Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor's Dictionary of Texts, Vol. 1 of 2: Containing Outlines, Expositions, and Illustrations of the Bible Texts, With Full References to the Best Homiletic Literature; Genesis to St. Mark Unobserved sins And he (moses) looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian.' exodus u. 12. I. To think oneself unobserved often makes way for sin. Moses was unwatched and unobserved and it was the thought of being unobserved that tempted Moses to his homicide. There is a somewhat similar scene in the New Testament in the Story of the denial of Simon Peter. What made it so easy for Peter to fall that night was the thought that there was nobody to see. There are some natures which are intensely sensitive to the reproaching or Upbraiding look of human eyes. There are multitudes to whom the smile of heaven means little, but who would not forfeit for worlds the smile of men. There are many whom the fear of God cannot restrain who are yet restrained by the fear of human censure. And Sin, taking occasion by that law, whispers to men that they are unobserved, and so makes it easier to transgress. Book A New Look at Atonement in Leviticus

Download or read book A New Look at Atonement in Leviticus written by James A. Greenberg and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, James A. Greenberg examines animal sacrifice in Priestly Torah texts found in Leviticus 1–16, Exodus, and Numbers. Through his analysis, Greenberg identifies a new valence of kipper as a process that produces a positive result between two objects and argues that the Israelite sanctuary exists to facilitate a connection between YHWH, sancta, and the Israelites through the medium of blood. Rather than beginning with a priori assumptions of what sacrificial terms and symbols mean, Greenberg allows his interpretation to develop through an accumulation of textual clues. To avoid the exegetical pitfalls of symbolic and structuralist approaches, he focuses on what the language of the ritual says about sacrifice and what it seeks to accomplish. His investigation considers why the flesh and blood of an animal are used by the priest as he mediates on behalf of the offerer through the medium of YHWH’s sanctuary, what the difference is between intentional and unintentional sin, how the meaning of kipper changes from one sacrifice to the next, whether the sanctuary can be both holy and unclean, and how priests conceive of YHWH’s interaction with sancta, the offerer, and the animal. A New Look at Atonement in Leviticus recalibrates our understanding of kipper and furthers our knowledge of the priestly cult in ancient Israel. It will especially interest scholars of Biblical Hebrew and the Old Testament in particular.

Book Voice of Nonconformity

Download or read book Voice of Nonconformity written by Keith A Ives and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of William Robertson Nicoll, a non-conformist individual who had considerable influence in the late 19th Century. Originally a minister, he was considered a great leader and was also a theological conservative, and therefore committed to maintaining the orthodox stance of the Christian Churches, but at the same time, he encouraged many of the new ideas, which he felt would prove a useful and hopeful benefit for the Church. Due to health issues he was later forced to retire his position and focused on work as an editor and journalist, bringing with him the same sense of leadership he had previously been known for. The debate over his legacy continues and is addressed within this study using previously unstudied information on Nicoll's life.
