Download or read book The Private Life of Spies and The Exquisite Art of Getting Even written by Alexander McCall Smith and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beloved author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series comes a new collection of lighthearted stories of espionage and revenge that are as surprising as they are entertaining. Alexander McCall Smith brings his trademark wit and warmth to nine twisty tales of spycraft and vengeance. In "Nuns and Spies," a spy dropped deep into enemy territory manages to disguise himself—quite convincingly—as a nun. In "Filioque," an invitation to join the Vatican secret service sends a prospective operative down a rabbit hole of controversy and confusion. In "Dignity & Decency," an author on the brink of public ruin sees the error of his ways after an act of kindness saves the day. A keen observer of humanity and imbued with a sparkling imagination, Alexander McCall Smith illustrates in these stories that honesty and forthrightness are paramount and that forgiveness is restorative. With surprising insight and a healthy helping of humor, this collection reminds us that, in the end, the high road is often the better one for all involved.

Download or read book The Plague of Fantasies written by Slavoj Žižek and published by Verso. This book was released on 1997 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavoj Zizek is, without doubt, one of the most stimulating and vibrant thinkers of our time, and his idiosyncratic blend of Lacan and Hegel is always sparkling with insight and studded with amusing stories, anecdotes and jokes. In The Plague of Fantasies Zizek approaches another enormous subject with characteristic brio and provocativeness. The current epoch is plagued by fantasms: there is an ever intensifying antagonism between the process of ever greater abstraction of our lives—whether in the form of digitalization or market relations—and the deluge of pseudo-concrete images which surround us. Traditional critical thought would have sought to trace the roots of abstract notions in concrete social reality; but today, the correct procedure is the inverse—from pseudo-concrete imagery to the abstract process which structures our lives. Ranging in his examples from national differences in toilet design to cybersex, and from intellectuals' responses to the Bosnian war to Robert Schumann's music, Zizek explores the relations between fantasy and ideology, the way in which fantasy animates enjoy-ment while protecting against its excesses, the associations of the notion of fetishism with fantasized seduction, and the ways in which digitalization and cyberspace affect the status of subjectivity. To the already initiated, The Plague of Fantasies will be a welcome reminder of why they enjoy Zizek's writing so much. For new readers, it will be the beginning of a long and meaningful relationship.

Download or read book A Path Through Suffering written by Elisabeth Elliot and published by Revell. This book was released on 2003-10-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Must we stumble through sorrow and tragedy without understanding or is there a lighted way--a path--through suffering? Elisabeth Elliot plots the treacherous passage through pain, grief, and loss a journey most of us will make many times in our life. Through it all, she says, there is only one reliable path, and if you walk it, you will see the transformation of all your losses, heartbreaks, and tragedies into something strong and purposeful. In this powerful moving book, Elisabeth Elliot does not hesitate to ask hard questions, to examine tenderly the hurts we suffer, and to explore boldly the nature of God whose sovereign care for us is so intimate and perfect that he confounds our finite understanding. A Path through Suffering is a book for anyone searching for faith, comfort, and assurance.

Download or read book Parables of the Cross written by I. Lilias Trotter and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isabella Lilias Trotter (1853-1928) was an artist and a missionary for over 38 years to the Muslims of Algeria. John Ruskin, the famous art critic, didn't believe that ladies could paint before he met Lilias. He changed his mind after he met her and believed that if she would give her life to painting she could become the greatest painter of the nineteenth century. Ruskin believed that if she would devote herself to art "she would be the greatest living painter and do things that would be immortal. " He was unhappy that she was spending so much time on the streets of London, helping with the YWCA, when he thought she ought to be painting. Lilias, however, decided to give up her career in art in order to serve God. She always remained a good friend of Ruskin's though, and they wrote many letters when she was in Algeria. She also wrote several books - beautifully illustrated by herself, including: Parables of the Cross (1894), Parables of the Christ-Life (1899), and a book for Sufi Muslims, The Way of the Sevenfold Secret.

Download or read book Suffering Well and Suffering With written by Aimee Patterson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a society that has little tolerance for suffering. Suffering is not only unpleasant. Profound, innocent suffering can upend our sense of identity. Yet, we push suffering people to the periphery to avoid an uncomfortable truth: We are all subject to suffering. In a time when Christian churches suffer the loss of authority, influence, and membership, Patterson challenges the idea that we need such power to live on earth as in heaven. Only God can transform suffering into joy. Drawing on her experience with cancer, Patterson claims Christians hold certain responsibilities while we wait for this transformation. Revisiting the story of Job, she confronts the problem of suffering and what it takes to suffer well. This sets the scene for what a fleshy, wounded Jesus Christ calls us to do: use suffering to build compassionate relationships with others who suffer.
