Book excerpt: Millions of people are moving from rural areas to coastal cities. Meeting the basic human needs for protein foods in the future will be a difficult challenge. Fishery products are the world's most important source of animal protein, which has led to a doubling of the demand for fish since the 1950s. As we can not expect to catch more food from the sea, we must turn to farming the waters, not just hunting them. The new challenge for planners now is to accelerate aquaculture development and to plan for new production, making urban areas of production, particularly recycled urban wastewater. This book includes papers from authors in the U.S., Europe, and Asia that review these developing issues from the perspective of both developed and developing countries.

Book Scallops Biology Ecology and Aquaculture

Download or read book Scallops Biology Ecology and Aquaculture written by Sandra E. Shumway and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 1501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scallops are among the better known shellfish and are widely distributed throughout the world. They are of great economic importance, support both commercial fisheries and mariculture efforts and occupy a unique niche in the marine environment. Contributions from world leaders in scallop research and culture cover all facets of scallop biology including anatomy, taxonomy, physiology, ecology, larval biology and neurobiology. Chapters are also devoted to diseases and parasites, genetics, population dynamics and the adductor muscle, with extensive reference lists provided for each chapter. Since the publication of the first edition of Scallops: Biology, Ecology and Aquaculture in 1991, commercial interest in scallops has grown globally and this is reflected in the seventeen extensive chapters covering both fisheries and aquaculture for all species of scallops in all countries where they are fished or cultured. The Second Edition is the only comprehensive treatise on the biology of scallops and is the definitive reference source for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, mariculturists, managers and researchers. It is a valuable reference for anyone interested in staying abreast of the latest advances in scallops. * Offers over 30 detailed chapters on the developments and ecology of scallops* Provides chapters on various cultures of scallops in China, Japan, Scandinivia, Eastern North American, Europe, and Eastern North America* Includes details of their reproduction, nervous system and behavior, genetics, disease and parasites, and much more* Complete updated version of the first edition

Book Biological and Economic Feasibility of Four Grow out Methods for the Culture of Giant Scallops in the Bay of Fundy

Download or read book Biological and Economic Feasibility of Four Grow out Methods for the Culture of Giant Scallops in the Bay of Fundy written by D. J. Wildish and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four final grow-out methods for culture of the giant scallop were tested in small, pilot scale trials at two locations near St. Andrews, N.B. With all of these methods: long-lines anchored by concrete blocks, weir-pole stakes, benthic cages and benthic relaying, it was biologically feasible to produce market-size giant scallops. Site differences in predator mortality of benthic scallops were evident, suggesting the need to choose sites with low predation pressure. The benthic cages proved to be susceptible to predators; this could be rectified in future by reducing the hole size of the cage walls. Fouling of all cages, except benthic cages, was an operational problem in the Bay of Fundy. Growth rates of all suspended cultures inclusive of benthic cages involved an approximately 15-mo period, following intermediate culture of 1 yr in pearl nets, to reach marketable size of 90-mm shell height; versus -36-48 mo for scallops placed directly on the sediment surface. Based on our pilot scale experience, we have attempted an economic analysis of each final grow-out method employed. The economic feasibility is for the period 1987-1996 and based on 1987 prices. The analysis assumes a 5% annual increase in cost of labor and materials and predicts a 6.55% annual increase in landed price of scallops. Ten-year predictions show that only one of the four grow-out methods, benthic relaying, to be economically feasible
