Book The Fall of the Indigo Jackal

Download or read book The Fall of the Indigo Jackal written by McComas Taylor and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every child growing up in India knows the story of the jackal who fell into the vat of blue dye, and discovering the power of his majestic new appearance, declared himself king of the forest. In spite of his pretenses, the jackal, eventually betrayed by his own instincts, was set upon by the other animals. This and many similar narratives are found in the Pañcatantra, the collection of Sanskrit tales for children compiled by a Jaina monk named Pūrṇabhadra in 1199 CE. In this book, McComas Taylor looks at the discourses that give shape and structure to the fall of the indigo jackal and the other tales within the Pañcatantra. The work's fictional metasociety of animals, kings, and laundrymen are divided according to their jāti, or "kind." This discourse of caste holds that individuals' essential natures, statuses, and social circles are all determined by their birth. Taylor applies contemporary critical theory developed by Foucault, Bourdieu, Barthes, and others to show how these ideas are related to other Sanskritic master-texts, and describes the "regime of truth" that provides validation for the discourse of division.

Book L adab toujours recommenc

Download or read book L adab toujours recommenc written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of adab is at the very heart of the Islamicate cultures. Born in the crucible of the Arabic and Persian civilisations of the Late Antiquity period, nourished by Greek, Syriac and Indian influences, this polysemic notion could cover a variegated range of meanings, ranging from good behaviour, good manners, etiquette, proper knowledge of the rules, to belles-lettres, and finally, literature. This volume addresses the notion of adab through four perspectives, which correspond to the four parts into which it is divided: “Origins”; “Transmissions”; “Metamorphosis” of the “Origins” and finally “Origins” through the lens of modernity.

Book Frederick Taylor and the Public Administration Community

Download or read book Frederick Taylor and the Public Administration Community written by Hindy Lauer Schachter and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the "authoritarian" depiction of Frederick Taylor trivializes his important contribution. Schachter's analysis of Taylor's work shows that he actually originated many of the human relations insights that the literature attributes to Mayo, Maslow, and McGregor. Introduced are two major arguments. Through an examination of Taylor's work, a new way of understanding his actual approach to management is opened. Also discussed are the political and historical reasons that led to the distortion of his work.
