Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Western economists and journalists, the most distinctive facet of the post-war Japanese business world has been the keiretsu, or the insular business alliances among powerful corporations. Within keiretsu groups, argue these observers, firms preferentially trade, lend money, take and receive technical and financial assistance, and cement their ties through cross-shareholding agreements. In The Fable of the Keiretsu, Yoshiro Miwa and J. Mark Ramseyer demonstrate that all this talk is really just urban legend. In their insightful analysis, the authors show that the very idea of the keiretsu was created and propagated by Marxist scholars in post-war Japan. Western scholars merely repatriated the legend to show the culturally contingent nature of modern economic analysis. Laying waste to the notion of keiretsu, the authors debunk several related “facts” as well: that Japanese firms maintain special arrangements with a “main bank,” that firms are systematically poorly managed, and that the Japanese government guided post-war growth. In demolishing these long-held assumptions, they offer one of the few reliable chronicles of the realities of Japanese business.

Book A Skeptic s Guide to Miwa and Ramseyer s The Fable of the Keiretsu

Download or read book A Skeptic s Guide to Miwa and Ramseyer s The Fable of the Keiretsu written by Dan W. Puchniak and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article describes how in the “Fable of the Keiretsu”, Miwa and Ramseyer (M&R) skilfully demonstrate that Ivy League academics, Nobel Prize Laureates, a Pulitzer Prize winner and almost every Japanologist has inaccurately described Japan's postwar economy. M&R achieve this by applying fresh empirical research in a precise and logical manner which demonstrates that many of the hallmarks of Japan's postwar economy - keiretsu, main banks and government led growth - are exaggerated. Unfortunately, however, demonstrating that the conventional wisdom about the Japanese economy is exaggerated was not enough to satisfy M&R's ambitious research agenda. M&R's attempt to extend their conclusions beyond 'disproving exaggerations' and towards proving 'academic fables' is what transforms their otherwise groundbreaking book into an illogical diatribe that fails to achieve its goal. This article explains the logical gaps in M&R's book, which result from its overly ambitious (and still unproven) conclusion that all of the hallmarks of Japan's postwar economy are 'academic fables'. It identifies the flaws in M&R's Marxist conspiracy theory, the unanswered questions created by the bold assertion that the government plays absolutely no role in Japan's economy and a number of pieces of critical evidence that are missing from the book. Then, the article cautions readers of one of M& R's 'un-kept promises' and uses a short case study to demonstrate the weakness of M&R's central theory that perfect free-markets exist in Japan. The article concludes by agreeing with M&R that people interested in the Japanese economy should 'buy, borrow or steal' the book - but only if they also 'buy, borrow or steal' a pillar (not a grain) of salt to accompany the read.

Book Japanese Law

  • Author : J. Mark Ramseyer
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1999-02-02
  • ISBN : 9780226703848
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Japanese Law written by J. Mark Ramseyer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-02-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this clear and very readable introduction to Japanese law, J. Mark Ramseyer and Minoru Nakazato employ an economic approach to challenge commonly held ideas about the Japanese legal system. While many studies assume that Japanese law differs fundamentally from the law in the United States, this work shows the essential similarity between the two. Arguing against the idea that law plays only a trivial role in Japan or is culturally determined, the authors demonstrate that standard economic models go far to explain why Japanese law has the shape it does.

Book Global Oligopoly

Book excerpt: The era of globalisation brought waves of consolidation in business ownership alongside Leviathon-like state actors. Digital disruption too can leave market power in a relatively small number of hands. In organisational and economic terms, global oligopoly is now a fundamental idea for business and society, which this book explores and analyses. This book focuses on global oligopolies, starting with an analysis of global concentration and profits in all sectors, before moving on to illuminate the geographical spread and global strategic orientation choices and performance outcomes of global oligopoly. Contemporary cooperation modes, such as cross-border M&As and strategic alliances, niche and Emerging Market champion strategies are also analysed in detail to move the reader towards understanding likely future directions for the field. Presenting empirical data on strategies and performance outcomes, the book covers a range of industries to provide practical, research-based guidance for more effective global business strategies and policy perspectives.

Book Law Capitalism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Curtis J. Milhaupt
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2008-09-15
  • ISBN : 0226525295
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Law Capitalism written by Curtis J. Milhaupt and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent high-profile corporate scandals—such as those involving Enron in the United States, Yukos in Russia, and Livedoor in Japan—demonstrate challenges to legal regulation of business practices in capitalist economies. Setting forth a new analytic framework for understanding these problems, Law and Capitalism examines such contemporary corporate governance crises in six countries, to shed light on the interaction of legal systems and economic change. This provocative book debunks the simplistic view of law’s instrumental function for financial market development and economic growth. Using comparative case studies that address the United States, China, Germany, Japan, Korea, and Russia, Curtis J. Milhaupt and Katharina Pistor argue that a disparate blend of legal and nonlegal mechanisms have supported economic growth around the world. Their groundbreaking findings show that law and markets evolve together in a “rolling relationship,” and legal systems, including those of the most successful economies, therefore differ significantly in their organizational characteristics. Innovative and insightful, Law and Capitalism will change the way lawyers, economists, policy makers, and business leaders think about legal regulation in an increasingly global market for capital and corporate governance.

Book Convergence and Persistence in Corporate Governance

Download or read book Convergence and Persistence in Corporate Governance written by Jeffrey N. Gordon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-08 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate governance is on the reform agenda all over the world. How will global economic integration affect the different systems of corporate ownership and governance? Is the Anglo-American model of shareholder capitalism destined to become the template for a converging global corporate governance standard or will the differences persist? This reader contains classic work from leading scholars addressing this question as well as several new essays. In a sophisticated political economy analysis that is also attuned to the legal framework, the authors bring to bear efficiency arguments, politics, institutional economics, international relations, industrial organization, and property rights. These questions have become even more important in light of the post-Enron corporate governance crisis in the United States and the European Union's repeated efforts at corporate integration. This will become a key text for postgraduates and academics.

Book Japan s Economic Planning and Mobilization in Wartime 1930s 1940s

Download or read book Japan s Economic Planning and Mobilization in Wartime 1930s 1940s written by Yoshiro Miwa and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-22 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although most economists maintain a mistrust of a government's goals when it intervenes in an economy, many continue to trust its actual ability. They retain, in other words, a faith in state competence. For this faith, they adduce no evidence. Sharing little skepticism about the government's ability, they continue to expect the best of governmental intervention. To study government competence in World War II Japan offers an intriguing laboratory. In this book, Yoshiro Miwa shows that the Japanese government did not conduct requisite planning for the war by any means. It made its choices on an ad hoc basis and the war itself quickly became a dead end. That the government planned for the war incompetently casts doubts on the accounts of Japanese government leadership more generally.
