Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hey, Everyone! I’m Jessie Gussman and I write love stories. I guess some people think that a writer’s life is glamorous. Especially a romance writer. This book was written to disabuse that notion. I’m kidding. That’s not the purpose of this book, although it’s a definite effect. It’s true that I’m a USA Today bestselling author, which, I have to admit, surprises me as much as anyone. My husband and I also own a trucking company. We have two twenty thousand bird free-range laying houses (our eggs are probably in your grocery store!), raise grass-fed beef cattle, homeschool our kids and are on a first-name basis with the Game Warden and the state police (mostly because of the kids and not really my husband). I frequently cook for strangers, occasionally hide from my family and own more fire extinguishers than the average person (for good reason). Sometimes, when I sit down at my computer, instead of writing the next chapter in my latest romance, I write about my life. Sometimes it’s fun. Sometimes funny. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking and sometimes you just see life through the eyes of a farmer, growing older every day and maybe just a little wiser. We do a lot of laughing, some crying and every day is a learning experience wrapped in the love of God and held in His hand. That’s what I share with you in this book. Thanks so much for spending some time with me today! Love, Jessie Reviews for The Farm on Naked Creek: ★★★★★ "Jessie is an author that can make getting bunted by a cow or helping a cow have a calf interesting and educational. She has so much faith and her kindness always shows thru. Her books and emails just put a smile on your face - she has a way to balance when things may not go the way intended but she has a positive attitude and is a Wonderful Author." - Bets ★★★★★ "Jessie has a way with words that grab you and hold you in each story so much that will have you laughing, wishing you were there to see it in person. When you start this book, be prepared to sit down, get a drink, get comfortable and be sure to have a snack because once you start you won't get up for quite a few hours and it is well worth it." - KRP ★★★★★ "I have never laughed so hard! I have always enjoyed receiving Jessie Gussman's newsletters as they pull me right in, make me feel like I am right there, and make me laugh a lot. I enjoyed this book as it is a collection of those wonderful newsletters with everything from stories about her children, God, her faith, and the farm and farm animals. I will warn you that you will be laughing a lot too. It is just impossible not to." - lori ★★★★★ "I do not review a great many non-fiction or contemporary books but Jessie Gussman is an author I admire. In this charming book, you will be invited into her home. Get yourself a cup of coffee to enjoy as this author share humor and wisdom into what life on the farm really is. Her faith shines through so brightly! I think this was a wonderful book and a big thank you to the author for sharing." - Crystal ★★★★★ "This book had me laughing out loud in parts. Jessie writes in a way that it feels like you're there. You can seriously picture what she's writing!" - Amber Books in the Stories from Jessie Gussman's newsletter series: 1. Chickens in Canaan Land 2. The Farm on Naked Creek 3. Beef Below the Blue Ridge 4. Stories from the Promised Land

Download or read book Chickens in Canaan Land A romance novelist talks about raising cows kids and chaos on the family farm Stories from Jessie Gussman s newsletter written by Jessie Gussman and published by Jessie Gussman. This book was released on 2021-02-14 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hi! I’m Jessie Gussman and I get emails all the time from people who spewed their coffee/half-chewed toast/cereal out all over their e-reader. Or who woke up their spouse while reading my newsletter because they were laughing so hard. Or who save my emails until they get home from work because they don’t have the kind of job where howling and rolling on the floor is acceptable conduct. But not every story in this book is laugh-out-loud funny. Some of them will make you cry. Some will make you think. And some of them will make you shake your head and wonder how in the world someone like me has made it through life without being put in a straight jacket and carted away. Not even close. I get paid to write love stories. Lol Life is weird, I agree. I’m a wife, mother and farmer by day, romance novelist by night and in my spare time, I write about my life from prison. Kidding about the prison part. (At the time of this writing, anyway. No one has figured out if there was actually a body in the car that’s buried in my dad’s back yard – that story’s in the book, along with the time I caught myself on fire and my kid was laughing too hard to blow me out, how to charge a 1600 pound, angry mama cow (and why you’d want to), odd Amish courting rituals (involving frogs), and how not to fall out of your husband’s Peterbilt as he’s driving down the interstate.) There is a lot of faith, family and fun in my fiction books, and WARNING: my real life has a ton of all that, too. But life on the farm is not always fun. Sometimes it’s hard and sometimes it hurts and those stories are in here, too. Thanks so much for choosing to spend a little time with me today! Love, Jessie Reviews for Chickens in Canaan Land: ★★★★★ "This book of newsletters is actually better described as a collection of short, real-life stories by Jessie that will leave you snorting with laughter, and sometimes, struggling with tears. " - Mari ★★★★★ "I absolutely love Jessie Gussman’s books and I always thought we should have to pay for her newsletters, but thank heavens we don’t. This is a book I highly recommend even if you’ve never read a Jessie book you still enjoy the stories of living on the farm being the mother of four and others and the relationship with her and her husband. An absolute treat." - Janalyn ★★★★★ "I've been reading this book to my husband whenever we're riding in his truck together. We're both loving it! Many laugh out loud moments!" - Amber ★★★★★ "This is a faith-based writing that is so touching that it not only will inspire the reader but entertain you in a clean and wholesome way. Jessie’s real-life stories about her family and life on their farm made my day! This really is a must-read charmer!" - Crystal ★★★★★ "This book had me laughing out loud, crying, and wondering how in the world people can live with themselves sometimes. I truly don't know when Jessie finds time in her life to write, but when she does, it's an experience. I love Jessie's honesty, spirit, love, generosity, human-ness, kindness, parenting style, relationship with God." - Janet Books in the Stories from Jessie Gussman's newsletter series: 1. Book The People of the New River

