Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lyon Memorial: New York Families, Descended From the Immigrant, Thomas Lyon, of Rye The task which the writer of these lines assumed four years ago is at last concluded. If it has been but imperfectly done, the half loaf is better than no bread. It will be long before the complete and adequate history is written. Meanwhile those who have collaborated in preparing the Lyon Memorial will find ample reward for their labor in the gratitude of their kinsmen who will owe to them some acquaint ance with a family history in which they may well take pride. Book A Most Remarkable Family

Download or read book A Most Remarkable Family written by Michael Hewitt and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a cold day on the thirtieth of January 1649 in London, an anonymous executioner severed the head of King Charles I of England. The watching crowds had very mixed feelings about this regicide, but Oliver Cromwell’s troops kept order, and eventually the crowd dispersed, stunned by this momentous event in English history, which left the country in turmoil. Amongst the crowd that day were a father of fifty-nine years and his three sons. This moment in history was to change their lives. Who were this family? Where had they come from? What would become of them? The answer to these questions would lead us back to King Robert the Bruce of Scotland, forward to our own Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and would also greatly influence much of American history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lyon Memorial: Massachusetts Families, Including Descendants of the Immigrants William Lyon, of Roxbury, Peter Lyon, of Dorchester, George Lyon, of Dorchester A family history covering eight or nine generations cannot be written in a day. The labor of collecting the data would occupy a man's entire time for a score of years, if an exhaustive work embracing six distinct families were contemplated. The editors of the -Lyon Memorial- have not attempted the impossible. It seemed to them that the time was fully come when the history of the Lyon families of America should be written, and they volunteered their services for some of the difficult pioneer work. They have aimed to lay a secure foundation on which others may build, content, themselves, to erect a serviceable temporary superstructure according to their skill and ability. Pecuniary means were not at their disposal for carrying on an extended research into the ancestry of the several immigrants bearing the name Lyon. They have not, indeed, ignored the importance of the inquiry, and they have been able even in this field to gather new information of interest and value. Their energies have been chiefly directed, however, to the unraveling of the tangled skein of the earlier family records in America, and to the gathering of definite knowledge regarding the individual members of each of the pioneer families. To this end, town, church, land and probate records have been diligently searched and many a musty volume of colonial history has been laboriously perused. The origin and explanation of family traditions have been sought, with the general conclusion, on the part of the writer of these lines, that very little weight can be attached to any tradition however persistent or widespread which is unsupported by independent historical evidence. It is necessary only for some imaginative person to make a plausible conjecture; on the morrow it will be repeated as his belief; the third day it will be quoted as matter of common hearsay. The conjecture need not be even plausible, so it is flattering to family pride. The Memorial will inevitably contain some errors of fact and mistaken dates. No history that has not been the subject of long critical study is free from such errors. The editors have consulted the most authentic sources of information, and, whenever possible, have quoted their authority. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Family of Burnett of Leys: With Collateral Branches Spalding Club was to undertake the issue of a series of histories of ancient northern families, and it was hoped the Memorials of the Family of Skene of Skene, the first volume issued by the Club, would shortly after be followed by The Family of Burnett of Leys. In the second report of the Editorial Committee, printed in the volume above referred to, the following statement appeared: Mr. George Burnett, LL.D., Lyon King of Arms, has con sented to compile for the Club a volume on the ancient baronial family of Burnett of Leys, amplified and illustrated by materials of great interest existing in this country and on the Continent. Sir Robert Burnett, in the most liberal and gratifying manner, has consented to give the Lyon unreserved access to his family papers. At the hands of the last - named gentleman as Editor, we need scarcely point out that we may look for a work peculiarly acceptable to our members.
