Download or read book The Trinity and God the Creator written by Reginald Garrigou Lagrange and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trinity and God the Creator. Father Garrigou-Lagrange turns here to God the Trinity, who created the heavens and the earth and who is beheld in the contemplative vision to which all human beings are called--the vision that is their ultimate sanctification. In his characteristically-ordered style, Garrigou-Lagrange offers his interpretation of St. Thomas by expounding, explaining, and comparing the teaching of the angelic doctor to that of preceding and subsequent theologians. In particular, Garrigou-Lagrange depicts St. Thomas as fulfilling the foundation laid by St. Augustine: it is in their mutual relations that the divine persons are known as person. He lays special emphasis also on the call of all humans to contemplative holiness. The exposition of the Trinity is a beginning of the journey of contemplation by which a man or woman enters the life of God to be reformed according to the likeness of the Trinity in whose image he or she was first created, body and soul. Book excerpt: Gathering together some of the most influential theologians of the great awakening and the middle ages, this work takes a look at the theology behind the Trinity. These authors are thorough in their thinking on this topic and try to explain what exactly the Trinity is and what it means to worship a God that is one being in three different persons. Many Christians have struggles with this topic and how to arrange it within their thinking and their own worship and these works are an important step in figuring out one of the most prevalent and important mysteries in the Christian faith.

Book excerpt: The Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough have been united since 1216 and, unusually, contained two diocesan cathedrals: Christchurch and St Patrick's (until the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland in 1870). This volume lists the cathedral and parish clergy of the United Dioceses from the Middle Ages to the present, with biographies where possible. This volume is based on the work of Canon James Blennerhassett Leslie, rector of Kilsaran, Co. Louth from 1899-1951 and Chancellor of the Diocese of Armagh from 1934-1943. He published succession lists for several dioceses and left other lists in manuscript in the Library of the Representative Church Body. Three of those manuscripts form the foundation of this volume: Clergy of Dublin, Clergy of Glendalough and Fasti of Christ Church Cathedral. These are supplemented with lists for St Patricks Cathedral from H J Lawlor's Fasti of that Cathedral, published in 1930. The lists have been brought up-to-date to 2001. Over 4,000 names of clergy have been recorded, and brief historical notes on the parishes and churches in the dioceses are included. The present work is the fourth in the series of modern revisions of Canon Leslie's work to be published and is part fo the United Diocese' celebration of the Millennium. The work of revising and updating it for publication was carried out by W.J.R Wallace who retired as Senior History master in The High School, Dublin in 1996.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface:Knowledge of the truth necessary for man's salvation is comprised within a few brief articles of faith. The Apostle says in Romans 9:2 8: "A short word shall the Lord make upon the earth"; and later he adds: "This is the word of faith, which we preach" (Rom. 15:8). In a short prayer Christ clearly marked out man's right course; and in teaching us to say this prayer, He showed us the goal of our striving and our hope. In a single precept of charity He summed up that human justice which consists in observing the law: "Love therefore is the fulfilling of the law" (Rom. 13:15). Hence the Apostle, in 1 Corinthians 13:13, taught that the whole perfection of this present life consists in faith, hope, and charity, as in certain brief headings outlining our salvation: "Now there remain faith, hope, and charity." These are the three virtues, as St. Augustine says, by which God is worshiped [De doctrina christiana, 1, 35]Wherefore, my dearest son Reginald, receive from my hands this compendious treatise on Christian teaching to keep continually before your eyes. My whole endeavor in the present work is taken up with these three virtues. I shall treat first of faith, then of hope, and lastly of charity. This is the Apostle's arrangement which, for that matter, right reason imposes. Love cannot be rightly ordered unless the proper goal of our hope is established; nor can there be any hope if knowledge of the truth is lacking. Therefore the first thing necessary is faith, by which you may come to a knowledge of the truth. Secondly, hope is necessary, that your intention may be fixed on the right end. Thirdly, love is necessary, that your affections may be perfectly put in order.
