Book Shakespearean Gothic

Download or read book Shakespearean Gothic written by Christy Desmet and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the paradox that the Gothic (today’s werewolves, vampires, and horror movies) owe their origins (and their legitimacy) to eighteenth-century interpretations of Shakespeare. As Shakespeare was being established as the supreme British writer throughout the century, he was cited as justification for early Gothic writers’ fascination with the supernatural, their abandoning of literary “decorum,” and their fascination with otherness and extremes of every kind. This book addresses the gap for an up to date analysis of Shakespeare’s relation to the Gothic. An authority on the Gothic, E.J. Clery, has stated that “It would be impossible to overestimate the importance of Shakespeare as touchstone and inspiration for the terror mode, even if we feel the offspring are unworthy of their parent. Scratch the surface of any Gothic fiction and the debt to Shakespeare will be there.” This book therefore addresses Shakespeare’s importance to the Gothic tradition as a whole and also to particular, well-known and often studied Gothic works. It also considers the influence of the Gothic on Shakespeare, both in-print and on stage in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain. The introductory chapter places the chapters within the historical development of both Shakespearean reception and Gothic Studies. The book is divided into three parts: 1) Gothic Appropriations of “Shakespeare”; 2) Rewriting Shakespearean Plays and Characters; 3) Shakespeare Before/After the Gothic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vladimir Nabokov's famous and brilliant commentary on Pushkin's Eugene Onegin When Vladimir Nabokov first published his controversial translation of Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin in 1964, the great majority of the edition was taken up by Nabokov’s witty and exhaustive commentary. Presented here in its own volume, the commentary is a unique scholarly masterwork by one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers—a work that Nabokov biographer Brian Boyd calls “the most detailed commentary ever made on” Onegin and “indispensable to all serious students of Pushkin’s masterpiece.” In his commentary, Nabokov seeks to illuminate every possible nuance of this nineteenth-century classic. He explains obscurities, traces literary influences, relates Onegin to Pushkin’s other work, and in a characteristically entertaining manner dwells on a host of interesting details relevant to the poem and the Russia it depicts. Nabokov also provides translations of lines and stanzas deleted by the censor or by Pushkin himself, variants from Pushkin’s notebooks, fragments of a continuation called “Onegin’s Journey,” the unfinished and unpublished “Chapter Ten,” other continuations, and an index. A work of astonishing erudition and passion, Nabokov’s commentary is a landmark in the history of literary scholarship and in the understanding and appreciation of the greatest work of Russia’s national poet.

Download or read book The English Novel 1770 1829 1800 1829 written by Peter Garside and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography provides the first complete and copy-based record of the production of new English fiction in the period 1810-1829. The main listings include 2,256 entries, all but forty of which are based on examination of a first edition of the actual novel described. As a result of ten years of Anglo-German co-operation the bibliography makes especial use of the recently discovered collection of English novels of Schloss Corvey in Germany, whose holdings in English fiction 1796-1834 almost certainly exceed those held by any other library. This book also includes an extensive historical introduction by Peter Garside that offers a comprehensive overview of the main aspects of production, marketing and reception of fiction in the Romantic era.
