Book She Never Told Me About the Ocean

Download or read book She Never Told Me About the Ocean written by Elisabeth Sharp McKetta and published by Paul Dry Books. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I’ve always admired the writing of Elisabeth Sharp McKetta, and her beautiful, ambitious first novel demonstrates why. She Never Told Me about the Ocean is a heroine’s journey through forgiveness, birth and rebirth, all the while treading the line between honoring the dead and feeling paralyzed by them. She has offered us a complicated portrait of mothers and daughters, cupped inside one another like nesting dolls."―Arthur Golden, author of Memoirs of a Geisha "She Never Told Me About the Ocean is a tidal and intimate book, brimming over with wonders and terrors and the watery echoes that bind generations of women. What a pleasure this book is from start to finish. McKetta maps the dark portals through which her women continuously reinvent themselves, newborn at every age."―Karen Russell, author of Swamplandia! and Orange World and Other Stories Told by four women whose stories nest together, She Never Told Me about the Ocean is an epic about a rite of passage that all humans undergo and none remember: birth. Eighteen-year-old Sage has been mothering her mother for as long as she can remember, and as she arrives on the shores of adulthood, she learns a secret: before she was born, she had an older brother who drowned. In her search to discover who he was and why nobody told her, Sage moves to tiny Dragon Island where her mother grew up. There, she embarks on a quest to learn the superstitions of the island, especially its myths involving her mother. Gathering stories from Ilya, a legendary midwife who hires Sage as her apprentice; Marella, Sage’s grieving mother who was named for the ocean yet has always been afraid of it; and Charon, the Underworld ferrywoman who delivers souls to the land of the dead, Sage learns to stop rescuing her mother and simply let go. But when her skill as Ilya’s apprentice enables her to rescue her mother one final time, in a way that means life or death, Sage must shed her inherited fears and become her own woman.

Book Awake with Asashoryu and Other Essays

Download or read book Awake with Asashoryu and Other Essays written by Elisabeth Sharp McKetta and published by Paul Dry Books. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Humane, amusing, touching, and very satisfying."―Phillip Lopate, author of To Show and to Tell: The Craft of Literary Nonfiction “Captivating and evocative and original.”―Grace Dane Mazur, author of The Garden Party “In the wise and funny essays that make up Awake with Asashoryu, Elisabeth Sharp McKetta asks vital questions about what it means to forge an adult life of one’s own.”―Lynn C. Miller, author of The Unmasking and The Day After Death At the heart of every essay in Elisabeth Sharp McKetta’s lively collection is the same question: How does one grow up without losing oneself? McKetta braids deceptively simple stories of her own life with the rich undercurrent of familiar childhood tales to reveal things both personal and universal and as close to the truth as possible. Whether she is spending sleepless nights watching the sumo wrestler Asashoryu with her father, settling into a new life in a fishing hamlet in Cornwall, struggling with a beloved and ultimately untrainable corgi named Goblin, or emerging from a night in the woods rethinking who she might be, McKetta’s essays sparkle and twist round and about—funny and insightful and compelling.

Book excerpt: Turns a critical eye on Aesop's Fables to ask whether there is any scientific truth to Aesop's portrayal of his animals. Despite originating more than two-and-a-half thousand years ago, Aesop's Fables are still passed on from parent to child, and are embedded in our collective consciousness. The morals we have learned from these tales continue to inform our judgements, but have the stories also informed how we regard their animal protagonists? If so, is there any truth behind the stereotypes? Are wolves deceptive villains? Are crows insightful geniuses? And could a tortoise really beat a hare in a race? In Aesop's Animals, zoologist Jo Wimpenny turns a critical eye to the fables to discover whether there is any scientific truth to Aesop's portrayal of the animal kingdom. She brings the tales into the twenty-first century, introducing the latest findings on some of the most fascinating branches of ethological research – the study of why animals do the things they do. In each chapter she interrogates a classic fable and a different topic – future planning, tool use, self-recognition, cooperation and deception – concluding with a verdict on the veracity of each fable's portrayal from a scientific perspective. By sifting fact from fiction in one of the most beloved texts of our culture, Aesop's Animals explores and challenges our preconceived notions about animals, the way they behave, and the roles we both play in our shared world.

Book The Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde

Download or read book The Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde written by Dr Jarlath Killeen and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscar Wilde's two collections of children's literature, The Happy Prince and Other Stories (1888) and A House of Pomegranates (1891), have often been marginalised in critical accounts as their apparently conservative didacticism appears at odds with the characterisation of Wilde as an amoral aesthete. In this, the first full-length study of Wilde's fairy tales for children, Jarlath Killeen argues that Wilde's stories are neither uniformly conservative nor subversive, but a blend of both. Killeen contends that while they should be read in relation to a literary tradition of fairy tales that emerged in nineteenth century Europe; Irish issues heavily influenced the work. These issues were powerfully shaped by the 'folk Catholicism' Wilde encountered in the west of Ireland. By resituating the fairy tales in a complex nexus of theological, political, social, and national concerns, Killeen restores the tales to their proper place in the Wilde canon.

There is a cast of predictable characters, the hero or heroine is submitted to terrible trials, cruelty, and injustice but in the end the baddies get their comeuppance, good triumphs, and everyone lives happily ever after. In this book Manfred Kets de Vries, one of the world's leading authorities on the psychology of leadership, and a pioneering practitioner in the field of psychodynamic executive coaching, draws on the format of traditional fairy tales and tells us five stories that dramatize five key themes of dysfunctional leadership. The accompanying commentaries analyze each tale and examine the ways in which it applies to leadership behavior and organizational practices. This diagnostic element is supported by self-assessment tests that reinforce the main lessons of each tale and guide the reader's interpretation of the results. With Kets de Vries's guidance you'll be able to help your clients create best places to work, where everyone is the best they can be, and lives 'happily ever after'.

Book Jungle Animals Folk Tales

Download or read book Jungle Animals Folk Tales written by Dr. Zuvarashe Judith Mushipe and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jungle Animals Folk Tales: Children Folk Tales Based on Animals of the Jungle By: Dr. Zuvarashe Judith Mushipe Growing up in Zimbabwe in the 60s, there were no TVs, especially in the countryside. For entertainment the children listened to grown-ups telling them stories. Most of the stories had animal characters, but they conveyed lessons to the children. In this book, Dr. Zuvarashe Judith Mushipe narrates folk tales based on animals of the jungle. These are stories she grew up hearing as elders in her community narrated them to the children. Each story written in this book conveys a strong message to the children. The lessons from the stories can benefit both children and adults alike. In sharing these tales, Dr. Mushipe hopes to preserve the stories that have been passed from generation to generation in the Shona culture in Zimbabwe.
