This study uses a qualitative methodology to investigate the perceptions of students' with specific learning disabilities (SLD), particularly the students' perceptions of student motivation, success, and psychosocial factors such as self-efficacy, self-advocacy, and the stigmas related to having an SLD in an effort to identify the factors that impact success in college students who have specific learning disabilities. The researcher will interview students with a SLD regarding the length of time their disability has been identified, the accommodations previously accessed in the secondary educational setting compared to current college accommodations, student motivation, success, current student support systems skills, other psychosocial factors, and any barriers that students may perceive they face."--Leaf 3.

The inspiration for the book was a conference held at Barat College in Lake Forest Illinois on April 7, 1990, entitled College Students with Learning Disabilities: Reviewing the '80s and Planning for the '90s. The occasion was the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Barat College's program for college students with learning disabilities. Papers presented at this con ference, plus several additional invited chapters, and those of the co editors are included in this much needed publication. Only a few years ago, college was out of the question for most adults with learning disabilities. It is heartening to note that this situation has changed substantially over the last 15 or so years, with great strides in opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to acquire a college level education. From a slow beginning with programs such as the one at Barat College, there are today programs and support services in a variety of settings at a growing number of colleges and universities. Many indi viduals with learning disabilities can look forward to experiencing college and better preparing themselves for the future. The collection of papers in this book offers a comprehensive review of this exciting and challenging field.

Book excerpt: This study described the perceptions of learning disabled (LD) students with regard to the factors that lead to their current success in college. The 5 participants ages 19 to 34, are enrolled as full-time students at a public university in Pennsylvania. The study analyzed the responses of the students to an open-ended survey and a semi-structured interview. Additionally, a parent (or spouse) of each participant completed a survey and was interviewed. The student's confidential file was examined for documentation regarding their learning disability and support services. The study was guided by 4 research questions that examined the critical home experiences, school experiences, student's self-knowledge and current actions, and views regarding critical school initiatives. The results indicated that the 5 participants recognized the importance of learning to self-advocate by explaining their disability and requesting support from their professors. The students also acknowledged the value of the supports available through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities. The Director and staff of the university provided direct training in self-knowledge and self-awareness along with making available tutors, alternate testing sites, and academic coaches. Also deemed effective were the high school supports such as challenging curriculum, classmates who were academically-oriented, participation in the development of the I.E.P. and attendance in the meetings, and supportive teachers who provided encouragement and risk-taking opportunities. Valuable home experiences included: communication and positive encouragement from family, opportunities for participation in extra-curricular activities, and community service activities. The results also suggested a number of initiatives for schools to implement in order to improve student transitions to postsecondary education.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand factors influencing the successful participation of adults with learning disabilities in higher education. Data were collected through a series of three semi-structured interviews from a sample of ten students presenting verified learning disabilities and attending a minority-serving institution. The key emerging themes and patterns were identified from all thirty transcript analyses. The findings, placed in the context of previous research into college success for students with learning disabilities, enabled recognition of a success model with five overarching themes: A.A higher education institution committed to access and retention for disadvantaged students, reflected in a mission statement that included outreach to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, B. The availability of student support services on campus, C.A social safety net to compensate for low income (specifically, the state vocational rehabilitation agency), D. The support and advocacy of family and teachers, and E.A core of character strengths (specifically, persistence, optimism, and gratitude). Implications and recommendations for future research were discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this pilot project was to determine the factors or supports that college graduates perceived as helping them to thrive and attempt higher education, despite having a learning disability, specifically dyslexia. Based on the literature review, this pilot study examined the four main kinds of support that most students receive while growing up; including family support, peer support, teacher support, and support from other programs and resources. The specific research question explored: What encouraged or discouraged these now adults in their pivotal growing years in regards to dyslexia? This pilot study used a mixed-methods research design which included an anonymous online survey and interview. With only one interview completed a single-case study was derived. The results of this pilot study are shared, including implications for educators and suggestions for future research. What was found is that all four highlighted sources of support played a role in the lives of the participants. The common thread that wove them altogether was socioemotional support provided by those sources.
