Hurricane Supply Chain Resilience

Download or read book Strengthening Post Hurricane Supply Chain Resilience written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resilient supply chains are crucial to maintaining the consistent delivery of goods and services to the American people. The modern economy has made supply chains more interconnected than ever, while also expanding both their range and fragility. In the third quarter of 2017, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria revealed some significant vulnerabilities in the national and regional supply chains of Texas, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The broad impacts and quick succession of these three hurricanes also shed light on the effectiveness of the nation's disaster logistics efforts during response through recovery. Drawing on lessons learned during the 2017 hurricanes, this report explores future strategies to improve supply chain management in disaster situations. This report makes recommendations to strengthen the roles of continuity planning, partnerships between civic leaders with small businesses, and infrastructure investment to ensure that essential supply chains will remain operational in the next major disaster. Focusing on the supply chains food, fuel, water, pharmaceutical, and medical supplies, the recommendations of this report will assist the Federal Emergency Management Agency as well as state and local officials, private sector decision makers, civic leaders, and others who can help ensure that supply chains remain robust and resilient in the face of natural disasters.

Book Will a Twenty first Century Logistics Management System Improve Federal Emergency Management Agency Capability to Deliver Supplies to Critical Areas During Future Catastrophic Disaster Relief Operations

Download or read book Will a Twenty first Century Logistics Management System Improve Federal Emergency Management Agency Capability to Deliver Supplies to Critical Areas During Future Catastrophic Disaster Relief Operations written by Glenda A. Gill and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) must be prepared at all times to supplement state and local emergency personnel, or to provide logistics support during disaster relief operations. A significant number of people criticized FEMA slow response to Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. Based on lessons learned, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff stated in his testimony to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on 15 February 2006, that FEMA ability to get supplies to the needed areas in a timely manner was limited because its logistics systems were not adequate for an enormous catastrophic disaster. Secretary Chertoff also stated the first step to improving FEMA capability was to work with other federal agencies and private businesses to create a twenty-first century logistics management system. According to the Logistics Management Support Annex of the Federal Response Plan, dated January 2003, managing logistics is a process of planning, preparing, implementing, and evaluating all logistics functions in support of an activity or operation. This thesis will define a twenty-first century logistics management system, examine FEMA logistics management system during Hurricane Katrina, and determine what changes must occur to strengthen it. Finally, recommendations will be made on how FEMA can provide quality logistics support for future catastrophic disaster relief operations.

Book Environmental Health Ethics

Download or read book Environmental Health Ethics written by David B. Resnik and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-11 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Health Ethics illuminates the conflicts between protecting the environment and promoting human health. In this study, David B. Resnik develops a method for making ethical decisions on environmental health issues. He applies this method to various issues, including pesticide use, antibiotic resistance, nutrition policy, vegetarianism, urban development, occupational safety, disaster preparedness, and global climate change. Resnik provides readers with the scientific and technical background necessary to understand these issues. He explains that environmental health controversies cannot simply be reduced to humanity versus environment and explores the ways in which human values and concerns - health, economic development, rights, and justice - interact with environmental protection.
