Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address on Evolution and the Pathological Importance of Lower Forms of Life: Delivered Before the Graduating Class of the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, May 1, 1886 According to the doctrine of the evolution of life, living beings have been derived from one another, the most complex and highest forms of plants and animals being the slowly modified descendants of less complex plants and animals, while these were the slowly mod ified descendants of still less complex forms, and so on until we go back to the earliest and simplest plants and animals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Life and Evolution The evidence as to the possibility of spontaneous generation at the present time is entirely negative. All of the alleged successful experiments in this direction have been shown to be the result of er rors, and as yet no successful attempts have been made to produce living matter by artificial means. So far as we know at the present time, all living things arise from preexisting ones by some form of reproduction. It is, however, the general belief of biologists, that at some remote period living mat ter arose from inorganic elements. The theory that living germs were brought to the earth from somewhere in space is not generally accepted; and the criticism has been made of this view that, after all, it does not explain the origin of life, but merely the advent of life upon the earth. This book was released on 2017-05-14 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life, or Causes of Change in Animal Forms: A Study in Biology The great question of The Evolution of Life upon the earth, and the causes that have led to the successive changes in animal forms, is one that should be treated from an anatomical and a physiological point of view. Scientists have hitherto spoken of these changes that have taken place, and have concurred in the opinion that the lower forms of life have advanced in the scale of development, and in time have given rise to higher and newer forms. It is believed and generally accepted that the protoplasmic cell was the first vital organism that appeared upon the earth - that, following this in order came the protozoans, the fishes, the reptiles, the marsupials, the mammals, the higher apes, and finally man, but no attempt has ever been made, as far as I know, to explain the physiological causes of these changes in the anatomy of the animal kingdom. It is only a part of the truth to say that a reptile was evolved from a fish, a mammal from a reptile, and man from the higher apes. But this is not enough. The world is advancing to that point when it demands to know [1010 these changes took place, by what physi ological process they occurred, and what was the reason that induced them to change. It is this great point that I have endeavored to explain, - how far, and how well I have succeeded, I leave others to judge. If any thing is left unsaid or unexplained it may serve as a stimulus to future writers to finish the work I have planned out. I have written this work from a physi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Plants: Their Forms, Growth, Reproduction, and Distribution Although the authors of the Flora had no such purpose in view, their works furnished the starting-point for a real history of the vegetable world. A com parison of the Floras of neighbouring regions shows that certain plants inhabit a greater, others a lesser area; that the boundaries of the species confined to a distinct district coincide with territories inhabited by various races of mankind; that the boundaries of this and that species coincide and stand in relation to various climatic and other conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freaks and Marvels of Plant Life; Or Curiosities of Vegetation Text-books remind us of the importance of the vegetable world in its relationship to the animal. They also illustrate the grandeur and beauty which the plant has conferred on the world. It is difficult to form any adequate conception of the vast extent and unlimited variety of vegetable life. All we can do is to pick up here and there some object of special interest, gaze at it, marvel at it, try to com prehend it, if we can, and then pass on, leaving behind us a trackless ocean of wonderful things, to be picked up by our successors, and marvelled at as we have done. It will be very long before the store house is exhausted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Plant Life: With Special Reference to Form and Function Outlines of Plant Life has been prepared at the request of the publishers to meet the wants of those schools which can give only a part of a year to botany and prefer a simpler text than the authors earlier work. To simplify the already elementary Plant Life has not been easy. The present book differs from the former one chiefly in (1) the omission of all account of the minute anatomy of plants, upon the assumption that no laboratory work with the compound microscope is possible; (2) in the elimination of the greater part of the chapter on sexual reproduction because of the difficulty of comprehending its processes and their significance without laboratory study, which is almost impossible in many schools under existing conditions of time and equipment; (3) in the omission of some of the less important paragraphs here and there, and the reduction of others to small type, indicating at a glance parts which may be omitted without interrupting the continuity of the discussion. The parts