Book excerpt: The Farragut Naval Training Station, located near Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, was only operational between 1942 and 1946, but during that time it was the largest city in Idaho, the largest business in Idaho, and the second-largest U.S. naval training station. Download or read book Nature s Northwest written by William G. Robbins and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, the greater Northwest was ablaze with change and seemingly obsessed with progress. The promotional literature of the time praising railroads, population increases, and the growing sophistication of urban living, however, ignored the reality of poverty and ethnic and gender discrimination. During the course of the next century, even with dramatic changes in the region, one constant remainedÑ inequality. With an emphasis on the regionÕs political economy, its environmental history, and its cultural and social heritage, this lively and colorful history of the Pacific NorthwestÑdefined here as Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and southern British ColumbiaÑplaces the narrative of this dynamic region within a national and international context. Embracing both Canadian and American stories in looking at the larger region, renowned historian William Robbins and Katrine Barber offer us a fascinating regional history through the lens of both the environment and society. Understanding the physical landscape of the greater Pacific NorthwestÑand the watersheds of the Columbia, Fraser, Snake, and Klamath riversÑsets the stage for understanding the development of the area. Examining how this landscape spawned sawmills, fish canneries, railroads, logging camps, agriculture, and shared immigrant and ethnic traditions reveals an intricate portrait of the twentieth-century Northwest. Impressive in its synthesis of myriad historical facts, this first-rate regional history will be of interest to historians studying the region from a variety of perspectives and an informative read for anyone fascinated by the story of a landscape rich in diversity, natural resources, and Native culture.

Book Miracle in the South Pacific

Download or read book Miracle in the South Pacific written by Robert J. Loyd and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943, Robert Loyd was a sixteen-year-old without a drivers license or a car who had just moved to St. Louis from the countryside. The Uncle Sam Wants You! posters hanging in every public building enticed him to lie about his age and join the fight. After graduating from the program at Farragut Naval Training Station, he was assigned to overhauling the USS Dewey, a destroyer, in Bremerton, Washington. When the Dewey was deemed seaworthy, his group received orders to join the Third Fleet in the Pacific and arrived in Honolulu in October 1943. The next months were spent in and around Ulithi atoll in the Western Caroline Islands, protecting and escorting the fleets carriers, tankers, and cruisers. In December 1944, the Dewey weathered a powerful typhoon, her crew lashed to their bunks or to stanchions, as the ship was tossed by winds and rain and finally righted itself after an eighty-degree roll. After repairs, the ship rejoined the fleet in February 1945 and supported the invasion of Iwo Jima. The Dewey was decommissioned in October 1945, and the author returned to civilian life in May 1946.

Book The Hundred Year Stretch and Beyond

Download or read book The Hundred Year Stretch and Beyond written by Doris Chapin Bailey and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least twice in the past thirty years I have described to my grandson, Aaron, what I consider to be a remarkable fact of personal history. If I stand with my arms outstretched and hold my right hand with my daughter Jans left and she holds her right hand with Aarons left and then my mother, Lena, holds my left hand with her right hand and my grandfather James Henry Andersen, her father, holds her left hand with his right hand, there will be five immediately related people standing in a row stretching one hundred years. My grandfather was born in 1879 to my left and my grandson was born in 1979 to my right. I find this fact starkly but exhilaratingly interesting from a number of different perspectives.
