Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Far East and Oceania Agricultural Situation: Review of 1966 and Outlook for 1967 The year 1966 brought gains in total agricultural production to some countries of the Far East, losses to others. Failure often struck where success was most needed. With massive aid from abroad, india strove to fill food deficits arising from the disastrous drought of 1965 only to find that 1966 harvests were scarcely better than the year before. Having drawn down stocks reserved from the bumper crop of India will need food grain imports in 1967 about equal to the 10 million tons1 of 1966 if per capita availability is not to decline further. Agricultural production in 1966 was up significantly from the previous year in the States of Malaya, the Philippines, South Korea, and Thailand. In South Viet Nam and Cambodia production declined for the third consecutive year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation in the Far East and Oceania: Review of 1970 and Outlook for 1971 Most countries of the Far East and Oceania estimated significant gains in gnp for 1970. Farm production was up in all countries except in Japan, Korea, Cambodia, and New Zealand. Most gains can be attributed to the increased use of modern technology, particularly more fertilizer, high - yielding seeds, and irrigation. If average weather prevails, total farm production is likely to rise again in 1971 in all developing. Countries except possibly those of indo-china. Programs to restrict rice production. In Japan and wheat in Australia will keep the total outturn for the developed countries near the 1970 level. Reflecting an upgrading of the average diet, the market for imported farm products is expanding and diversifying. U.s. Exports of agricultural commodities to the region reached a record billion in 1970. U.s. Exports to Japan topped $1 billion. Nevertheless, the United States faces increased competition for Far East markets, most notably from Australia and Western Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation in the Far East and Oceania: 1969 Midyear Review Unfavorable prospects for world rice trade, added to Japan's high prices, and rice varieties not sought in the global market have practically excluded Japan from being a rice exporter. To cope with the surplus problem, Japan has acted to limit production and facilitate marketing of rice during Chief among these actions are: (1) diversion of land to other crops, (2) introduction of a limited free market system, and (3) maintenance of the 1969 price of rice at the 1968 level. By these steps, the government hopes to reduce rice production and modify its control over markets. The possible allocation of million tons of 1969-crop rice for sale as feed is being studied. If this shift materializes, it would likely reduce feedgrain import levels in late 1969 or early 1970. Following 2 years in which drought sharply reduced rice production, the 1969 harvest in Korea is expected to reach a record 6 million tons, up from million in 1968. In Taiwan a crop of million tons is forecast, roughly the same as inl968. In Hong Kong where rice acreage has declined sharply year by year, the 1969 harvest is expected to total only tons, down from tons in 1968. After many years as a major importer, the Philippines attained self sufficiency in rice in 1968. Despite a severe drought, the Republic's 1969 rice crop will substantially exceed the 1968 harvest, enabling the country to meet domestic requirements and possibly providing a small surplus for export. Efforts, though somewhat reduced, are continuing to be directed toward the increased planting of high-yielding varieties, expanded irrigation, and improved production practices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Far East and Oceania Agricultural Situation: Midyear Review; September 1967 Imports of food into countries of East and South Asia continue at high levels in 1967. Two consecutive drought years in India caused serious short ages and hardship, and grain imports of unprecedented volume moved into the country. The Philippines may import some tons of rice and at least as much wheat in 1967. South Korea is seeking tons of rice despite a record harvest last fall. South Viet Nam is now importing about tons a month. Japan-the largest commercial market in Asia-imported more than 6 million tons of grains in the first half of 1967; this was nearly one-fourth more than in the january-june period a year earlier. Imports of rice may approach tons; this will be off about tons from the previous year. The wheat crop harvested in India earlier this year is a near record, and many farmers appear ready to shift from traditional to commercial production. The monsoon broke fair and as of mid-1967 there were prospects for a near normal rice harvest in that country. Much depends now on continuation of rain through September and October. In Pakistan, too, the monsoon has favored prospects for major cr0ps. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation in the Far East and Oceania: Review of 1969 and Outlook for 1970 The Republic of Korea accounted for one-eighth of the overall gain, far beyond its usual share of output. This reflected a large increase in Korea's rice crop, in part a recovery from the effects of drought in the 2 preceding years and in part a general increase, which carried total production for the country 6 percent above the trend.
