It relies on interviews and focus groups to examine how college students make decisions within the context of the "hook-up culture" (Heldman and Wade 2010) prominent on American campuses. Patterns in the qualitative data are examined quantitatively using the Online College Social Life Survey. To understand how students make decisions in hookup culture, I examine their views of relationships, how they enact relationships, and the effects of hooking up on relationships. I find that students envision relationships in their future, and choose not to expend time on them during their early undergraduate studies. Counter to common stereotypes, both male and female students express experience with and desire for relationships, which often form after a period of hooking up, not traditional dating, yet high-status students are more likely to experience dates and relationships. Hooking up also impacts relationships, as students rely on gendered stereotypes to evaluate their peers' behaviors and motivations; females think that males want sex, and males expect females to want a relationship, which complicates things for students whose desires are counter to these stereotypes. I next examine decisions about choice of partner and sexual activity. Gender expectations shape these choices for undergraduates. Men make decisions based on the accolades they expect from peers, while women make decisions to shield them from being labeled a slut, evidence of the double standard. To men, a "good" partner is one who is highly desired by others; women consider a "good" partner someone who is trusting and non-coercive. These gendered stereotypes also factor into sexual behaviors, where women engage in sex acts to cement the bond with her partner, as evidence of the relational imperative. Young men are also affected, and engage in sex acts when they do not want to, but do so to mitigate against any threat to his masculinity. As a result of gender role expectations, much of the sex on college campuses may not be fully desired by the parties, but it is an agentic choice because of the social outcome it produces.

Book excerpt: The relationship between higher levels of religiosity, reduced sexual behavior, and more conservative sexual attitudes has been well documented; however, fewer researchers have addressed the experience of sexual desire for the highly religious female Christian. This study extends research that has found relationships between religiousness, sex guilt, sexual desire, and the social context in which Christian college women navigate their sexual experiences. Multiple regression analysis (n = 580) was used to explore the relationship between high sexual desire, high orthodoxy, and sex guilt and to analyze the moderating role of comfort in peer conversations about sex-related topics. Themes extracted from qualitative responses (n = 628) were explored with regard to positive and negative contributors to comfort with peer communication around sexual desire, masturbation, sexual activity, etc., and how participants have been impacted as a result. Results demonstrated that among highly orthodox students, high levels of sexual desire predicted lower levels of sex guilt and that participant comfort in conversations with peers was a significant moderator in the relationship between sexual desire and orthodoxy, and sex guilt. Thematic analysis highlighted a number of important themes related to connection with peers, to include, among others, the importance of relationships, fear of judgment from others, and the positive impact of having one's experiences "normalized."

Book excerpt: The current study sought to examine the association between indicators of relationship quality, relational factors, demographic factors, and condom use at last penile-vaginal intercourse among heterosexual female college students (ages 18-22) using logistic regression analyses. Psychometric properties of the following scales were examined using exploratory factor analysis, correlation analyses, and Cronbach's alpha: the modified Perceived Relationship Quality Components Inventory (PRQC) (Fletcher, Simpson, & Thomas, 2000), the revised Sexual Decision-Making Dominance Subscale (Harvey, Bird, Galavotti, Duncan, & Greenberg, 2002), and the Global Measure of Sexual Satisfaction (Lawrance, Byers, & Cohen, 1998). The study utilized a cross-sectional design to administer an anonymous online survey (via Qualtrics) of 799 heterosexual female college students with an average age of 19.87 who were majority Caucasian/White (78.1%). About half of the study participants (N=404) reported not using a male latex condom at last penile-vaginal intercourse. Study findings revealed that as global perceived relationship quality increased, the odds of using condoms at last penile-vaginal intercourse decreased. Additionally, young women who independently (or with their sexual partners) decided when to engage in sexual intercourse were less likely to use a male latex condom at last penile-vaginal intercourse (compared to young women whose partner solely made the decision). Such findings highlight the importance of considering the relational context in which risky sexual behavior (i.e., unprotected sex) occurs.
