Book The Farm Outlook for 1939 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Outlook for 1939 The total supply of all feedstuffs will again be large for the winter and spring feeding seasons as a result of a good growing season and a large supply of grain and hay carried over from last year. The hay supply is the largest since 1927. The probability is that this ample supply of feed will result in further expansion in livestock production in 1939. The number of hogs, especially, is on the mercase. Sheep numbers also are increasing. On the other hand, the tendency is to hold back cows and heifers to build up bi ceding herds, and there probably will be a smaller total slaughter of cattle and calves in 1939 than in 1938. The dairy industry apparently is beginning to expand again. The decline in number of milk cows which started in 1934 has been checked and the number of heifers now on hand indicates an increase in milk herds next year and still more in 1940. The poultry industry also is expanding. The number of laying hens in 1939 is expected to be about 10 percent larger than during 1938, and with a favorable feed situation, egg production also will be heavier. The number of horses and mules has been declining until there are only about half as many on farms as there were in 1915. The decline probably will go on for several more years. Prices, however, have dropped somewhat this past year and colts raised to be sold 2 or 3 years hence are likely to meet a still less favorable price situation. Book The Demand and Price Situation

Download or read book The Demand and Price Situation written by U. S. Bureau Of Agricultural Economics and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Demand and Price Situation: November 1937 The domestic demand for farm products probably will not be as favorable in 1958 as in 1957. This outlook is based upon prospective trends in industrial activity, consumer incomes and the general price level. Since 1955 industry has been experiencing a general cyclical rise, which has been halted in the fall of 1957. Although it is impossible to determine definitely to what extent the present recession will continue into 1958, the chances appear to be against a sufficiently early and vigorous rise to bring the averages of industrial activity and of consumer incomes for 1958 up to those for 1957. The general upswing of a major business cycle usually is characterized by shorter periods of recession during which business sentiment becomes less opti mistic, security prices decline, business men postpone extensive commitments, and the general uncertainty leads to hesitant buying by potential consumers of many products. Stocks of finished and semi-finished merchandise may accumulate in dealers' hands, and orders received by manufacturers decline as buying is placed on a hand-to - mouth basis. Business has entered such a phase in the latter part of 1957, as a result of conditions which have been discussed in recent issues of the Demand and Price Situation. There is reason to believe, however, that this recession does not mark the beginning of a severe and prolonged depression. Book The Price Situation

Download or read book The Price Situation written by U. S. Bureau Of Agricultural Economics and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Price Situation: January, 1937 Recent changes in market prices of farm commodities indicate that the general level of prices received by farmers made a substantial rise from mid December to mid-january. Advances occurred in prices of hogs, cattle, lambs, wheat, corn, oats, rice, butter, wool, and potatoes, With marked declines occurring only in the prices of poultry and eggs. World wheat prices continued to advance during December as a result of heavy purchases by European countries in order to build up stocks. Wheat prices in domestic markets advanced about the same as world prices. Strength in wheat prices during the next month will continue to depend largely on the aggressiveness of European buying. With the relatively close adjustment this season between world supplies and consumption, the newly harvested wheat crop from Argentina and Australia may be absorbed Without becoming much of a price depressing factor. The advances in feed grain prices since late October are largely explained by the comparatively rapid rate of disappearance of feed grains, a substantial increase in livestock prices, and an upward movement in wheat and rye prices. In View of small January 1 stocks of feed grains and a favorable outlook for livestock prices, feed grain prices are expected to re nnin at about the current high level during the next month or so. The down ward movement ih rice prices which started in the summer months continued to the end of 1936. Increased production in California and the Southern States was largely responsible for declining prices. In the first week of January prices of southern rice advanced materially, and there are some indications that the low point for the 1956-57 marketing year may have been passed. So Mr. Slocum believes that We can increase per capita consumption by improving the quality of our poultry products. People will eat more eggs and more poultry if they can get plenty of eggs and poultry of high quality. But if the market is cluttered up with large quantities of low - grade stuff, consumption lags. Right now the outlook is encouraging. The whole trend is toward the high - quality goal. For instance, individual packers of poultry are constantly striving to improve their products -to put on the market a product of better and evener quality. As they succeed in doing so they give greater consumer satisfaction and they can sell to better advantage. Private initiative of this sort has already brought about great im provement in poultry packs. And now the federal government and various states are helping out, too. The Bureau of Agricultural Economics, for instance, has established an inspection service which is supplied upon request, and a grading service. The grading service, carried out in Cooperation with states, was Widely used during the Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey market season.
