Book The Feasibility of Producing Aluminum Lithium Structures for Cryogenic Tankage Applications by Laser Beam Welding

Download or read book The Feasibility of Producing Aluminum Lithium Structures for Cryogenic Tankage Applications by Laser Beam Welding written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum-lithium alloys exhibit high strength, high elastic modulus, and low density as well as excellent cryogenic mechanical properties making them ideal material candidates for cryogenic tanks. NASA has proposed the use of 'built-up' structure for panels fabricated into cryogenic tanks replacing current conventional machining. Superplastically formed stiffeners would be joined to sheet (tank skin) that had been roll formed to the radius of the tank in order to produce panels. Aluminum-lithium alloys of interest for producing the built-up structure include alloy 2095-T6 stiffeners to 2095-T8 sheet and alloy 8090-T6 stiffeners to 2090-T83 sheet. Laser welding, with comparable joint properties, offers the following advantages over conventional welding: higher production rates, minimal degradation within the heat affected zones, and full process automation. This study established process parameters for laser beam welding, mechanical property determinations, metallographic characterization, and fabrication of prototype panels. Tensile tests representing partial penetration of the skin alloys provided joint efficiencies between 65 and 77 percent, depending upon alloy and degree of penetration. Results of tension shear tests of lap welds indicated that the combination of 2095-T6 to 2090-T8 exhibited significantly higher weld shear strength at the interface in comparison to welds of 8090-T6 to 2090-T83. The increased shear strength associated with 2095 is believed to be due to the alloy's ability to precipitation strengthening (naturally age) after welding. Martukanitz, R. P. and Lysher, K. G. Book Aluminum Lithium Alloys

Download or read book Aluminum Lithium Alloys written by N Eswara Prasad and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because lithium is the least dense elemental metal, materials scientists and engineers have been working for decades to develop a commercially viable aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloy that would be even lighter and stiffer than other aluminum alloys. The first two generations of Al-Li alloys tended to suffer from several problems, including poor ductility and fracture toughness; unreliable properties, fatigue and fracture resistance; and unreliable corrosion resistance. Now, new third generation Al-Li alloys with significantly reduced lithium content and other improvements are promising a revival for Al-Li applications in modern aircraft and aerospace vehicles. Over the last few years, these newer Al-Li alloys have attracted increasing global interest for widespread applications in the aerospace industry largely because of soaring fuel costs and the development of a new generation of civil and military aircraft. This contributed book, featuring many of the top researchers in the field, is the first up-to-date international reference for Al-Li material research, alloy development, structural design and aerospace systems engineering. - Provides a complete treatment of the new generation of low-density AL-Li alloys, including microstructure, mechanical behavoir, processing and applications - Covers the history of earlier generation AL-Li alloys, their basic problems, why they were never widely used, and why the new third generation Al-Li alloys could eventually replace not only traditional aluminum alloys but more expensive composite materials - Contains two full chapters devoted to applications in the aircraft and aerospace fields, where the lighter, stronger Al-Li alloys mean better performing, more fuel-efficient aircraft

Book Hybrid Laser Arc Welding

Download or read book Hybrid Laser Arc Welding written by F O Olsen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-06-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hybrid laser-arc welding (HLAW) is a combination of laser welding with arc welding that overcomes many of the shortfalls of both processes. This important book gives a comprehensive account of hybrid laser-arc welding technology and applications. The first part of the book reviews the characteristics of the process, including the properties of joints produced by hybrid laser-arc welding and ways of assessing weld quality. Part two discusses applications of the process to such metals as magnesium alloys, aluminium and steel as well as the use of hybrid laser-arc welding in such sectors as ship building and the automotive industry. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Hybrid laser-arc welding is a valuable source of reference for all those using this important welding technology. - Reviews arc and laser welding including both advantages and disadvantages of the hybrid laser-arc approach - Explores the characteristics of the process including the properties of joints produced by hybrid laser-arc welding and ways of assessing weld quality - Examines applications of the process including magnesium alloys, aluminium and steel with specific focus on applications in the shipbuilding and automotive industries

Book Weldability of High strength Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Weldability of High strength Aluminum Alloys written by Robert Melvin Evans and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memorandum describes the fusion-welding characteristics, mechanical properties, and stress-corrosion behavior of high-strength, weldable aluminum alloys. These are defined as alloys in which sound welds can be produced and in which at least 50 and 70 percent of the maximum base-metal strength can be retained in the as-welded and post-weld-treated conditions, respectively. Careful selection of joining method and filler metals as well as close control of joining-process parameters is necessary to produce high-strength aluminum weldments. Highest strengths and weld-joint efficiencies in high-strength weldable alloys are achieved with the use of postweld aging and/or mechanical treatments. The best combination of highest strengths and good welding characteristics is found in the 2000 and 7000 alloy series. As compared with the 2000 and 5000 alloy series, the 7000 alloy as a class suffer three major property disadvantages: (1) their tendency to be notch sensitive, (2) their tendency to exhibit low toughness at low temperatures, and (3) their much greater susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking. Nonetheless, several relatively new 7000 series alloys have been developed which show reasonably good notch toughness to -423 F and which are considered competitive with the 2219 and 2014 alloys for cryogenic applications. Book Engineering Materials 2

Download or read book Engineering Materials 2 written by Michael F. Ashby and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a thorough explanation of the basic properties of materials; of how these can be controlled by processing; of how materials are formed, joined and finished; and of the chain of reasoning that leads to a successful choice of material for a particular application. The materials covered are grouped into four classes: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Each class is studied in turn, identifying the families of materials in the class, the microstructural features, the processes or treatments used to obtain a particular structure and their design applications. The text is supplemented by practical case studies and example problems with answers, and a valuable programmed learning course on phase diagrams.
