Download or read book It s a Faith Walk written by Sheila Holm and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's A Faith Walk is a timely and urgent call to awaken the hearts of every Christian to grab God's hand and go forth on a Faith Walk with our Lord, and inspire and encourage fellow Faith Walkers so God's specific purpose predestined for you, to fulfill upon in your lifetime, shall be realized in your lifetime. Bishop George Dallas McKinney It's A Faith Walk is a journey God orchestrated after preparing me enough to get out of the whale Jonah found himself in so I could experience living in awe and wonder each step of the way. Since God started with a card-carrying, pew-warming, protestant denominational gal, there was a lot of preparation which needed to take place! God's training prior to being sent did not stop when God orchestrated travel since I was sent 'without an extra coin or tunic' and God arranged personal introductions before I arrived and confirmed plans after I showed up, plus, there was a lot of 'on the job training' and 'filling me as an empty vessel' with exact words precisely when they were needed. Like many who have asked me, I wanted to see the signs, wonders and miracles. I did not realize it was my limited human understanding which was blocking the experience! Before the journey, my prayer requests were merely words about what I want God to do. Sad, but I was focused upon exactly what and how I expected God to proceed, to 'get it done and also do it all for me.' I never saw my prayers from God's perspective. As soon as I did, everything I had prayed up to that point sounded lame. Not an easy realization to comprehend. God had to show me that we do not know his word or that his promises are true, so we are not able to begin to comprehend the glorious things God has 'in store for us.' We have a very limited, human view of our life. I pray that changes for God has a God sized view of our life. His plans for us are big. It is painful to hear so many people state the church, the body of Christ, is still in the pre-toddler phase and not walking yet, only hoping to hear a good word on Sunday that will carry the people through the week. I trust this is why God has shown me how much he has planned for us and why we need to operate as bible based and spirit-filled believers. The first time I heard that, I did not know the difference between the churches. Without God's guidance, we lack the ability to comprehend or act on God's plan for our life. I pray you will lean on God's word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit and not on your own understanding. A dear man of God told me he asked God to show him “Who is this woman?” God's vision of me showed how the mouse is to the elephant (body of Christ). I was so persistent, shouting for the elephant to move, but, I was ignored. Plus, during all attempts while I was biting on the back ankles, swinging on the tail and shouting, “Move,” even as I ran to the left ear, bit the ear and shouted. But, I would not stop there. I ran to the right ear, bit the ear many times and shouted until the elephant took the first step. God showed him my effort caused the body to move. Encouraged, since I have met with many leaders in the body and I've shared God's deep concerns about the body not being equipped and trained so we can grow to maturity. We are to be wise as serpents. Not to participate with them, merely to know what they are doing. Example: Check with spell check. It only recognizes demonizing or demonized not discipling or discipled. As the body of Christ, we have a lot of work to do! God has been clear, we need to be equipped and trained to faith walk as an Ambassador of our Lord Jesus Christ! May the words I share based upon all God has shown to me, bless and encourage you to go on a faith walk with God walking in power in authority utilizing your gifts, talents, skills and abilities to bless the people God directs you to. Then, share your testimony with me and all in the world who have ears to hear. Sheila Holm

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Download or read book How God Works written by David DeSteno and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a wealth of new evidence, pioneering research psychologist David DeSteno shows why religious practices and rituals are so beneficial to those who follow them—and to anyone, regardless of their faith (or lack thereof). Scientists are beginning to discover what believers have known for a long time: the rewards that a religious life can provide. For millennia, people have turned to priests, rabbis, imams, shamans, and others to help them deal with issues of grief and loss, birth and death, morality and meaning. In this absorbing work, DeSteno reveals how numerous religious practices from around the world improve emotional and physical well-being. With empathy and rigor, DeSteno chronicles religious rites and traditions from cradle to grave. He explains how the Japanese rituals surrounding childbirth help strengthen parental bonds with children. He describes how the Apache Sunrise Ceremony makes teenage girls better able to face the rigors of womanhood. He shows how Buddhist meditation reduces hostility and increases compassion. He demonstrates how the Jewish practice of sitting shiva comforts the bereaved. And much more. DeSteno details how belief itself enhances physical and mental health. But you don’t need to be religious to benefit from the trove of wisdom that religion has to offer. Many items in religion’s “toolbox” can help the body and mind whether or not one believes. How God Works offers advice on how to incorporate many of these practices to help all of us live more meaningful, successful, and satisfying lives.

Book excerpt: For many people, remaining optimistic and feeling positive about themselves and their lives is a constant battle—especially when circumstances are difficult and life is hard. For others, negativity is something that only sneaks up from time to time, yet still wreaks havoc in their hearts. Regardless of the root causes, once pessimistic thoughts permeate our minds, our feelings and emotions begin to control us instead of us controlling them. Eventually it doesn’t seem possible to stay positive, happy, and full of joy, and negative thought patterns shake our faith, causing us to sink emotionally, mentally, and spiritually over time. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Despite what storms roll in, hearts anchored in God don’t sink. When we change the way we think, we can change the way we feel and live, even if our circumstances remain the same. Intentionally embracing the opportunity to experience a transformed heart and a renewed mind opens the door for a changed life, because a positive mind will always lead to a more positive life. In Unsinkable Faith, author and Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker Tracie Miles offers hope for women who struggle with negativity. Each chapter explores Tracie’s and other women’s personal stories, showing how they rose above their circumstances by transforming and renewing their minds. Unsinkable Faith is a breath of fresh air for anyone longing for a heart full of joy, an unbreakable smile, and a new, more optimistic perspective on life. This book will equip you to: Replace pessimism with positive thinking by becoming the captain of your thoughts; Learn how true joy and happiness are based on choice, not circumstances; Overcome unhealthy habits of negative thinking by intentionally implementing three easy mind-renewing steps; Stop feeling hopeless and pitiful, and start feeling hope-filled and powerful instead; and Discover that when you change the way you think, you change the way feel, and in turn you can change your life completely.

Book Faith Speaking Understanding

Download or read book Faith Speaking Understanding written by Kevin J. Vanhoozer and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, highly esteemed scholar Kevin Vanhoozer introduces readers to a way of thinking about Christian theology that takes the work he began in the groundbreaking 2005 book, The Drama of Doctrine, to its next level. Vanhoozer argues that theology is not merely a set of cognitive beliefs, but is also something we do that involves speech and action alike. He uses a theatrical model to explain the ways in which doctrine shapes Christian understanding and forms disciples. The church, Vanhoozer posits, is the preeminent theater where the gospel is "performed," with doctrine directing this performance. Doctrines are not simply truths to be stored, shelved, and stacked, but indications and directions to be followed, practiced, and enacted. In "performing" doctrine, Christians are shaped into active disciples of Jesus Christ. He goes on to examine the state of the church in today's world and explores how disciples can do or perform doctrine. Written in an accessible and engaging style, Faith Speaking Understanding sets forth a compelling vision of what the church is and what it should be doing, and demonstrates the importance of Christian doctrine for this mission. Disciples who want to follow Christ in all situations need doctrinal direction as they walk onto the social stage in the great theater of the world. The Christian faith is about acknowledging, and participating in, the great thing God is doing in our world: making all things new in Christ through the Holy Spirit. Doctrine ministers understanding: of God, of the drama of redemption, of the church as a company of faithful players, and of individual actors, all of whom have important roles to play. In an age where things fall apart and centers fail to hold, doctrine centers us in Jesus Christ, in whom all things hold together.
