Book The Evolution of the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Evolution of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by John Elliotson Symes and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the New Testament The little volume which we call the New Testament has had more influence on the world than the whole literature of England or France. It consists of twenty-seven books, written eighteen centuries ago, in a degenerate form of Greek, by authors of Jewish race and scanty learning. Nevertheless, millions of persons still turn to the New Testament for guidance and for consolation. Such persons should surely wish to know in what order and in what circumstances these twenty-seven books were written; how many of them may be assigned to their traditional authors; what motives animated these men; whether any of the books are compilations from earlier documents; and how they came to occupy their unique position among Christian writings. Such questions will also interest, if to a less degree, those who reject Christianity, but are yet too wise to neglect or despise a literature merely because they do not share the views which it expresses. Moreover, we have here to do with a literature which has been the textbook of that religion on which modern civilization has to a great extent been built up, a religion which remains to-day one of the greatest of living forces. Many of the critics who in modern times have thrown light on the New Testament have themselves been unbelievers; but they have realized that the subject is one of profound interest and importance, and they have devoted immense learning and ability to its elucidation. Forty years ago some of these critics attributed most of the New Testament books to unknown writers of the second century, but it is now generally agreed that this attribution was based on insufficient grounds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament History: A Study of the Beginnings of Christianity This history might be more strictly called a study of the beginnings of Christianity. While designed primarily for use as a college textbook, it should be of equal value to any reader who wishes to trace the story of Christianity in its first days. This is first Of all a historical study. The average man has been wont to regard Christianity as a fixed and finished something that has been dropped down from the skies. If you speak of the Christian religion he will think first of all of a collection of writings, or of a body of doctrine, or Of the institution of the church. But these three, Bible and doctrine and church, are simply the products of a greater movement that lies back of them. To understand Christi amity we must go back to this great current of life which was at once the greatest revelation of the divine Spirit and the greatest movement of the human spirit that mankind has known. What was the world to which this new life came? What did its Founder teach and do? How did the world brotherhood come out of the little company of Jews that followed him? Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament History and Literature What is believed to be a unique feature of the book is the paraphrasing of the epistles and the apocalypse in modern, untechnical language. This last section in each of the later chapters, it is hoped, will help Bible students to get a clear, comprehensive grasp of the main teachings in each book. Another feature, it is hoped, that will be helpful to young students, busy pastors, and Sunday school teachers, is the bibliography given at the end of the book. Each student should provide himself with two other reference books from these lists - especially with the commentaries suggested in parts II-V. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines Of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings Of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books Of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use Of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number Of readers, such as teachers Of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim Of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal Of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Many Of the difficulties which are daily being raised on historical grounds are also touched upon, and the biblical student is supplied with constant references to further sources of in formation. Book The Story of the Revised New Testament

Download or read book The Story of the Revised New Testament written by Matthew Brown Riddle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Revised New Testament: American Standard Edition It was necessary in telling this story to begin at the inception of the movement for Revision. Hence this little book repeats many facts that were published when, and immediately after, the Revised New Testa ment of 1881 appeared. But another gener ation has grown up since that date, and much well known to Biblical scholars will be new to most readers to - day. Yet, even in telling of the labors before 1881, the writer, from his connection with the American Company of New Testament Revisers, has been able to include many facts not known to the general public. The account of the preparation of the Standard Edition of the American Revised New Testament has never been published before, and the writer has found, from many letters of inquiry, that little is known about the details. The same inquiries indicate a desire to learn the facts as here briefly presented. Thirty-five years have passed since the work began, and this sketch has been penned in the desire and hope of making these long years of labor. Book A History of the New Testament Times Vol 4

Download or read book A History of the New Testament Times Vol 4 written by Adolf Hausrath and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the New Testament Times, Vol. 4: The Time of the Apostles Paul had quitted Corinth at a moment when a great civic and political revolution loosened every tie, while the intensification of the general expectancy urged religious excitement yet higher. A long-looked-for change of government had taken place. In October, 54, a physician, skilled in poisonous drugs, aided Agrippina to remove Claudius in favour of Nero, now seventeen years of age. The magnitude of the crisis explains the intensity of apocalyptic feeling prevailing in the churches of Macedonia and Achaia. It may even account in part for the rapidity with which Paul's preaching of the approaching day of judgment penetrated Achaia. For since the beginning of the year 54 A.D., the Roman world lay in fearful expectancy. Gone were the hopeful times in which the accession even of a Caligula was greeted with confident acclamation. The heralds of Nero's reign were hideous portents and universal depression. We have seen in Thessalonica the form taken by this universal excitement in the little Christian circles. The same must have been the case in Corinth. The only class in a comfortable frame of mind were the God-forsaken Roman aristocracy, for whom the hour of judgment had actually come. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the New Testament Times, Vol. 2 The great changes in the organization of the empire which Augustus undertook upon his return to Rome in the autumn of the year 29 bc, did not at first affect J udaca, Since this country retained its sovereignty. The more did the people feel the greater activity in trade and commerce, which soon showed itself under the protection Of monarchy. In the East, the industries Of the Hellenists especially received a fresh impulse, but the mercantile Jews also honoured in Augustus the patron of their business. Streets and public buildings became the chief Objects of attention to the administration; and as Augustus himself, for the purpose, laid most serious contributions upon the public treasury, so also did he demand from his friends and connections Similar exertions for this end. Among the rulers who courted the favour of Rome, a genuine rivalry sprang up to attract attention by erecting build ings, laying out roads, improving streets, making aqueducts and canals, enlarging harbours, and similar works Of public utility, which was the more profitable Since the chief minister of state, Agrippa, almost surpassed his master and friend in this passion for building. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canon and d104 of the New Testament The consideration of the canon and the text of the New Testament forms a preface to the study of what is called intro duction. It is true that these two topics have sometimes of late years been remanded to the close of introduction, have been treated in a somewhat perfunctory way, and have been threatened with exclusion from the field. The earlier habit of joining them together and placing them at the front was much more correct. Now and then they were termed as a whole general introduc tion. The rest of introduction, the criticism of the contents of the books in and for themselves, was then called special introduction. The use of these names does not seem to me to be necessary. The introduction to the study of the New Testament is made up of three criticisms, of the critical treatment of three things.
