The spirit of Elijah, they said, does rest on Elisha and it was true. Yet who is not struck with the difference, with the contrariety, between them? And who does not trace in this contrast the manifoldness, the flexibility, the appropriateness too, of God's working, as the Book of God has delineated, as the Church of God has exemplified, it? The theory of evolution, by assuming one intelligible and adequate principle of change, Simply eliminates the notion of creation from those regions of existence to which it is applied. The Duke of Argyll states the matter more truly in his Unity of Nature, p. 272 Crea tion and evolution, therefore, when these terms have been cleared from intellectual confusion, are not antagonistic conceptions mutually exclusive. They are harmonious and complementary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 6: With Etching of Rev. Alexander Maclaren, D.D. By H. Manesse Such a thing I take to be the existence of the Christian ministry as a distinct order. That the distinction between clergy and laity was recognised at the end of the second century is so notorious that detailed proof is superfluous. Nve never lose sight of the distinction as we trace the history back. When we come to one of the earliest of extra-canonical writings, the Epistle of Clement, the dis tinction between the clergy and laity is well marked. The former office is so regarded as permanent, that the deposition of a presbyter against whom no grave offence can be charged is treated as a sin. When we turn to the New Testament writings, we find, in the Oldest document in the collection, the First Epistle to the Thessalonians (v. A class of men commended as highly deserving, for their work's sake, of the esteem and love of those addressed; and these are described as labouring among them, as being over them in the Lord, and as admonishing them. From the second of these phrases we infer that the persons described held permanent Office in the Church and from the third that the work in which they laboured, if at all secular, was not entirely so. This completely har monizes with the admonition in a later epistle (heb. Xiii. Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch in behalf of your souls, as they that shall give an account. It is needless to produce other New Testament testimony, for I regard it as beyond dispute that the Church from the first had officers, charged not merely with secular but with spiritual duties. What gra dations of office there were, and what things there were which a clergyman might do and a layman might not, are points remaining for inquiry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 1 This lecture originally formed one of a series connected with Christian evidences, and delivered in St. George's Hall in 1871. The other lectures were published shortly afterwards; but, not having been informed beforehand that publication was expected, I withheld my own from the volume. It seemed to me that in the course of a single lecture I could only touch the fringes of a great subject, and that injustice would be done by such imperfect treatment as alone time and opportunity allowed. Moreover I was then, and for some terms afterwards, engaged in lecturing on this Gospel at Cambridge, and I entertained the hope that I might be able to deal with the subject less inadequately if I gave myself more time. Happily it passed into other and better hands, and I was relieved from this care. A rumour got abroad at the time, and has (I am informed) been since repeated, that I did not allow the lecture to be published, because I was dissatisfied with it. I was only dissatisfied in the sense which I have already explained. It could not be otherwise than unsatisfactory to bring forward mere fragmentary evidence of an important conclusion, when there was abundant proof in the background. The present publication of the lecture is my answer to this rumour. I give it after eighteen years exactly in the same form in which it was originally written, with the exception of a few verbal alterations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 22 There is grace as well as truth in these creative words which has not always been observed. For it was a delicate situation which one less gracious and refined would almost certainly have spoiled. But both by gesture and by judg ment all His own He bore it up into a region in which the natural bonds of home and kindred were transcended but not destroyed, and in which everything was made to rest upon the spiritual principle of the practice of the will of God. Where that Obtained, there was the basis as there were the bonds of a holy family in truth, potentially as vast as the human family itself. So without a hint of censure or even of impatience towards His too obtrusive friends He simply re-affirmed His principle in relation to the family, His own and every other, making it consist of those, the old and young alike, who chose to do the Father's will and who in conse quence were bound to Him by ties as dear as those of mother, sister brother. These were His next of kin in fact and fully, who, m the words of thefourth Evangelist, were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. It was no doubt upon the same occasion that a certain woman catching sight of Jesus' mother lifted up her voice and broke into fervent praises of her blessedness. And once again, without disclaiming aught of the truth extolled, Jesus took and changed it into a form in keeping with his master-thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 3 For the word fulfilment, then, we might substitute, as we mean rather that, the realization of prophecy. Thus, for instance, when in the first Gospel we have over and over again, as was natural in a Gospel written for Jewish readers, the expression that it might be fulfilled which was spoken, we may very well paraphrase that for ourselves that there might be a realization of that which was spoken. This will help us a little in solving the difficulty which troubles some minds when St. Matthew or St. Paul adopts Rabbinic modes of explanation of the older Scriptures. The writer, without discussing the legitimacy of the mode of interpretation, is appealing to his hearers on their own grounds. Here, he says, you can see a realization of what your own teachers have practically taught you to expect. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, 1882, Vol. 4 Indeed, for many years after the death of Christ, the primitive Church felt no need of Christian Scriptures. They heard the Gospel from the lips of Evangelists; and if they wanted Scriptures, had they not the Law and the Prophets, all of whom bore witness to Christ? And these Scriptures of the Old Testament were the Scriptures which the Apostles constantly quoted, -these and no other. Whether it be Peter who speaks, or Paul, you find him for ever basing himself on the Hebrew Scriptures - citing Moses, or David, Isaiah, Joel, or Jeremiah. Whether they speak to Jews or to Gentiles, the Apostles have no other Scriptures but these; but these are for ever in their hearts and on their lips. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 14 But before proceeding to this, it is necessary to point out that even if the text, as assumed by Dr. Wright, and accepted by Dr. Robertson, is right, there is no certainty whatever about their translation. Robertson quotes Swete for a reference to Enoch, Chapter xx., where we find the expres sion the one, 6 els, Of the holy angels. One naturally turns to see whether this expression implies an angel who has primacy, such as is suggested for Judas in Mark, and we find to our surprise that it is used for a sequence Of angels, one after another, who are incapable collectively of primacy in relation to one another.1 It seems, there fore, tha't both the text and the translation may be wrong. But I will not, for reasons given above, press these points unduly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Oh their behalf I sanctify myself, in order that they too may be sanctified in truth. Their Lord has sent them forth into the world, even as He had Himself been sent forth for this mission they must be sanctified to this they were designated by their title of apostles. By way of prelude and pre liminary trial He had already sent them out (see especially Matt. Let this sanctification be realized in Christ's present servants and take effect, it is possible then to fore see those who will believe through their word (v. For whom He will ask that they also may be grafted into the Divine fellowship of which these His brethren are par takers. Let this process of sanctification continue, extend ing from the Head to the multiplying members, and the filial union of men with Christ in God will embrace a wider and yet wider circle, until the day appears when, as J esas assures Himself before the Father, the world, that now proclaims Him a blasphemer, shall believe that thou didst send me (o. When the authority given to Him over all flesh shall be made good and Jesus shall be Lord of the full heritage which is His right amongst men It is evident therefore that our blessed Lord looked to the sanctification of Christian men, under the action of the Holy Spirit (xv. 26 as the means of the world's conversion to faith in Him. Here He discovered the aggressive, assimilative principle of His religion, that which should give to Christianity its positive character in this lies its working energy, its propulsive force.
