Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, 1875, Vol. 1 The expositor will be, as its name indicates, devoted to the Exposition of the Sacred Scriptures. It will con tain Expository Essays and Discourses, Commentaries on the various Books of the Bible, and, occasionally, reviews of such works as are found to be most helpful in the study of the Inspired Word; in short, it will aim at gathering to itself whatever may throw light upon the sacred page. It will not address itself to scholars exclusively or mainly, but to the intelligent Christian public in general: At the same' time, it will be written by men who have already distinguished themselves in the field of Biblical criticism and exegesis, and should therefore contain much that even scholars will value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, 1882, Vol. 4 Indeed, for many years after the death of Christ, the primitive Church felt no need of Christian Scriptures. They heard the Gospel from the lips of Evangelists; and if they wanted Scriptures, had they not the Law and the Prophets, all of whom bore witness to Christ? And these Scriptures of the Old Testament were the Scriptures which the Apostles constantly quoted, -these and no other. Whether it be Peter who speaks, or Paul, you find him for ever basing himself on the Hebrew Scriptures - citing Moses, or David, Isaiah, Joel, or Jeremiah. Whether they speak to Jews or to Gentiles, the Apostles have no other Scriptures but these; but these are for ever in their hearts and on their lips. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, 1904, Vol. 9 And now, just because we desire, in the spirit of this prayer, to strengthen in ourselves and others a truly spiritual faith, and with a View to this, to get to the heart of the older Bible, it is our duty to listen to voices which call us back for a time to preliminary tasks as yet imperfectly accomplished. By all means let us, each and all, make what contributions we can to the higher exegesis, but let no one think it superfluous to scrutinize somewhat closely the text on which we still for the most part base our critical work. To the comparative soundness of parts it is hardly safe to speak more definitely - of the received text, I hear my testimony no one who has passed through the school of the great period now closed can do otherwise. And yet it is only too possible that some, or even many, parts may have been only half understood owing to a super ficiality and anarrowness in our use of critical method. The mere suspicion of this ought to make us nobly discon tented, and if it can be proved that there is more than a mere suspicion of it, we ought not to rest till we have begun the hard work of a re-examination of the texts. In the bracing air of a new century We ought not to feel any task beyond our powers, knowing that God, who allots to each century its task, can so intensify our will that we shall be able to do better than what has hitherto been deemed our best. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, 1876, Vol. 4 Nor is it divines and expositors alone who have been fascinated by the spell Of this sublime Poem. It is hardly possible to speak Of it to an educated and thoughtful man who does not acknowledge its extraordinary power, its unrivalled excellence; while men of genius, to whom the greatest works Of lite rature in many languages are familiar, are forward to confess that it stands alone, far above the head Of all other and similar performance. Thus, Thomas Carlyle, our greatest living author, who can hardly be suspected of any clerical bias or prepossessions, says of this Book: 1 I call that, apart from all theories about it, one of the grandest things ever written with pen. One feels, indeed, as if it were not Hebrew; such a noble universality, different from noble patriotism or noble sectarianism, reigns in it. A noble Book; all men's Book! It is our oldest statement Of the never-ending Problem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 22 There is grace as well as truth in these creative words which has not always been observed. For it was a delicate situation which one less gracious and refined would almost certainly have spoiled. But both by gesture and by judg ment all His own He bore it up into a region in which the natural bonds of home and kindred were transcended but not destroyed, and in which everything was made to rest upon the spiritual principle of the practice of the will of God. Where that Obtained, there was the basis as there were the bonds of a holy family in truth, potentially as vast as the human family itself. So without a hint of censure or even of impatience towards His too obtrusive friends He simply re-affirmed His principle in relation to the family, His own and every other, making it consist of those, the old and young alike, who chose to do the Father's will and who in conse quence were bound to Him by ties as dear as those of mother, sister brother. These were His next of kin in fact and fully, who, m the words of thefourth Evangelist, were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. It was no doubt upon the same occasion that a certain woman catching sight of Jesus' mother lifted up her voice and broke into fervent praises of her blessedness. And once again, without disclaiming aught of the truth extolled, Jesus took and changed it into a form in keeping with his master-thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 10 When Caiaphas, the titular Jewish High Priest and the agent of a much more crafty man, the actual High Priest Annas, laid down this principle in the High Council of the nation that it was expedient one man should die for the nation, and used this principle as an argument for the judicial murder of Jesus Christ, Caiaphas afforded a remarkable illustration of how one may mean what is utterly false and may at the same time say what is profoundly true. Caiaphas in this utterance was defending the most wicked act in all human history, and he was declaring one of the most precious truths in all human experience. What he meant was that it would be a good stroke of policy to silence Jesus for ever, because Jesus was teaching unwelcome truths, and might deliver His fellow-countrymen from the yoke of the Temple exactions. What really happened as the result of his action was that Jesus overcame the power of sin upon the Cross of Calvary and achieved the spiritual deliverance of the human race. Many good things, as, for instance, the English Reformation, have sprung from the basest of motives, and one has ever carefully to distinguish between the malign scheme of the Jewish ruler, which is ever to be reprobated, and its splendid results in the redemption of Jesus Christ. For in this case also God made light to spring out of darkness, and where sin abounded grace has much more abounded. Download or read book The Expositor Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Samuel Cox and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 1 This lecture originally formed one of a series connected with Christian evidences, and delivered in St. George's