This book was released on 2016-09-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Experiences of a Barrister, and Confessions of an Attorney At the period referred to, Shep-keeping had not attained that degree of organization, with respect to counter-men and cashiers, which now distinguishes the great houses of trade. The primi tive till was not yet superseded. This was the weak point in Harvey's arrangements and not to make a needless number of words about it, the poor man was regularly robbed by a shep man, whose dexterity in pitching a guinea into the drawer, so as to make it jump, unseen, with a jerk into his hand, was worthy of Herr Dobler, or any other master of the sublime art of jugglery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Experiences of a Barrister Animated by these diabolical passions, Cartwright proceeded to his work. Harvey, he had too good reason to know, was in debt to persons who had made him advances and by means of artfully-concocted anonymous letters, evidently written by some one conversant with the matters on which he wrote, he succeeded in alarming the haberdasher's creditors. The consequences were - demands of immediate payment, and, in spite of the debtor's explanations and promises, writs, heavy law expenses, ruinous sacrifices, and ultimate bankruptcy. It may seem almost too marvelous for belief, but the story of this terrible revenge and its consequences is no fiction. Every incident in my narrative is true, and the whole may be found in hard outline in the records of the courts with which a few years ago I was familiar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classics of the Bar, Stories of the World's Great Legal, Trials and a Compilation of Forensic Masterpieces, Vol. 3 One of the most remarkable cases known to the jurisprudence of any nation was the trial of Alexander William Holmes, at the April term of the Circuit Court of the United States, held at Philadelphia, in 1842. It appeared from the evidence that Holmes was a member of the crew of the good ship, William Brown which left Liverpool, March 13, 1841, bound for Philadelphia. On Monday night, April 19th, the vessel struck an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland, and began to sink. The lifeboats were launched, but - even as it was in that later hour of human history when the ill-fated Titanic went to the bottom of the sea and broke the heart of the world - the lifeboats were few; and, although there were on board only sixtyfive passengers, thirty-one went down with the sinking ship. The others were transferred to the two small boats that were launched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Told Out of Court: Personal Experiences of Members of the Chicago Bench and Bar A notable feature of this book is that all the stories here told are - at least at the time of going to press - those of living, breathing entities, men whose faces are daily familiar on the streets of Chicago and in the courts, whose names are of frequent occurrence in the newspapers, in fact essentially men of today. Each gives his personal experience in his own vein, in many instances the narrative being strongly indicative of the personality of the narrator. The lawyer is the recipient of the troubles of poor humankind. Therefore many of the reminiscences are fraught with domestic tragedy and pathos. But in the main the presentation is a lively legal symposium, illumed by piquant observation and humorous comment, some of it emanating, as will be seen, from rather unexpected quarters. I cordially admit that the work of making the collection abounded in delay and difficulty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I work in the criminal justice system, and every day I see how fairness is not guaranteed. Too often the system fails those it is meant to protect. The innocent are wronged and the guilty allowed to walk free. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classics of the Bar, Vol. 6: Stories of the World's Great Legal Trials and a Compilation of Forensic Masterpieces In the January, 1845, issue of The Dew Drop, a temperance periodical published at Taunton, Mass., appeared an article entitled, "A Dream: was it all a dream?" which became the basis for an action for libel brought by William Wilbar against B. W. Williams, editor and publisher, and Messrs. Hack and Bradbury, printers of the paper. Wilbar was a storekeeper, selling groceries, liquors, etc. He contended that by the article he was grossly slandered, and sought damages in the sum of $30,000. The article complained of was as follows: A Dream "Was it all a dream?" As we sat in our room a few days since, thinking what more could be done to advance the cause of temperance in this community, we fell asleep and dreamed the following dream: We were in Rum Hollow, and by some irresistible impulse we were drawn into that house of human slaughter, kept by one Wilbar. Such sights as we there saw, may we never behold again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Meline, the Prime Minister, declared, amid the frantic applause of his complaisant majority, that he had confidence in the twelve citizens to whose hands he intrusted the defense of the army. It was of you, gentlemen, that he spoke. And just as General Billot dictated its decision to the court martial intrusted with the acquittal of Major Esterhazy, by appealing from the tribune for respect for the chose jugee, so likewise M. Meline wished to give you the order to condemn me out of respect for the army, which be accused me of having insulted! Book Essays by a Barrister

Download or read book Essays by a Barrister written by James Fitzjames Stephen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays by a Barrister: Reprinted From the Saturday It follows from this that Pascal's attack upon the Jesuits must either go a great deal further than its author intended it to go, or must be considered to apply at least as strongly to the Jansenists as to their opponents. Pascal was the partisan of a system of morality of the most rigid kind; and it is singular that it should not have been more frequently oh served, that in the Provincial Letters he continually lays himself open to retorts as to his own views, which it would have been very difficult to parry; and it may be added, that if, upon such a subject, any weight at all is to be attached to facts and history, it is not less difficult to justify his views of morality than to justify those which he attacked. In fact, the Jesuits' views have some advantages over his. Whatever were their faults, they seem to have felt that a system of morality which absolutely con demus the whole existing state of society, and which would, if adopted, bind in iron chains all the energies and all the affections of mankind, stands self - refuted. In their anxiety to bring human life within the pale of salvation, the Jesuits may have stretched their system further than they had any right to stretch it; but if it is once granted (and at that time it was universally admitted) that morality is capable of being reduced to a system at all, the wish that there may be some sort of proportionbetween that system and the actual state of human society is one to which it is impossible to refuse a considerable degree of sympathy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Barrister: Being Anecdotes of the Late Tom Nolan of the New York Bar (With Portrait) The Barrister, kept the bench and bar of New York laughing for along period of years. On the rare occasions when he was not witty himself, Counselor Nolan was the cause of wit in others, so that at the time of his all too early demise, there had clustered around his name a large if somewhat nebulous mass of anecdote, the greater part of which is founded in fact as well as in genuine Irish wit and hu mor. That some of the stories told on the Counselor are apochryphal, is inevitable. Such as are known to be so, are not herein set down.
