Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith and Practice of the Quakers The issue now before us is not merely one between the scientific interpretation of the universe and the Biblical interpretation of it. If it were solely that, it could in time be settled by the gradual process of thought, for the mind can in the end answer the ques tions which the mind asks. If one answer is right and the other answer is wrong, some day the right position will conquer the wrong, and truth will drive error from the field. Book Social Aspects of the Quaker Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book Social Aspects of the Quaker Faith Classic Reprint written by Edward Grubb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Aspects of the Quaker Faith It is not by accident that we, who profess to follow the Light within, have been earnest in philanthropy, and opponents of slavery and of war. To follow the Light is to be, as Fox taught, of a universal spirit we cannot rest content while those whom we profess to regard as brothers are Oppressed or degraded. Or armed for mutual destruction. But the applications of universal brotherhood are wider and closerthan some of us are aware and it is my aim in these fragmentary thoughts to help in discovering its hearings on some features of our social and industrial life. I say dirrovm'ng, because I believe that each generation must find for itself the application of the thoughts of Jesus to its new conditions. He propounded no external scheme of social salvation; and if to my socialist friends the pages that follow seem to deal too tenderly with existing institutions, I would remind them that we have the highest authority for beginning from the inside. If, as I would Iain hope, the principles herein stated are in good measure true, and if we are faithful to the truth as we know it, the further application of the principles will be progressively ascertained. Book The Beginnings of Quakerism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Beginnings of Quakerism Classic Reprint written by William C. Braithwaite and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Quakerism The standard History of the Rise, Increase, and Progress of the Christian People called Quakers, by William Sewel of Amsterdam, was published in Dutch in 1717, in English in 1722, and in German in 1742. It had been preceded by a much inferior work, Gerard Croese's Historia Quakeriana, printed in Latin in 1695, and in German and English in 1696, and was succeeded in 1789-1790 by John Gough's History, which in the earlier period is a mere compilation. Sewel's book is a conscientious and well-written piece of work for its day, but necessarily falls far short of present needs. Of shorter histories. The Rise of the Quakers, by T. Edmund Harvey (1905), The Story of Quakerism, by Elizabeth Braithwaite Emmott (1908), and the article on "Friends, Society of," by A. Neave Brayshaw, in the new edition of the Encyclop dia Britannica, may be consulted with advantage. My friend the late John VVilhelm Rowntree planned a History which should adequately exhibit Quakerism as a great experiment in spiritual religion, and should be abreast of the requirements of modern research, and he was gathering materials for the work during the last year of his life.
