  • Pages : 76 pages

Download or read book My Uncle Sam written by Len Jenkin and published by Dramatists Play Service Inc. This book was released on 1984 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncle Sam was a novelties salesman who died one night, alone and broke, in a Pittsburgh hotel. But he was also a larger-than-life figure, a mythic hero, to his nephew who now seeks to discover his uncle's true story. His quest is a quixotic and picaresque one, involving a seductive nightclub singer who promises to marry Sam if he can locate his ne'er-do-well brother (who absconded with the proceeds from a robbery), and developing into a series of sometimes funny, sometimes hair-raising episodes as the nephew "becomes" his uncle in his youth and journeys to a remote lighthouse, a rather sinister university laboratory, an opium den, the clinic of a Mexican quack, and a very odd miniature golf course all intriguingly distorted, as though viewed through a funhouse mirror. In the end it is really the landscape of the mind that is explored and illuminated, as the trail leads back to Old Sam and the disquieting knowledge that dreams and reality are, in the final essence, often one and the same, with the "truth" still remaining tantalizingly out of reach.

Book 200 Themes for Devising Theatre with 11 18 Year Olds

Download or read book 200 Themes for Devising Theatre with 11 18 Year Olds written by Jason Hanlan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique resource for drama teachers providing 200 stimuli and age-appropriate individual topics within those to help inspire and guide young people in devising performance. It contains useful information on devising techniques, workshops, schemes and lesson ideas for introducing devising and guidance on how to analyse the work and give feedback. Following on from his successful book 200 Plays for GCSE and A-Level Performance, author Jason Hanlan has once again solved one of drama teachers' most frequently encountered problems: how to unlock the best devised performance with their students. Devising as a group requires a level of collaboration, which - without a strong framework - often descends into wild flights of fancy and a myriad of dead ends. Excellent ideas can be lost or diluted in an often-awkward attempt to tie it all together to fit a narrative. The main body of this book is a unique numbered listing of 200 stimuli, designed to both inspire and focus the mind, with an example of a possible topic and 'ways in' that would be suitable for each level: "Civil rights" Each stimuli is given its own page dedicated to exploring its possibilities as a piece of devised theatre for different age groups, and offering suggestions for plays, films and books to look at; artefacts and images to examine; ideas to consider; and further research you can draw on.

Book A Preface to Shakespeare s Comedies

Download or read book A Preface to Shakespeare s Comedies written by Michael Mangan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an informative and interesting guide to the comedies of love - The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Taming of the Shrew, Love's Labour's Lost, A Midsummer Nights Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like it and Twelfth Night - which were written in the early part of Shakespeare's career. As well as supplying dramatic and critical analysis, this study sets the plays within their wider social and artistic context. Michael Mangan begins by considering the social function of laughter, the use of humour in drama for handling social tensions in Elizabethan and Jacobean society and the resulting expectations the audience would have had about comedy in the theatre. In the second section he discusses the individual plays in the light of recent critical and theoretical research. The useful reference section at the end gives the reader a short bibliographic guide to key historical figures relevant to a study of Shakespeare's comedies and a detailed critical bibliography.

Book Rustbelt Fables

  • Author : Isaac Hallenberg
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2008-08-21
  • ISBN : 9781462806898
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Rustbelt Fables written by Isaac Hallenberg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-08-21 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the authors third book, the first being a memoir of sorts and the second was in the genre of erotic fiction. It is a collection of thirteen short stories, all based on or inspired by the fables of Aesop. Although it would be impossible to either add to or detract from Aesops, the fables were starting points for stories mostly based in the mythical town of Rustbelt City. Apparently, as much wisdom is required for life in the American Midwest as in ancient Greece. And, just as in our own lives, there is a moral hidden somewhere in each of the stories. Unlike in the compilers of Aesops stories where the morals are handily given to us, well have to ferret out the meaning for ourselves. Instead of anthills and agoras, the scenes shift from pagan Greece to pool halls and Fitzpatricks tavern. Not so cleverly disguised are locales once dear to my heart in a grimy, industrial city that now exists only in my imagination.
