Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 2008 Newbery Medalist Laura Amy Schlitz comes an exhilarating new adventure -- and a thoroughly original fairy who is a true force of nature. (Ages 7-11) What would happen to a fairy if she lost her wings and could no longer fly? Flory, a young night fairy no taller than an acorn and still becoming accustomed to her wings -- wings as beautiful as those of a luna moth -- is about to find out. What she discovers is that the world is very big and very dangerous. But Flory is fierce and willing to do whatever it takes to survive. If that means telling others what to do -- like Skuggle, a squirrel ruled by his stomach -- so be it. Not every creature, however, is as willing to bend to Flory’s demands. Newbery Medal winner Laura Amy Schlitz and world-renowned illustrator and miniaturist Angela Barrett venture into the realm of the illustrated classic -- a classic entirely and exquisitely of their making, and a magnificent adventure.

Book The Fairy Book

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dinah Maria Mulock Craik
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-01-30
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book The Fairy Book written by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is meant to be the best collection attainable of that delight of all children, and of many grown people who retain the child-heart still-the old-fashioned, time-honoured classic Fairy-tale. It has been compiled from all sources-far-off and familiar; when familiar, the stories have been traced with care to their original form, which, if foreign, has been re-translated, condensed, and in any other needful way made suitable for modern British children. Perrault, Madame d'Aulnois, and Grimm have thus been laid under contribution. Where it was not possible to get at the original of a tale, its various versions have been collated, compared, and combined; and in some instances, where this still proved unsatisfactory, the whole story has been written afresh. The few real old English fairy tales, such as Jack the Giant-Killer, Tom Thumb, etc., whose authorship is lost in obscurity, but whose charming Saxon simplicity of style, and intense realism of narration, make for them an ever-green immortality-these have been left intact; for no later touch would improve them. All modern stories have been excluded. Of course, in fairy tales instruction is not expected-we find there only the rude moral of virtue rewarded and vice punished. But children will soon discover for themselves that in real life all beautiful people are not good, nor all ugly ones wicked; that every elder sister is not ungenerous, nor every stepmother cruel. The tender young heart is often reached as soon by the imagination as by the intellect: and without attempting any direct appeal to either reason or conscience, the Editor of this Collection has been especially careful that it should contain nothing which could really harm a child. She therefore trusts that, whatever its defects, this Fairy Book will not deserve a criticism, almost the sharpest that can be given to any work-"that it would have been better if the author had taken more pains.

Book The Fairy Book The Best Popular Fairy Stories Selected and Rendered Anew Illustrated by Warwick Goble

This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fairy Book – The Best Popular Fairy Stories was originally published in 1913. It is a collection of classic children’s tales, compiled and edited by Dinah Craik, and illustrated by Warwick Goble. In the words of the author, it is intended as ‘the best collection attainable of that delight of all children, and of many grown people who retain the child-heart still – the old-fashioned, time-honoured classic Fairy Tale. It includes the narratives of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Tom Thumb’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, ‘Snow White’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and many more. Warwick Goble (1862 – 1943) was an illustrator of children’s books, who specialised in Japanese and Indian themes. The son of a commercial traveller, he was educated at the Westminster School of art, and specialised in chromolithographic printing. His work is delicate in its colouring, and masterful in its presentation of line and form. Some of Goble’s best known works include illustrations for Charles Kingsley’s The Water Babies, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.
