Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Modern Germany On the other hand, there are some circumstances which may well afford assurance in circles alarmed by the extent and causes of German competition. Hitherto the German industrialist has enjoyed specially favourable costs of production, notably owing to the lower wages paid and the longer hours worked, but the existing relationships between capital and labour afford no reason for assuming that this advantage will always continue in the same measure as hitherto. Owing to a variety of causes Germany is also fast losing its character as a cheap country; its people are no longer satisfied with the old simple life; they may have larger incomes than formerly, but they also spend more. This breaking with the old spirit of frugality and renunciation may imply a rising standard of civilization; it is certain that the effect is to increase such important elements in the cost of production as salaries and wages, interest, and profit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of Modern Germany: Six Public Lectures Delivered in Chicago in 1915 HE following six lectures were delivered in the year 1915 at the invitation of the University Lecture Association (in cooperation with the University of Chi cago) In preparing them for publication I considered myself free to reshape them, to add, subtract, and fuse, with a view to presenting as close and connected a story of the evolution of modern Germany as was possible under the circumstances. Various features have been added Footnotes, Maps, a Select Bibliography, and a body of eight Appendices of which I entertain the hope that they will be found, each in its own way, to supplement and enhance the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Germany: Its Rise, Growth, Downfall and Future The Hohenzollern rulers, considering the country their property, administered it in accordance with ancient custom as if it were a huge estate. They directed absolutely, and as a rule in person, the army, the civil administration, the foreign and domestic policy of the State, industry, trade, and commerce, the Protestant and the Roman Catholic Churches, the schools, the universities, and the press. They not only controlled and directed all the activities of the State, but they moulded the character of the people and controlled the speech, thought, and action of the citizens from the cradle to the grave. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Germany: Her Political and Economic Problems, Her Foreign and Domestic Policy, Her Ambitions, and the Causes of Her Success, Third and Very Greatly Enlarged Edition, Completely Revised and Brought Up to February 1999 The fifth edition of Modern Germany is practically a new book. The last four chapters, containing about a hundred pages, have been added. They deal with the War, its causes and probable consequences, and I venture to think they should be of particular interest at the present moment. In Chapter XXXII, The Ultimate Ruin of Germany, a pessimistic forecast of that country's future is given, While Chapter XXXIII, How the Military Rules Germany, sheds a great deal of light upon the hidden causes of the War. I would draw special attention to Chapter XXXIV, The German Customs of War, and Chapter XXXV, Rules of the Hague Convention. Their perusal will enable every reader to ascertain for himself whether Germany has observed the international laws of war and her own war regulations or whether she has violated either. Book The Oxford Handbook of Modern German History

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Modern German History written by Helmut Walser Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive, multi-author survey of German history that features cutting-edge syntheses of major topics by an international team of leading scholars. Emphasizing demographic, economic, and political history, this Handbook places German history in a denser transnational context than any other general history of Germany. It underscores the centrality of war to the unfolding of German history, and shows how it dramatically affected the development of German nationalism and the structure of German politics. It also reaches out to scholars and students beyond the field of history with detailed and cutting-edge chapters on religious history and on literary history, as well as to contemporary observers, with reflections on Germany and the European Union, and on 'multi-cultural Germany'. Covering the period from around 1760 to the present, this Handbook represents a remarkable achievement of synthesis based on current scholarship. It constitutes the starting point for anyone trying to understand the complexities of German history as well as the state of scholarly reflection on Germany's dramatic, often destructive, integration into the community of modern nations. As it brings this story to the present, it also places the current post-unification Federal Republic of Germany into a multifaceted historical context. It will be an indispensable resource for scholars, students, and anyone interested in modern Germany.
