Book excerpt: Steve Block, a retired New York City police detective was surprised when he was summoned to meet with the head of the Family. Years earlier, to avoid conflicts that were certain to arise, he had established a set of operating ground rules with his best friend, Joe Monetti, a ranking member of the Mafia. Those rules defined their relationship in the event of confrontations between the Family and the police. He was caught off guard, therefore, to find that the purpose of his meeting was to help the Mafia find the killer of one of their members, Sal Vitorio. The New York City Police Department had made a cursory investigation of the murder and had met with no success in finding the killer. Although the murdered man was ostensibly a legitimate businessman, the police knew that the victim was a front for the Mafia, with prior involvement in both drugs and prostitution. They did not intend to undertake a costly investigation to find the killer of a Mafia member. City budgets would not allow it. The Extortionist is the story of how Steve Block learns how to deal with the Family in tracking down the extortionist and killer. And it describes how Steve Block, when he finally identifies Stoddard Blakeslee as the extortionist and murderer, discovers he has the wrong person.

She’s on the trail of an extortionist whose known victims are young refugee women students at her school. If the extortionist’s victims refuse his demands for money he hurts them, or he shows them the doll. No one who has seen it is unaffected, and no one will explain its power. Jess and a group of female students are chosen to find out if there are other victims, too traumatized to complain. But the group is almost paralyzed by problems of its own: hot disagreements, personality clashes, jealousies, and worst of all, the possibility of an infiltrator. Someone (wittingly or unwittingly) is warning the extortionist. He evades every potential trap. Jess’s "sort-of" boyfriend is also giving her trouble. Excluded from the hunt for the extortionist, Jon feels discriminated against. Jess tries to placate him, but in doing so wonders if she’s telling him too much. She wonders if he’s passing the information on to his friends, including the very attractive and likeable Anthony, who almost fits the description of the extortionist. Or does he?

Download or read book The Traditional Jewish Law of Sale written by and published by Hebrew Union College Press. This book was released on 1983-12-31 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rabbinic tradition is in large part a tradition of law and jurisprudence. This tradition of law comprehends fields as diverse as the law of evidence and the dietary regimen, as laws on credit and debt and the laws of ritual purity. It follows naturally that many, if not most, of the great works of rabbinical literature are law books, commentaries on the law, and collections of cases. The principal legal code, or restatement, still authoritative among traditional Jews, is the Shulhan Arukh, compiled by Joseph b. Ephraim Karo of Safed (1488-1575) and glossed by Moses Isserles of Cracow (1520-1572). This work, published in four volumes, provided the rabbinic jurist or magistrate, as well as the learned layman, with a concise review of the various areas of Jewish law that might come to his attention. One such area of traditional Jewish law was the laws of buying and selling and the laws of fraud in sales. This particular domain within traditional Jewish commercial law is surprisingly intelligible and fascinating for modern students of Jewish tradition. Buying and selling are just as much a part of the modern world as they were of past ages. Moreover, the student of legal history or comparative law will find that this rabbinical code on sales and fraud in sales provides, at a glance, a view of the strata of Jewish legal development from the ancient period to the sixteenth century. Among the matters treated in this code are the formation of the agreement to buy and sell, the concept of acquisition as it relates to various types of property, legal capacity, and the requirement of good faith. The chapters on fraud reflect the moral and ethical values of Jewish tradition which are always implicit, and often explicit, in the rules of Jewish civil, criminal, and commercial legal codes. The material is clearly of interest to modern students of business ethics. A synopsis of the law of sale prefaces the work. It underscores some of the main features of this area of the law and furnishes some terminology and analysis of the material. While this synopsis does note some points of contrast and comparison with Roman law and medieval church law, it is not intended as a detailed historical or comparative study. It serves principally to introduce the text itself and establish some useful lines of understanding and classification. The translation of the laws of sale and fraud presented here has been prepared with the utmost care and attention to the technical nuances of legal terminology in both modern and ancient law. Its apparatus of notes and references includes material on the history of the printing of this translated portion of the Jewish legal tradition.

