His career as artist, writer and explorer began in 1871 when he joined John Wesley Powell's second Grand Canyon expedition at age seventeen. From his sketches came the first oil paintings of the newly explored area. A Canyon Voyage, not published until 1908, was a detailed account of the venture. His later explorations took him to Alaska, Siberia, Iceland adn south America. He was author of several more books and worked in the Southwest both at the Arizona Historical Society, Tucson, and the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe.
