Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor Adv. Ila-r. Iii. 1. The question as to whether St. Matthew did or did not write in Hebrew would take a volume to discuss, and would then leave us not very much nearer to a decision so far as our present subject is concerned. In the case of the principal witness Papias (ap. Busch. H. E. Iii. The difficulty is not so much to determine the historical value of the statement (for this, proceeding as it does from the first half of the second century, cannot but be considerable) as to explain with reference to it the phenomena presented by the Gospel. The same difficulty attaches to the fragment relating to St. Mark. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. And with what aims? The writers of the history were prophetic men, who wrote with the same principles that animated the prophets, and for the same ends as they pursued. All Hebrew history, not only the primitive, but the later, is written from one point of View, the two presuppositions being that God Is in all history of mankind, that He is the one Causality, and His communication of Himself to men the source of all good in them; and that He has from the beginning a purpose to found a perfect kingdom of God upon the earth. God rules the history; it is He that makes history; and this is at once the explanation of it, and the reason for recording it. It is not written for the sake of the mere events, but for the sake of their meaning. His tory is written in order to display the religious philosophy of the history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, 1878, Vol. 8 It is this new and larger conviction which gives form and colour to the thoughts recorded in the Chapter before us. True, he does not once utter that assured hope of a life beyond the grave which found such splendid expression in the closing Verses of Chapter xix. But, as I have just said, that hope was based on the conviction that the present life is not strictly and adequately retributive; and it is t/zz's conviction, still new and strange to his mind, on which his thoughts now work, seeking to define and formulate it. So that if, for the present, he says nothing more of the great hope which had brought light into his darkness, if he seems to sink to a lower level of meditation, lze sinks on{y to 1113 level on w/zz'c/z l'zz's Izapa rests is at work on t/ze basis on w/zz'c/z it stands, making it more solid and strong. If, therefore, we would do him justice, we must not conceive of him as lapsing from his hope into his old mood of scepticism and despair, but. Book The Expositor Vol 10 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Expositor Vol 10 Classic Reprint written by W. Robertson Nicoll and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 10 When Caiaphas, the titular Jewish High Priest and the agent of a much more crafty man, the actual High Priest Annas, laid down this principle in the High Council of the nation that it was expedient one man should die for the nation, and used this principle as an argument for the judicial murder of Jesus Christ, Caiaphas afforded a remarkable illustration of how one may mean what is utterly false and may at the same time say what is profoundly true. Caiaphas in this utterance was defending the most wicked act in all human history, and he was declaring one of the most precious truths in all human experience. What he meant was that it would be a good stroke of policy to silence Jesus for ever, because Jesus was teaching unwelcome truths, and might deliver His fellow-countrymen from the yoke of the Temple exactions. What really happened as the result of his action was that Jesus overcame the power of sin upon the Cross of Calvary and achieved the spiritual deliverance of the human race. Many good things, as, for instance, the English Reformation, have sprung from the basest of motives, and one has ever carefully to distinguish between the malign scheme of the Jewish ruler, which is ever to be reprobated, and its splendid results in the redemption of Jesus Christ. For in this case also God made light to spring out of darkness, and where sin abounded grace has much more abounded. He had Spiritual wealth (rack ham, Acts, p. 63) that far outweighed the value Of his land. The use of the singular (76 xpfipa) implies that Barnabas gave the total value of the sale to the support of the poor saints, quite in contrast to the duplicity of Ananias and Sapphira. Our first picture of Barnabas is that of a man of generous sympathies with the common people in spite of his more aristocratic affiliations. He was a cousin of John Mark (col. Iv. 10) whose mother, Mary, was likewise a woman of some wealth since her home in Jerusalem was the gathering place of the Jerusalem Christians (acts xii. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor, Vol. 22 There is grace as well as truth in these creative words which has not always been observed. For it was a delicate situation which one less gracious and refined would almost certainly have spoiled. But both by gesture and by judg ment all His own He bore it up into a region in which the natural bonds of home and kindred were transcended but not destroyed, and in which everything was made to rest upon the spiritual principle of the practice of the will of God. Where that Obtained, there was the basis as there were the bonds of a holy family in truth, potentially as vast as the human family itself. So without a hint of censure or even of impatience towards His too obtrusive friends He simply re-affirmed His principle in relation to the family, His own and every other, making it consist of those, the old and young alike, who chose to do the Father's will and who in conse quence were bound to Him by ties as dear as those of mother, sister brother. These were His next of kin in fact and fully, who, m the words of thefourth Evangelist, were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. It was no doubt upon the same occasion that a certain woman catching sight of Jesus' mother lifted up her voice and broke into fervent praises of her blessedness. And once again, without disclaiming aught of the truth extolled, Jesus took and changed it into a form in keeping with his master-thought.
