Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " Whether called "the good people," "the little people," or simply "them," fairies are familiar from their appearances in Shakespeare's plays, Disney's films, and points in between. In many cultures, however, fairies are not just the stuff of distant legend or literature: they are real creatures with supernatural powers. The Good People presents nineteen essays that focus on the actual fairies of folklore -- fairies of past and living traditions who affected, and still affect, people's lives in myriad ways.

Book The Blessed and the Damned

Download or read book The Blessed and the Damned written by Anne O'Connor and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish folklore of the Otherworld is rich in its many manifestations of supernatural beings and personages. This is represented in many different genres of folklore, such as folktales, legends, ballads, memorates, beliefs and belief statements, and exists within the context of rich literary, historical and imaginative parallels. This book presents a new reading of Irish religious belief and legend in a meaningful socio-historical context, examining popular belief and narratives of sinful women and unbaptised children, as a way of understanding a particular worldview in Irish society. Blending postmodern approaches with traditional methodologies, the author reviews the representation of women, sin and repentance in Irish folklore. The author suggests new ways of seeing this legend material, indicating strong links between the Irish and the French, specifically Breton, religious tradition, and tracing the nature of this inter-relationship through the post-Tridentine Counter Reformation Roman Catholic Church and its teachings. In this way aspects of Ireland's popular religious and cultural inheritance are examined.

Book The Devil from over the Sea

Download or read book The Devil from over the Sea written by Sarah Covington and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ireland, few figures have generated more hatred than Oliver Cromwell, whose seventeenth-century conquest, massacres, and dispossessions would endure in the social memory for ages to come. The Devil from over the Sea explores the many ways in which Cromwell was remembered and sometimes conveniently 'forgotten' in historical, religious, political, and literary texts, according to the interests of different communities across time. Cromwell's powerful afterlife in Ireland, however, cannot be understood without also investigating his presence in folklore and the landscape, in ruins and curses. Nor can he be separated from the idea of the 'Cromwellian': a term which came to elicit an entire chain of contemptuous associations that would begin after his invasion and assume a wholly new force in the nineteenth century. What emerges from all these memorializing traces is a multitudinous Cromwell who could be represented as brutal, comic, sympathetic, or satanic. He could be discarded also, tellingly, from the accounts of the past, and especially by those which viewed him as an embarrassment or worse. In addition to exploring the many reasons why Cromwell was so vehemently remembered or forgotten in Ireland, Sarah Covington finally uncovers the larger truths conveyed by sometimes fanciful or invented accounts. Contrary to being damaging examples of myth-making, the memorializations contained in martyrologies, folk tales, or newspaper polemics were often productive in cohering communities, or in displaying agency in the form of 'counter-memories' that claimed Cromwell for their own and reshaped Irish history in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of years in the future, Earth is entirely covered by enormous skyscrapers that are tens of miles tall and extend miles beneath the surface. There’s not a bare spot of ground that isn’t covered with blacktop or occupied by one of these “megascrapers.” Hundreds of billions of people spend their lives entirely within these monsters of technology, living, working, shopping, relaxing… Rare is the individual who ventures onto the roofs, or even crosses over to the next building. The concept of “outside,” of green hills and vast natural countryside, has been all but forgotten, because it’s all been paved over or built upon. These millions of megascrapers comprise one vast, endless city. The Big City. Jed Morble, a Big City man, is weary of the endless rush of civilization. Weaned on fabulous tales of the Great Outdoors told to him by his long-dead grandmother, he longs for the outside, but knows he’ll never find it. So he trudges despondently through his pointless existence, until one day, he happens upon a document that points the way to a door that leads to another world—of green hills and vast natural countrysides. The only problem is, the door is deep in the heart of a bombed-out section of the city that now serves as a prison for the dregs of society. Jed decides to make the attempt. His journey will lead him through criminal territory and into a vast, unspoiled new world, where he’ll clash with aliens who once decimated the Earth, and will ultimately learn a shocking secret about the new world he plans to call home.
