Book THE FAST MULTIPLICATION EFFECT OF BERYLLIUM OXIDE IN REACTORS

Download or read book THE FAST MULTIPLICATION EFFECT OF BERYLLIUM OXIDE IN REACTORS written by and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The net multiplication effect of beryllium oxide, which is due to the (n,2n) reaction, was calculated using an essentially exact calculation of the neutron spectrum as a function of energy. The upper limit of the (n,2n) cross section curve gives the unpoisoned value epsilon /sup +/ = 1.047 and the lower limit gives epsilon /sup -/ = 1,027. The behavior of the Li/sup 6/poisoned fast multiplication effect as a function of the number of collisions was studied for both beryllium and beryllium oxide. (auth).

Book Neutron Physics for Nuclear Reactors

Download or read book Neutron Physics for Nuclear Reactors written by Salvatore Esposito and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume gives an accurate and very detailed description of the functioning and operation of basic nuclear reactors, as emerging from yet unpublished papers by Nobel Laureate Enrico Fermi. In the first part, the entire course of lectures on Neutron Physics delivered by Fermi at Los Alamos is reported, according to the version made by Anthony P French. Here, the fundamental physical phenomena are described very clearly and comprehensively, giving the appropriate physics grounds for the functioning of nuclear piles. In the second part, all the patents issued by Fermi (and coworkers) on the functioning, construction and operation of several different kinds of nuclear reactors are reported. Here, the main engineering problems are encountered and solved by employing simple and practical methods, which are described in detail. This seminal work mainly caters to students, teachers and researchers working in nuclear physics and engineering, but it is of invaluable interest to historians of physics too, since the material presented here is entirely novel.

Book The Status of Beryllium Research for Fusion in the United States

Download or read book The Status of Beryllium Research for Fusion in the United States written by Glen R. Longhurst and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of beryllium in fusion reactors has been considered for neutron multiplication in breeding blankets andas an oxygen getter for plasma-facing surfaces. Previous beryllium research for fusion in the United Statesincluded issues of interest to fission (swelling and changes in mechanical and thermal properties) as well asinteractions with plasmas and hydrogen isotopes and methods of fabrication. When the United States formallywithdrew its participation in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) program, much ofthis effort was terminated. The focus in the U.S. has been mainly on toxic effects of beryllium and on industrialhygiene and health-related issues. Work continued at the INEEL and elsewhere on beryllium-containingmolten salts. This activity is part of the JUPITER II Agreement. Plasma spray of ITER first wall samples atLos Alamos National Laboratory has been performed under the European Fusion Development Agreement. Effects of irradiation on beryllium structure are being studied at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Numericaland phenomenological models are being developed and applied to better understand important processes and toassist with design. Presently, studies are underway at the University of California Los Angeles to investigatethermo-mechanical characteristics of beryllium pebble beds, similar to research being carried out atForschungszentrum Karlsruhe and elsewhere. Additional work, not funded by the fusion program, has dealtwith issues of disposal, and recycling.