Download or read book The People of the New River written by Leland R. Cooper and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Said to be one of the oldest rivers in the world, the New River begins at two locations in Watauga County in northwest North Carolina. From there the North and South Forks meander north through Ashe County until they meet near the Virginia border and continue through a corner of Alleghany County before turning north again into Virginia and West Virginia and on to the Ohio. Settlers came to the fertile bottom lands along the New River during the 18th and 19th centuries and many of their descendants still live there today. In this collection of oral histories, 33 people in Ashe, Alleghany, and Watauga counties—most of whom are in their 70s, 80s, and 90s—share memories of their lives and work on the New River and their hopes for its future. They tell of floods, snows, sickness, the Great Depression, education, religion, quilting, weaving and other crafts, and the fight against a large power company that planned to flood thousands of acres of land. They also recall how the river has been central to their lives in providing food, transportation and recreation.

Book Stories I Tell Myself

Download or read book Stories I Tell Myself written by Juan F. Thompson and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunter S. Thompson, “smart hillbilly,” boy of the South, born and bred in Louisville, Kentucky, son of an insurance salesman and a stay-at-home mom, public school-educated, jailed at seventeen on a bogus petty robbery charge, member of the U.S. Air Force (Airmen Second Class), copy boy for Time, writer for The National Observer, et cetera. From the outset he was the Wild Man of American journalism with a journalistic appetite that touched on subjects that drove his sense of justice and intrigue, from biker gangs and 1960s counterculture to presidential campaigns and psychedelic drugs. He lived larger than life and pulled it up around him in a mad effort to make it as electric, anger-ridden, and drug-fueled as possible. Now Juan Thompson tells the story of his father and of their getting to know each other during their forty-one fraught years together. He writes of the many dark times, of how far they ricocheted away from each other, and of how they found their way back before it was too late. He writes of growing up in an old farmhouse in a narrow mountain valley outside of Aspen—Woody Creek, Colorado, a ranching community with Hereford cattle and clover fields . . . of the presence of guns in the house, the boxes of ammo on the kitchen shelves behind the glass doors of the country cabinets, where others might have placed china and knickknacks . . . of climbing on the back of Hunter’s Bultaco Matador trail motorcycle as a young boy, and father and son roaring up the dirt road, trailing a cloud of dust . . . of being taken to bars in town as a small boy, Hunter holding court while Juan crawled around under the bar stools, picking up change and taking his found loot to Carl’s Pharmacy to buy Archie comic books . . . of going with his parents as a baby to a Ken Kesey/Hells Angels party with dozens of people wandering around the forest in various stages of undress, stoned on pot, tripping on LSD . . . He writes of his growing fear of his father; of the arguments between his parents reaching frightening levels; and of his finally fighting back, trying to protect his mother as the state troopers are called in to separate father and son. And of the inevitable—of mother and son driving west in their Datsun to make a new home, a new life, away from Hunter; of Juan’s first taste of what “normal” could feel like . . . We see Juan going to Concord Academy, a stranger in a strange land, coming from a school that was a log cabin in the middle of hay fields, Juan without manners or socialization . . . going on to college at Tufts; spending a crucial week with his father; Hunter asking for Juan’s opinion of his writing; and he writes of their dirt biking on a hilltop overlooking Woody Creek Valley, acting as if all the horrible things that had happened between them had never taken place, and of being there, together, side by side . . . And finally, movingly, he writes of their long, slow pull toward reconciliation . . . of Juan’s marriage and the birth of his own son; of watching Hunter love his grandson and Juan’s coming to understand how Hunter loved him; of Hunter’s growing illness, and Juan’s becoming both son and father to his father . . .
