Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 11 Fascinating though it is for leisured minds to jigsaw ancient writings and to separate the sections with a view to subsequent refitting, interesting though Scripture critics are to one another as brethren in a guild of fellow-workers, it dare not be forgotten, and it cannot too sternly be insisted, that the function Of New Testament study is to elucidate the New Testament, to let in fresh light upon its venerable pages, and, not less Often, to free them from the wrappings Of tradition so that they may as of Old shine by their Own light upon the minds Of men. It is not altogether a whole some sign when Our literary and critical introductions to the books Of the New Testament become a mass of figures and a nexus Of alternative opinions. They are full of honest personal work. Rightly used, they are a help such as no earlier generation ever enjoyed. But they do not and they will not inspire as slighter [and sometimes less able works have done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. D Ver. 10: I f we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar - with the clauses which follow them, and state the opposite conditions. Then let him turn to the best modern com mentary, the result of many years of deep thought, and he will see in those clauses no aimless tautology, or mere varied reiteration, but the warning against three wholly different types of the falsity which causes men to ignore the reality of sin, to deceive themselves as to their responsibility for sin, and to proclaim their own personal immunity from sin, and so to miss the possibility of fellowship with God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, 1884, Vol. 7 The line of thought we are about to call in question is worked out mainly in the first and second chapters Of his work, which are headed respectively by the words Biogenesis and Degeneration. In the first Mr. Drummond takes up the dictum Of Science, that life can only spring from life, and shews that this law holds good in the spiritual no less than in the natural world. Time was when men of science, and even eminent men of science, held the theory of spontaneous generation - held, i.s. That life is capable Of springing into being of itself, Of being educed or evolved from that which is without life. And this theory was very welcome to the fanatical believers in Evolution, who reject the very thought Of miracle, of supernatural intervention, of the presence, activity, nay, Of the very existence of God. It is to the credit Of this scientific school, therefore, that they have themselves conducted the experiments which disproved the theory of spontaneous generation; and that such men as Virchow, Huxley, Tyndall, have been foremost in pro claiming that life cannot be evolved from things without life, that it can only spring from a pre-existent life. All the other serials have been completed in Volume xii., if not before; but this must be left for completion in the New Series. During the Six years of its existence the Staff of the expositor has been doubled; and I have still to announce two most welcome additions to it. R. H. Hutton, Esq. (editor of T/ze Spectator), one of the first of living Biblical critics, and the Rev. Henry \vace, whose Boyle and Bampton Lectures have placed him in the front rank of the expositors and defenders of the Christian Faith, have both promised early contributions to the New Series: in which the Dean of Peterborough will continue his exposition of the Book Ecclesiastes; while Dr. George Matheson will contribute a work on The Historical Christ of St Paul, Professor Robertson Smith will write on Christ and the Angels - virtually a commentary on Hebrews i. And ii. - and Professor Plumptre will give a series of papers on The Assyrian and the Baby lonian Writings as they bear on the Old Testament Scriptures. In addition to these four important works, articles for next year's issue have been promised by the Dean of Canterbury, Canon Farrar, Dr. Sanday, Professor Milligan, Dr. Bruce Dr. Rawson Lumby, Mr. Beet, and Professor Godwm. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 22 There is grace as well as truth in these creative words which has not always been observed. For it was a delicate situation which one less gracious and refined would almost certainly have spoiled. But both by gesture and by judg ment all His own He bore it up into a region in which the natural bonds of home and kindred were transcended but not destroyed, and in which everything was made to rest upon the spiritual principle of the practice of the will of God. Where that Obtained, there was the basis as there were the bonds of a holy family in truth, potentially as vast as the human family itself. So without a hint of censure or even of impatience towards His too obtrusive friends He simply re-affirmed His principle in relation to the family, His own and every other, making it consist of those, the old and young alike, who chose to do the Father's will and who in conse quence were bound to Him by ties as dear as those of mother, sister brother. These were His next of kin in fact and fully, who, m the words of thefourth Evangelist, were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. It was no doubt upon the same occasion that a certain woman catching sight of Jesus' mother lifted up her voice and broke into fervent praises of her blessedness. And once again, without disclaiming aught of the truth extolled, Jesus took and changed it into a form in keeping with his master-thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 10 When Caiaphas, the titular Jewish High Priest and the agent of a much more crafty man, the actual High Priest Annas, laid down this principle in the High Council of the nation that it was expedient one man should die for the nation, and used this principle as an argument for the judicial murder of Jesus Christ, Caiaphas afforded a remarkable illustration of how one may mean what is utterly false and may at the same time say what is profoundly true. Caiaphas in this utterance was defending the most wicked act in all human history, and he was declaring one of the most precious truths in all human experience. What he meant was that it would be a good stroke of policy to silence Jesus for ever, because Jesus was teaching unwelcome truths, and might deliver His fellow-countrymen from the yoke of the Temple exactions. What really happened as the result of his action was that Jesus overcame the power of sin upon the Cross of Calvary and achieved the spiritual deliverance of the human race. Many good things, as, for instance, the English Reformation, have sprung from the basest of motives, and one has ever carefully to distinguish