Hall in 1871. The other lectures were published shortly afterwards; but, not having been informed beforehand that publication was expected, I withheld my own from the volume. It seemed to me that in the course of a single lecture I could only touch the fringes of a great subject, and that injustice would be done by such imperfect treatment as alone time and opportunity allowed. Moreover I was then, and for some terms afterwards, engaged in lecturing on this Gospel at Cambridge, and I entertained the hope that I might be able to deal with the subject less inadequately if I gave myself more time. Happily it passed into other and better hands, and I was relieved from this care. A rumour got abroad at the time, and has (I am informed) been since repeated, that I did not allow the lecture to be published, because I was dissatisfied with it. I was only dissatisfied in the sense which I have already explained. It could not be otherwise than unsatisfactory to bring forward mere fragmentary evidence of an important conclusion, when there was abundant proof in the background. The present publication of the lecture is my answer to this rumour. I give it after eighteen years exactly in the same form in which it was originally written, with the exception of a few verbal alterations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 6 WE have now studied all the Scriptures which relate to Balaam, and if our study has added but few new features to his character, it has served, I hope, to bring out his features more clearly, to cast higher lights and deeper shadows upon them, and to define and enlarge our conceptions both of the good and Of the evil qualities of the man. The problem Of his character - how a good man could be so bad and a great man so base - has not yet been solved; we are as far per haps from its solution as ever: but something - much has been gained if Oonly we have the terms of that problem more distinctly and fully before our minds. To reach the solution of it, in so far as we can reach it, we must fall back on the second method of inquiry which, at the outset, I proposed to employ. We must apply the comparative method to the history and character of Balaam; we must place him beside other prophets as faulty and sinful as himself, and in whom the elements were as strangely mixed as they were in him: we must endeavour to classify him, and to read the problem Of his life in the light of that of men of his own order and type. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 7 Amid many editions of the Pauline letters, that are appear ing in rapid succession, almost all of them containing good work and some quite remarkable work, I may be pardoned for devoting a special measure of attention to the elaborate edition of the two Epistles to the Thessalonians by Dr. George Milligan, who shows himself heir to the taste, the industry, and the love for learning of his distinguished father. I had the pleasure of counting him for a short time among my earliest pupils, when I first entered on the work of University lecturing and for this reason I began to read his book with a special interest, which was increased in perusal by its merits. Dr. Milligan's edition marks in several important respects a distinct progress in method beyond the customary style of commentary on the Pauline Epistles. It not merely contains a learned and carefully pondered treatment of all the topics and subjects of discussion arising out of the Epistle, which would form the staple of a commentary of the usual kind but in addition it essays the difficult task of placing before the student a summary of all that recent research in certain other directions has contributed to the illustration of the Epistles. All the other serials have been completed in Volume xii., if not before; but this must be left for completion in the New Series. During the Six years of its existence the Staff of the expositor has been doubled; and I have still to announce two most welcome additions to it. R. H. Hutton, Esq. (editor of T/ze Spectator), one of the first of living Biblical critics, and the Rev. Henry \vace, whose Boyle and Bampton Lectures have placed him in the front rank of the expositors and defenders of the Christian Faith, have both promised early contributions to the New Series: in which the Dean of Peterborough will continue his exposition of the Book Ecclesiastes; while Dr. George Matheson will contribute a work on The Historical Christ of St Paul, Professor Robertson Smith will write on Christ and the Angels - virtually a commentary on Hebrews i. And ii. - and Professor Plumptre will give a series of papers on The Assyrian and the Baby lonian Writings as they bear on the Old Testament Scriptures. In addition to these four important works, articles for next year's issue have been promised by the Dean of Canterbury, Canon Farrar, Dr. Sanday, Professor Milligan, Dr. Bruce Dr. Rawson Lumby, Mr. Beet, and Professor Godwm.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 3 For the word fulfilment, then, we might substitute, as we mean rather that, the realization of prophecy. Thus, for instance, when in the first Gospel we have over and over again, as was natural in a Gospel written for Jewish readers, the expression that it might be fulfilled which was spoken, we may very well paraphrase that for ourselves that there might be a realization of that which was spoken. This will help us a little in solving the difficulty which troubles some minds when St. Matthew or St. Paul adopts Rabbinic modes of explanation of the older Scriptures. The writer, without discussing the legitimacy of the mode of interpretation, is appealing to his hearers on their own grounds. Here, he says, you can see a realization of what your own teachers have practically taught you to expect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor Adv. Ila-r. Iii. 1. The question as to whether St. Matthew did or did not write in Hebrew would take a volume to discuss, and would then leave us not very much nearer to a decision so far as our present subject is concerned. In the case of the principal witness Papias (ap. Busch. II. E. Iii. The difficulty is not so much to determine the historical value of the statement (for this, proceeding as it does from the first half of the second century, cannot but be considerable) as to explain with reference to it the phenomena presented by the Gospel. All we are told is that it was in the days when the Judges judged (chap. I. Ver. But as Israel was under the Judges for nearly five centuries - as long, let us say, as from the accession of the Plantagenet Henry V. To the present day - the phrase does not go far toward dating the Book. But another phrase in it (chap. Iv. Vers. 21, from which we learn that Boaz was the great grandfather of David, makes it pretty certain that the Judge, in whose days Ruth the alien was admitted to the Commonwealth of Israel, was the venerable but most unhappy Eli. Ruth's son was Jesse's father; Jesse was the father of David. It is very probable, therefore, that, when he was a child, Ruth may have fondled Jesse in her arms.
