Book The Regency Years During Which Jane Austen Writes Napoleon Fights Byron Makes Love and Britain Becomes Modern

Download or read book The Regency Years During Which Jane Austen Writes Napoleon Fights Byron Makes Love and Britain Becomes Modern written by Robert Morrison and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Economist History Book of the Year “Elegant, entertaining and frequently surprising.” —Miranda Seymour, New York Times Book Review The Victorians are often credited with ushering in our current era, yet the seeds of change were planted during the earlier Regency period (1811–1820) when the profligate Prince of Wales—the future king George IV—succeeded his father. Around the Prince Regent surged a society of contrasts: evangelicalism and hedonism, elegance and brutality, exuberance and despair. Capturing the Napoleonic Wars, the rise of artists—the Shelleys, Austen, Keats, Byron, Turner—scientists and inventors—Stevenson, Davy, Faraday—and a cast of dissident journalists, military leaders, and fashionistas, Robert Morrison captivatingly illuminates the ways this period shaped the modern world.

  • Pages : 551 pages

Book excerpt: With its combination of satire and sentiment, its focus on the seedy side of London life, and its unexpected shifts in tone, Amelia has intrigued and disturbed readers since its first publication. Eagerly awaited by Henry Fielding’s eighteenth-century readers of Tom Jones, the novel perplexed many of them. Amelia counters the traditional courtship plot of eighteenth-century novels with its convincing portrayal of a marriage between an errant husband and his wife, and is ahead of its time in its depiction of the alienation of modern city life. Appendices include contemporary criticism and related works by Alexander Pope and Sarah Fielding.

Book Friedrich Nietzsche My Sister and I

Download or read book Friedrich Nietzsche My Sister and I written by Walter Stewart and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our previous volume, Nietzsche My Sister and I: A Critical Study, examined past criticism in order to determine the truth concerning claims that the book was a forgery. The results of the detailed study unequivocally refuted every claim made against My Sister and I as false, point-by-point. Moreover, the study clearly demonstrated that from any objective perspective and analysis the fact that Nietzsche may well have penned the book himself is more than a mere possibility. At the same time, however, we must make it crystal clear that without an original manuscript, authenticity can never be confirmed definitively. Ironically, this state of affairs leaves My Sister and I approximately in the same position as many other works that exist without original manuscripts including all of the writings of Plato and Aristotle, the Bible, the Gospels, the letters of St. Paul, The Iliad, The Odyssey, and many more works, communications, and records of all sorts that are strewn across history. What has been passed down to us as famous documents and sources in some instances actually are only copies or transcriptions that we choose to believe in. Some have been accepted without much of a pedigreed provenance only because we have decided that what they relate is important to us. My Sister and I, on the other hand, has not been accorded as fair a hearing as it should have from the day it was published, and it is time to set the record straight as to what relevance it might have to Nietzsche scholarship in general.

Book The Family Novel in Russia and England 1800 1880

Download or read book The Family Novel in Russia and England 1800 1880 written by Anna A. Berman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new understanding of the relationship between family structures and narrative structure in the nineteenth-century novel. Comparing Russia and England, it argues that the two nations had fundamentally different conceptions of the family and that these, in turn, shaped the way they constructed plots. The English placed primary value on the vertical, diachronic family axis--looking back to ancestors and head to progeny--while the Russians emphasized the lateral, synchronic axis--family expanding outward in the present from nuclear core, to extended and chosen kin. This difference shaped the way authors plotted consanguineal relations, courtship and marriage, and alternative kinship constructions. Idealizing the domestic sphere and emphasizing family continuity, the English novel made family a conservative force, while Russian novels approached it as a backward site of patriarchal tyranny in desperate need of reform. Russian family plots offered a progressive, liberalizing push toward new, nontraditional family constructions. The book's comparative approach calls for a re-evaluation of reigning theories of the novel, theories that are based on the linear English family model and cannot accommodate the more complex, Russian alternative. It reveals where these theories fall short, explains the reasons for their shortcomings, and offers a new way of conceptualizing family's role in shaping the nineteenth-century novel. Classics from Dickens, Eliot, and Trollope, to Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Turgenev are contextualized in the broader literary landscape of their day, and Russia's great women writers regain their rightful place alongside their male counterparts as the book draws together family history, literary analysis, and novel theory.
