Download or read book Jonathan Lyndon Chase written by Karen Patterson and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Lyndon Chase is a Philadelphia-based visual artist whose works--drawings, paintings, sculpture, video and sound--focus primarily on Black, queer domestic intimacy. The artist was invited to work with the FWM Studio in the museum's renowned screenprinting facilities to conceptualize and produce an original design. Chase employed this newly-created yardage as canvases on which to make a new suite of paintings, as well as soft sculpture and clothing. Big Wash is the artist's first solo museum exhibition and will feature new work created during their 2019-2020 screenprinting residency at FWM. For Big Wash, Chase turns their attention to the laundromat as a site that is at once private and public. With newly created paintings, drawings, and video, they continue their signature ability to move seamlessly between history and fantasy, as well as interior and exterior, with vivid depictions of eroticism, domesticity, queerness, nostalgia, and tenderness. Chase's vibrant textile design punctuates the exhibition and acts as a stand-in for Black queer bodies navigating both the rawness of the urban landscape and intimacy of domestic settings.
Download or read book Ann Hamilton written by Patricia C. Phillips and published by Prestel. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cloth making -- among the oldest forms of human cultural production -- provides inspiration for Ann Hamilton's multi-venue project, 'habitus', located at three sites: The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Municipal Pier 9, and on social media. 'habitus' weaves text, textile, and image together as mediums for an imaginative and tactile exchange between artist and audience. The museum's galleries display Hamilton's selection of historical objects -- including literacy commonlace books, textile sample books, dolls, and needwork portfolios -- borrowed from Philadelphia museums and public collections. Printed passages from published writings referencing the social and material life of textiles, and collected through an open call to the public at http://cloth-a-commonplace.tumblr.com, will be available free to museum visitors. In the vast space of Municipal Pier 9 on the Delaware River, visitors propel a field of gigantic cylindrical curtains to billow to atmospheric proportion. As cloth swaddles us at birth and covers us in sleep; as a folded blanket can tell a story of trade; as a flag carries the symbol of a nation, Hamilton's multi-venue exhibition 'habitus' invites us to touch and be touched by the fabric of human experience"--Publisher's statement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspirational and practical book on how to interpret and collaborate on different themes in textile art. With foreword by Marie-Therese Wisniowski, who runs Art Quill Studio. This stunning collection showcases the work produced by renowned textile artists Els van Baarle and Cherilyn Martin, and explores how – even when working from the same starting point – textile art can produce a myriad interpretations of shape, form, colour and technique. Els and Cherilyn have chosen six themes for their own starting point, each full of inspiration and artistic potential: Memory (both personal experiences and historical events); Graven (cemetery) images and idols; Books as objects; Pompeii and archaeological excavations; Walls; and Everyday items. For each of the themes the authors have provided a personal interpretation of the work and a description of the techniques they used, along with step-by-step instructions. In the chapter on memory, for example, Cherilyn demonstrates how old fabrics and textiles (which themselves have a unique history all of their own) can be recycled to incorporate your own stitched drawings. Alternatively, Els explores Procion Dye techniques to create colourful and striking fabrics that bear no resemblance to Els work on the same theme. The trend for collaborative textile art is increasing in popularity. This fascinating guide provides a rich seam of inspiration from two renowned artists, exploring how to get the most from your collaborations and produce beautiful and unique work.
