Book The Evolution of the Mammals of the Queen Charlotte Islands British Columbia

Download or read book The Evolution of the Mammals of the Queen Charlotte Islands British Columbia written by J. Bristol Foster and published by Department of Recreation and Conservation. This book was released on 1965 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islands, with their simplified ecosystems and isolation from other populations in both space & time, provide natural settings for the study of numerous disciplines in relation to evolution. The Queen Charlotte Islands are some of the more isolated islands on the north-west coast of North America and are therefore of special interest in the study of the biotic evolution of this region. The purpose of this paper is to report on an analysis of the evolution of the native land mammals of these islands. An important aspect is to determine how much of the endemism present on the islands is accounted for by reason of its being a relict population or how much is a contribution of the insularity of the environment. The paper begins with a review of the Islands' setting and an assessment of the possibility of glacial refugia being present on the island. The Islands' physiography, vegetation, endemic species, the impoverished nature of the fauna encountered, and the probability of species survival in a refugium during the last glaciation are reviewed. The second section examines eight species of native mammals in an attempt to reconstruct their past history in a Queen Charlotte setting. The research is based on field studies conducted in 1960 & 1961 and examination of specimens collected & specimens in museums. Sources of variation, rates of evolution, and factors responsible for species appearance or disappearance are discussed. The final chapter reviews the evolution of mammals on other islands to show any trends which may be present in insular mammals.

Book A New Island Biogeography of the Sea of Cort es

Download or read book A New Island Biogeography of the Sea of Cort es written by Ted J. Case and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-21 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated and expanded A New Island Biogeography of the Sea of Cort'es, first published nearly 20 years ago, integrates new and broader studies encompassing more taxa and more complete island coverage. The present synthesis provides a basis for further research and exploration in upcoming years of the biologically fascinating Sea of Cort'es region. The Gulf region is increasingly being exploited, for its natural resources by way of marine fisheries, and for its stunning natural beauty by way of a burgeoning tourism industry. Further, the region's human population is increasing apace. It is appropriate, therefore, that this volume discusses these evolving circumstances, and the efforts of the Mexican government to regulate and manage them. The new Biogeography includes a section on the conservation issues in the Sea of Cort'es, past accomplishments and conservation needs as yet outstanding. This book should be of strong interest to conservation biologists, ecologists, and evolutionary biologists more generally.

Download or read book Haida Gwaii written by Daryl W. Fedje and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most isolated archipelago on the west coast of the Americas, inhabited for at least 10,500 years, Haida Gwaii has fascinated scientists, social scientists, historians, and inquisitive travellers for decades. This book brings together the results of extensive and varied field research by both federal agencies and independent researchers, and carefully integrates them with earlier archaeological, ethnohistorical, and paleoenvironmental work in the region. It imparts significant new information about the natural history of Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, and the adjacent areas of Hecate Strait. Chapters analyze new data on ice retreat, shoreline and sea level change, faunal communities, and culture history, providing a more comprehensive picture of the history of the islands from the late glacial through the prehistoric period, to the time of European contact, known to the Haida as the "time of the Iron People."

Book Body Size in Mammalian Paleobiology

Download or read book Body Size in Mammalian Paleobiology written by John Douglas Damuth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-11-30 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing interest in the biological implications of body size in animals. This parameter is now being used to make inferences and predictions about not only the habits and habitat of a particular species, but also as a way to understand patterns and biases in the fossil record. This valuable collection of essays presents and evaluates techniques of body-mass estimation and reviews current and potential applications of body-size estimates in paleobiology. Coverage is particularly detailed for carnivores, primates and ungulates, but information is also presented on marsupials, rodents and proboscideans. Body Size in Mammalian Paleobiology will prove useful to researchers and graduate students in paleontology, mammalogy, ecology and evolution programmes. It is designed to be both a practical handbook for researchers making and using body-size estimates, and a sourcebook of ideas for applying body size to paleontological problems and directions for future research.

Book Hoofed Mammals of British Columbia

Download or read book Hoofed Mammals of British Columbia written by David M. Shackleton and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hoofed mammals (ungulates) are the most abundant large mammals in the world. They are also plentiful in British Columbia, which is home to nine wild native species: moose, elk, caribou, bison, mountain goat, two species of deer and two of sheep. There are also several introduced species. In Hoofed Mammals of British Columbia, David Shackleton presents a comprehensive summary of the most up-to-date information on these ungulates. In the well-illustrated introduction, he discusses their evolution and biology, survival adaptations, and social organization. He also covers conservation issues, tracking, and taxonomy. In the species accounts, he describes each species and subspecies and discusses their natural history: habitat, diet, behaviour, reproduction, life expectancy, and mortality factors, and predators. Each account includes a distribution map and data on taxonomy, recent population estimates, conservation status, and traditional aboriginal use. Excellent illustrations and two keys help identify each species by its external features or its skull. Hoofed Mammals of British Columbia is the third of six handbooks on the mammals of British Columbia, a Royal B.C. Museum project to update and expand the classic treatment by Ian McTaggart-Cowan and Charles Guiguet, The Mammals of British Columbia, last revised in 1965.
