Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. For breast cancer, and indeed probably for any cancer, the report finds that psychosocial services can provide significant benefits in quality of life and success in coping with serious and life-threatening disease for patients and their families.

Personal experiences are described and explored using the heuristic research model. This model allowed me to remain deeply immersed in the question at all times. Computer searches revealed no similar studies as most of the studies regarded the physical and medical aspects of cancer. A literature review yielded a wide variety of references ranging from quantitative studies to autobiographies and self-help books. From my search I was able to position and support my study as original. Data were obtained from eight co-researchers' personal experiences of living with the threat of cancer recurring. Five co-researchers were women and three were men. Each interview was tape-recorded, transcribed and reviewed for themes. All major themes were identified and illustrated. The identified themes are: preoccupation with health concerns, major feelings, avoidance/repression, uncertainty, reality of death, and optimism. The interviews were personal and subjective according to qualitative research methods. The themes that emerged were poignant and depicted the painful and confusing impact that cancer has had on the co-researchers' lives. The study's findings are relevant to anyone encountering cancer or its recurrence. This study's implications and applications could be utilized by psychotherapists, educators, oncologists, nurses, and other health care professionals.
