Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of the Dutch Republic: A History To the Dutch Republic, even more than to Florence at an earlier day, is the world indebted for practical instruction in that great science of political equilibrium which must always become more and more im portant as the various states of the civilised world are pressed more closely together, and as the struggle for preeminence becomes morefeverish. Courage and skill in political and military combinations enabled William the Silent to overcome the most powerful and uh scrupulous monarch of his age. The same hereditary audacity and fertility of genius placed the destiny of Europe in the hands of William's great-grandson, and enabled him to mould into an impregnable barrier the various elements of opposition to the overshadowing monarchy of Louis XIV. As the schemes of the Inquisition and the unparalleled tyranny of Philip, in one century, led to the establishment of the Re public of the United Provinces, so, in the next, the revocation of the Nantes Edict and the invasion of Holland were avenged by the elevation of the Dutch stadholder upon the throne of the stipendiary Stuarts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By Pike and Dyke: A Tale of the Rise of the Dutch Republic And to recount the progress of the war, when England, after years of hesitation, threw herself into the fray, and joined Holland in its struggle against the power that overshadowed all Europe, alike by its ambition and its bigotry. There has been no need to consult many authorities. Motley in his great work has exhausted the subject, and for all the historical facts I have relied solely upon him. Book The Rise of the Dutch Republic Vol 1 of 3

Download or read book The Rise of the Dutch Republic Vol 1 of 3 written by John Lothrop Motley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of the Dutch Republic, Vol. 1 of 3: A History The rise of the Dutch Republic must ever be regarded as one of the leading events of modern times. Without the birth of this great common wealth, the various historical phenomena of the sixteenth and following centuries must have either not existed, or have presented themselves under essential modifications. Itself an organised pro test against ecclesiastical tyranny and universal empire, the Republic guarded with sagacity, at many critical periods in the world's history, that balance Of power which, among civilised states, ought always to be identical with the scales Of divine justice. The splendid empire of Charles the Fifth was erected upon the grave of liberty. It is a consolation to watch afterwards the gradual but triumphant resurrection of its spirit. From the hand-breadth of territory called the province of Holland rises a power which wages eighty years' warfare with the most potent empire upon earth, and which, during the progress of the struggle, becoming itself a mighty state, and binding about its own slender form a zone of the richest possessions of earth, from pole to tropic, finally dictates its decrees to the empire of Charles. Book The Dutch Republic and the American Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dutch Republic and the American Revolution Classic Reprint written by Friedrich Edler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dutch Republic and the American Revolution Another European state which had been greatly offended by the treaty of Paris in 1763 was Prussia, now at the height of its prosperity and power. Frederick the Great concluded, in 1756, the Convention of Westminster With England, and the latter was his only ally during the greater part of the Seven Years' War; but when Bute replaced Pitt in the English cabinet, British policy changed. All the provisions of the Convention were broken successively by England. The subsidies to Frederick were discontinued, and a sepa rate peace was concluded with France (that of Paris in 1763) without even guaranteeing the Prussian 'dominions as had been stipulated by the Convention.2 The consequence was that Frederick conceived a strong hatred for England in general and Bute in particular, which he later transferred to Lord North. Though the Prussian king, from political reasons, abstained from taking part openly with the Ameri cans against England, he strongly sympathized with them and assisted them indirectly in many ways. In later chapters will be shown his efforts to influence the Dutch Republic against her Old ally, Great Britain. Still a third power was anxious, if not to avenge Offences committed by England, yet to recover former losses. Spain, at the end of the Spanish succession war, had ceded to Eng land the island of Minorca and her stronghold Gibraltar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege of Leyden: Condensed From Motley's "the Rise of the Dutch Republic" Forty millions of ducats had been spent. Six and a half millions of arrearages were due to the army, while its current expenses were six hundred thousand a month. The military expenses alone of the Netherlands were accordingly more than seven millions of dollars yearly, and the mines of the New World produced, during the half century of Philip's reign, an average of only eleven. Against this constantly increasing deficit, there was not a stiver in the exchequer, nor the means of raising one. Confiscation had ceased to afford a permanent revenue, and the estates obstinately refused to grant a dollar. Such was the condition to which the unrelenting tyranny and the financial experiments of Alva had reduced the country. Did ever a maiden look so tragic! He added, when I struck him in the face, because he dared to put his arm about my waist. No sooner had I given him that blow than I re pented, for who can tell the consequences of striking a Spaniard? It is true they have not the power in Leyden that they once had; yet every one seems to fear them even now. It is as though the fear had become part of our nature after so many years of oppression. But he only said again, Did ever a maiden look so tragic! And turned away, laughing insolently, halting, however, when he had gone a few yards, to bid me read the paper and tell my friends. I went up to the door and read it. Oh! 'tis terrible, Bertrand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