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Austrian Economics written by Peter J. Boettke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Austrian School of Economics is an intellectual tradition in economics and political economy dating back to Carl Menger in the late-19th century. Menger stressed the subjective nature of value in the individual decision calculus. Individual choices are indeed made on the margin, but the evaluations of rank ordering of ends sought in the act of choice are subjective to individual chooser. For Menger, the economic calculus was about scarce means being deployed to pursue an individual's highest valued ends. The act of choice is guided by subjective assessments of the individual, and is open ended as the individual is constantly discovering what ends to pursue, and learning the most effective way to use the means available to satisfy those ends. This school of economic thinking spread outside of Austria to the rest of Europe and the United States in the early-20th century and continued to develop and gain followers, establishing itself as a major stream of heterodox economics. The Oxford Handbook of Austrian Economics provides an overview of this school and its theories. The various contributions discussed in this book all reflect a tension between the Austrian School's orthodox argumentative structure (rational choice and invisible hand) and its addressing of a heterodox problem situations (uncertainty, differential knowledge, ceaseless change). The Austrian economists from the founders to today seek to derive the invisible hand theorem from the rational choice postulate via institutional analysis in a persistent and consistent manner. Scholars and students working in the field of History of Economic Thought, those following heterodox approaches, and those both familiar with the Austrian School or looking to learn more will find much to learn in this comprehensive volume.

Download or read book Electronic Theft written by Peter Grabosky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-02 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book was first published in 2001, the convergence of communications and computing had begun to transform Western industrial societies. Increasing connectivity was accompanied by unprecedented opportunities for crimes of acquisition. The fundamental principle of criminology is that crime follows opportunity, and opportunities for theft abound in the digital age. Electronic Theft named, described and analysed the range of electronic and digital theft, and constituted the first major survey of the field. The authors covered a broad list of electronic misdemeanours, including extortion, defrauding governments, telephone fraud, securities fraud, deceptive advertising and other business practices, industrial espionage, intellectual property crimes, and the misappropriation and unauthorised use of personal information. They were able to capture impressively large amounts of data internationally from both scholarly and professional sources. The book posed and attempted to answer some of the pressing questions to do with national sovereignty and enforceability of laws in 2001.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html A collection of certain moralizations from Holy Scripture and its interpreter, St. John Chrysostom, the great teacher of the universe, with the application of reasoning, composed for the benefit of the spiritual. 1. In this book, firstly, the Holy Scriptures are proposed, then the teachings of St. John Chrysostom. And finally, reasoning is applied to the common people. 2. Reasoning is not relied on under any article because there is similar material under other articles, and therefore the reader is referred to discussions on other topics. 3. Vices for all are not vile for everyone, such as: murder, robbery, robbery, violence, adultery, fornication and others like them because everyone recognizes them for great vices; but they only consider some vices that people, especially of this century, do not recognize for small or almost completely vices, but which no less than the aforementioned ones prevent salvation, and there are other serious troubles due to wine, such as anger, envy, extortion, love of money, slander, as you can see below. 4. It is believed here what Christian duty consists of, common and mutual, which requires faith, hope and love from us; also rely the fruits of love, that is: mercy, reconciliation with one's neighbor, forgiveness of sins for one's neighbor, contempt of the world, patience and so on. 5. In some places, only the essence of the teaching of St. Chrysostom, and not the exact words of the holy teacher rely. 6. Reasoning is simple and concise: simple - for better understanding by the common people; briefly so that it is not boring for the reader to read more often. 7. If anyone finds something rude in any reasoning, he readily declares that benefit is sought here, not pleasure; salvation, not human pleasures. 8. If someone with an enlightened mind, beyond expectations, finds something worthy of correction, then this mistake is my poor mind, and I ask you to ascribe to my will. Content Foreword I.
