Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, , language: English, abstract: Fielding is often considered one of the most significant contributors to the development of the English novel. His nearly seamless incorporation of drama, satire, romance, and epic into his works helped distinguish the novel as a new and unique genre quite distinct from its early influences. Fielding's long and bitter feud with rival novelist Samuel Richardson also contributed to the development of the novel form: opposed to the didactic tone and unrealistic characters and situations of his contemporaries, Fielding infused the novel with compassion, comedy, and a heightened sense of realism. His comic sense is deep and sometimes under it very serious themes may appear. Although Fielding's lasting reputation rests on his major novels, he was also a popular and important playwright, an influential journalist, and one of England's leading judicial reformers. In all of his writing, Fielding demonstrated a concern with social and moral hypocrisy, attacking not only Richardson but also dramatist and Poet Laureate Colley Cibber and Prime Minister Robert Walpole for what he considered their failure to deal openly with serious social issues, whether in literary works or as a government official. Nowadays his novels and his humor became popular again and in this work author is going to look deeply in one of the comic literary works”The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Henry Fielding: Complete in One Volume, With Memoir of the Author The objects, however, of Fielding's satire were always of a legitimate kind; and in no part of his works do we find anything like a sneer, either against religion or virtue. His farces partook all of the same character; they were admirable burlesque representations, and they were almost invariably successful. The production only of two or three mornings, and struck off in the heat of the moment, they nevertheless pleased the public, and still con tinne to enliven our winters on the stage, by the exquisite manner in which they hit the object at which they are aimed. The representations, says Bishop Hurd, of common nature may either be taken accurately, so as to reflect a faithful and exact image of their original, which alone is that I should call comedy or they may be forced or overcharged above the simple and just proportions of nature, as when the excesses of a few are given for standing cha racters; when not the man in general, but the pas sion is described, or when, in the draught of the man, the leading feature is extended beyond mea sure; and in these cases, the representation holds of the province of farce. This is a just and accurate definition, and the farces of Fielding comprehend all that is required: the mock tragedy of Tom Thumb' is considered replete with as fine a parody as per haps has ever been written; the Lottery, ' The Intriguing Chambermaid, ' and the Virgin Un masked, ' besides the real entertainment they afford, had also, on their first appearance, the merit of bringing out the comic genius of some of our best actresses. Of Mrs. Clive in particular, the author observes in one of his prefaces I cannot help te flecting that the town has one obligation to me, who made the first discovery of your just capacity, and brought you earlier forward on the theatre than the ignorance of some, and the envy of others, would otherwise have permitted. I shall not here dwell on anything so well known as your theatrical merit; which one of the finest judges, and the greatest man of his age, hath acknowledged to exceed, in humour, that of any of your predecessors in his time. Book Miscellanies by Henry Fielding Esq

Download or read book Miscellanies by Henry Fielding Esq written by Henry Fielding and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 1993-08 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains the fantasy, A Journey from This World to the Next, and two plays: the farce Eurydice, and The Wedding Day, a revision of an early intrigue comedy. Volume Three of Henry Fielding's Miscellanies, first published as a three-volume set in 1743, consists in its entirety of a major work of fiction, The History of the life of the Late Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great. Jonathan Wild takes its title from the 'thief-taker' and gangleader of that name who has hanged in 1725, but in Fielding's hands the history of Wild is transformed into a mock-historical work of sustained irony aimed at all who would be 'great men'. The general introduction to this edition sets the novel against its historical and biographical background and argues against the view, common and since the mid-nineteenth century, that it is a personal satire directed at the figure of Sir Robert Walpole. In both the general and the textual introductions, the editors also offer a fresh view on questions about the date and history of the work's composition. Full explanatory notes and commentary place Fielding's allusions and details in their contemporary context. As in previous volumes of the Wesleyan Edition, this provides a critical, unmodernized text, based on the Greg-Bowers 'Rationale of Copy-text'. The version is that of the first edition, with an appendix giving al variants in wording and presentation of the 1754 revision. In his introduction the textual editor lays out the rationale for his choice version. This volume also includes, for the first time in a modern edition, Fielding's list of subscribers to the Miscellanies, along with detailed biographical notes and an analysis of the subscription list by textual author.

Download or read book Henry Fielding written by Simon Varey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986-07-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise and lucid study provides an ideal introduction to the major work of Henry Fielding for all students. Fielding's stature as a great comic novelist is assured, but as Professor Varey illustrates, he was a remarkably versatile writer. In his day Fielding was one of England's leading dramatists and also pursued a career in law. He founded, edited, and contributed essays for four different periodicals, and wrote a political-satirical novel Jonathan Wild, in addition to a work of powerful social protest Amelia and his two outstanding contributions to the development of English prose fiction: Tom Jones and Joseph Andrews. Professor Varey clarifies and explains this varied body of writing, concentrating on Fielding's technique of combining opposites or apparently ill-matched elements - of language, character, narrative made, and even philosophical thought.

Book The Genius of Henry Fielding

Download or read book The Genius of Henry Fielding written by Henry Fielding and published by . This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Fielding has been much quoted and imitated, but for sound philosophy, piquancy of style and accuracy in portraying human nature in all its phases he has never been outshone by any of his pupils or successors. As one of the first proponents of the English novel he set a standard in prose, like Milton and Shakespeare in poetry, that has never been excelled, and rarely equalled, by moderns. Later writers have no more improved upon his style than modern poets have improved upon Shakespeare's.

Download or read book The History of Henry Fielding Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Wilbur L. Cross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Henry Fielding, Vol. 2 These books were studied and annotated in some cases as a preparation for treatises of his own. Fielding was in train ing for the Bench. Circumstances, however, checked his immediate ambi tions. The Ministry that had been patched up after the fall of Walpole was held in contempt by the politicians of both the Whig factions from which it had been formed. Consequently it had to face a torrent of abuse from the friends of Walpole, who wished to paralyze it, and from the members of the old Opposition, who were angry be cause their real leaders were left out. In an anonymous Letter to a Friend in the Country, which appeared in April, 1743, the author declared that at no time in his memory had there ever been afloat so many scurrilous libels, lampoons, and ballads violating all truth and decency. Much of this scandal was laid to Fielding, notwithstanding his solemn promise in the preface to the Miscellanies.