on Physiology and Ecology are less changed than others, because these are the subjects toward which, happily, elementary study is being more and more directed, since they give meaning to the study of form and structure. The study of the parts of a loom may be interesting in itself, but it becomes of the greatest significance when it enables the student to understand the working of the machine and the output of the factory. Book Heredity and Evolution in Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heredity and Evolution in Plants Classic Reprint written by C. Stuart Gager and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity and Evolution in Plants Chapters X, Geographical Distribution, and XIII, The Great Groups of Plants, and the Bibliography are new. N o attempt has been made to cite the voluminous periodical literature in the Bibliography, but needless to state, this has been freely consulted and drawn upon. Numerous citations are given as foot-notes, especially in Chapter X. In going over the chapters it also became evident that since, in order to read them understandingly, one must have a clear conception of the facts of the lift history of a vascular plant, it would be best to introduce from the Fundamentals of Botany the three chapters (viz. XII XIV) on the life history of the fern. As stated in the Preface to that book, while the ultimate problem of botany is the development of the kingdom of plants, the more immediate and fundamental problem is the development of the individual plant. Ontogeny is fundamental because without a knowledge of its processes the processes of phylogeny cannot be comprehended. Phylogeny is the ultimate problem because its complete solution in volves an orderly description of all the phenomena of plant life, and their relation to each other. The author is specially indebted to Dr. 0. E. White, curator of plant breeding in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, for a careful reading of the entire manuscript and for many valuable suggestions; also to Mr. Norman Taylor, curator of plants, in connection with Chapter X, and to Dr. Alfred Gundersen, associate curator of plants in the same institution, for numerous constructive criticisms in connection with Chapter XIII. The diagram show ing the apparent affinities and approximate geological distribution of the main groups of vascular plants (p. Book First Studies of Plant Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Studies of Plant Life Classic Reprint written by George Francis Atkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Studies of Plant Life is written with a truly heart-warming purpose. Written by a distinguished academic but pitched at a level which is designed to allow a teacher to captivate a child in the earliest years of school. Atkinson takes the view that reasoning and 'why?' questions are suitable and appropriate for even the tiniest children and should not be held in reserve for a later date. It centres on an understanding of the 'life history' of a plant rather than tedious and traditional encouragements to rote learn and exclude context. George Francis Atkinson tells us in a startling modern way that a child does not best learn about a flower by uprooting it, dissecting and classifying it. Rather they should plant a seed, find out how it germinates, watch it grow, learn about its food, see how it breathes, reproduces and ultimately dies back. For as the author states 'When the child has once become acquainted with the conditions and necessities of plant life, how different will the world seem to him.' The book begins and progresses in an intuitive way. It begins with the particular characteristics of seeds and their peculiarities and progresses all the way on to the root systems, the changing colours of the leaves on trees and the bright momentary flowers and bids by plants for pollination and reproduction. Small engaging experiments suitable for independent learners, homeschooling or teachers in a classroom are outlined and encouraged, further tying the book to an inclusive ethos of hands on learning. A child could hardly fail to fall in love with botany when taught from this book but an adult has scarcely more opportunity to avoid being enthralled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Evolution of Plants In the present volume I have endeavored to present in as untechnical a manner as seemed feasible the more striking facts bearing upon the evolution of plant forms. While there are numerous excellent text-books in which most of the statements here given are clearly presented, there is none, at least in English, so far as I am aware, where a connected account of the development of the plant kingdom from an evolutionary standpoint has been attempted. Of course every modern system of classification is based upon the assumption of a genetic connection between the different groups, and must take into account the origin of plant forms; but these phylogenetic problems are necessarily subordinated in the general text-books. Moreover, these textbooks are, for the most part, avowedly prepared for the use of botanical students alone. It seemed to the writer that an accurate, if somewhat general, and not strictly technical, statement of our present knowledge concerning the data from which the genealogical history of the vegetable kingdom may be traced, might be of interest not only to such botanists as have not concerned themselves specially with this phase of the science, but also to zoologists, and those general readers who are interested in biological problems.