between the malign scheme of the Jewish ruler, which is ever to be reprobated, and its splendid results in the redemption of Jesus Christ. For in this case also God made light to spring out of darkness, and where sin abounded grace has much more abounded. Oh their behalf I sanctify myself, in order that they too may be sanctified in truth. Their Lord has sent them forth into the world, even as He had Himself been sent forth for this mission they must be sanctified to this they were designated by their title of apostles. By way of prelude and pre liminary trial He had already sent them out (see especially Matt. Let this sanctification be realized in Christ's present servants and take effect, it is possible then to fore see those who will believe through their word (v. For whom He will ask that they also may be grafted into the Divine fellowship of which these His brethren are par takers. Let this process of sanctification continue, extend ing from the Head to the multiplying members, and the filial union of men with Christ in God will embrace a wider and yet wider circle, until the day appears when, as J esas assures Himself before the Father, the world, that now proclaims Him a blasphemer, shall believe that thou didst send me (o. When the authority given to Him over all flesh shall be made good and Jesus shall be Lord of the full heritage which is His right amongst men It is evident therefore that our blessed Lord looked to the sanctification of Christian men, under the action of the Holy Spirit (xv. 26 as the means of the world's conversion to faith in Him. Here He discovered the aggressive, assimilative principle of His religion, that which should give to Christianity its positive character in this lies its working energy, its propulsive force. Download or read book The Expositor Vol 6 Classic Reprint written by Samuel Cox and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 6 There is probably no story in the Old Testament that is more frequently spoken of with mocking incredulity than the story of Jonah and the whale. But I think it likely that of those who make merry with the story, there are very many who have never read the book which contains it; and further, that of those who have read the book, a very small proportion have thought seriously enough about it to discover its wonderful meaning. For the book of Jonah is one of the most wonderful books of the Old Testament. It is a book which no Jew would ever have written except under the teaching of the Spirit of God. First: let us consider to what description of literature the book belongs. It is placed among the books of the prophets, but we see at the first glance that it is very unlike Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Micah and the rest of the books of the same class. It is history, not a prophecy; it is the story of a passage in the life of a prophet, not a collection of the messages which a prophet delivered in God's name to the Jewish people. It is a history, I say, not a prophecy; but it is not placed among the historical books. Nor is it a poetical book like Job; with the exception of the Psalm in the second chapter it is a prose composition. To what class then does it belong? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, 1904, Vol. 9 And now, just because we desire, in the spirit of this prayer, to strengthen in ourselves and others a truly spiritual faith, and with a View to this, to get to the heart of the older Bible, it is our duty to listen to voices which call us back for a time to preliminary tasks as yet imperfectly accomplished. By all means let us, each and all, make what contributions we can to the higher exegesis, but let no one think it superfluous to scrutinize somewhat closely the text on which we still for the most part base our critical work. To the comparative soundness of parts it is hardly safe to speak more definitely - of the received text, I hear my testimony no one who has passed through the school of the great period now closed can do otherwise. And yet it is only too possible that some, or even many, parts may have been only half understood owing to a super ficiality and anarrowness in our use of critical method. The mere suspicion of this ought to make us nobly discon tented, and if it can be proved that there is more than a mere suspicion of it, we ought not to rest till we have begun the hard work of a re-examination of the texts. In the bracing air of a new century We ought not to feel any task beyond our powers, knowing that God, who allots to each century its task, can so intensify our will that we shall be able to do better than what has hitherto been deemed our best. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 18 Vol. Xvhi. July, 19 19.such as Robertson Smith's Prophets of Israel. Or if this be too ambitious an undertaking to begin with, there is Dr. Nairne's delightful little volume, The Faith of the Old Testament, which is popular in the best sense of the word and is alive to'the many-sided beauty of the Old Testament as a noble collection of literature, made in the interests Of a living and continuous faith. In this little book the broad positions of Criticism are pressupposed, but no undue space is devoted to the discussion of purely critical problems as such. The author is concerned rather with the larger aspects of the Old Testament literature as a whole, and as the expression of a living religion, which are apt to be lost' sight of when it is regarded as merely a text to be ana lysed. The aim of the book is essentially constructive. It is to show how the Old Testament, with the broad results of, criticism pre-supposed, may be regarded as a progres sive witness to the life of faith. Its [i.e. The Old Testament's] importance, says Dr. Nairne, 18 not artistic or even historical so much as moral. It means that the whole of the Old Testament comes to us from the Jewish Church. It is more than a collection of fragments from those earlier times when ancient Israel was in strife with its own paganism, painfully and vigorously forging a purer faith in the furnace which the divine spirit made white-hot. It is not a book of fragments but an inspired collection. It is not a mere tradition, but an interpretation. 1 The servme which Criticism can and does render is to make the process Of growth clear. But'if it forgets that all the while a continuous living faith was at work, mould ing and selecting the materials for its own purposes - if this primary'fact be forgotten or ignored, Criticism will itself lose its bearings and inevitably go astray. This has some times happened. Take, for instance, the Book of Isaiah. Critical analysis reveals not merely the presence Of' two 1 The Faith of the Old Testament, p. 6.
