Book The Evolution of Industrial Systems

Download or read book The Evolution of Industrial Systems written by Timothy Leggatt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1985, tackles simultaneously three major questions about the course of industrial evolution: what are the features of the industrial systems that have developed outside Western capitalism? What are the salient evolutionary developments now occurring in all advanced capitalist systems? What light can social theory throw upon the evolution of industrial systems thus far and in the future? In answering these questions the author provides an exposition of how the Soviet system works and how the Japanese system developed; a critical analysis of three issues of major contemporary concern – the control of giant corporations, the impact of automation, and the shift to service employment; and a commentary on the theories of classical and contemporary social thinkers. Concluding with his own conceptualisation of the determinants of industrial evolution, the author also offers his own evaluation of the needs of the advanced industrial societies.

Book The Fourth Industrial Revolution

Download or read book The Fourth Industrial Revolution written by Klaus Schwab and published by Currency. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-renowned economist Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, explains that we have an opportunity to shape the fourth industrial revolution, which will fundamentally alter how we live and work. Schwab argues that this revolution is different in scale, scope and complexity from any that have come before. Characterized by a range of new technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, the developments are affecting all disciplines, economies, industries and governments, and even challenging ideas about what it means to be human. Artificial intelligence is already all around us, from supercomputers, drones and virtual assistants to 3D printing, DNA sequencing, smart thermostats, wearable sensors and microchips smaller than a grain of sand. But this is just the beginning: nanomaterials 200 times stronger than steel and a million times thinner than a strand of hair and the first transplant of a 3D printed liver are already in development. Imagine “smart factories” in which global systems of manufacturing are coordinated virtually, or implantable mobile phones made of biosynthetic materials. The fourth industrial revolution, says Schwab, is more significant, and its ramifications more profound, than in any prior period of human history. He outlines the key technologies driving this revolution and discusses the major impacts expected on government, business, civil society and individuals. Schwab also offers bold ideas on how to harness these changes and shape a better future—one in which technology empowers people rather than replaces them; progress serves society rather than disrupts it; and in which innovators respect moral and ethical boundaries rather than cross them. We all have the opportunity to contribute to developing new frameworks that advance progress.

Book The Evolution of Industrial Districts

Download or read book The Evolution of Industrial Districts written by Giulio Cainelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian industrial districts (IDs) recently attracted international attention because their performance during the last few decades contradicted the alleged weakness of industrial structures based on SMEs in "traditional" sectors. The book analyses some developments taking place in Italian IDs and local systems of production that can represent a new stage of evolution for the backbone of the Italian economy. Based on the extensive use of original databases three main trajectories of change in IDs are presented. The first trajectory is the increasing role of "groups" of manufacturing SMEs arising from mergers and acquisitions as well as spin-off growth processes at the "family firms" level. The second one is the consolidation of innovation capabilities in IDs. And the third one is the internationalisation process of Italian IDs through both trade and foreign direct investment. The essays suggest that Italian IDs are again evolving by coherent adaptations which will have, however, uncertain outcomes.

Book Industrial Evolution

Download or read book Industrial Evolution written by Karl Bücher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Evolution The present stimulating volume, which in the original bears the title Die Entstehung der Volkswirt-schaft (The Rise of National Economy), gives the author's conclusions on general industrial development. Somewhat similar ground has been worked over, among recent economic publications, alone by Professor Schmoller's comprehensive Grundrisz der allgemeinen Volkswirtschafts-lehre, Pt. I. But the method of treatment and the results of the present work allow it to maintain its unique position. Chapters I. and II. outline the prominent features of primitive economic life in the tropical zone. These realistic accounts of the "pre-economic stage of industrial evolution," preceding the dawn of civilization, ably emphasize the kinship of economics and ethnology. In chapter III. he presents brilliantly and concisely the suggestive series of economic developmental stages of household, town and national economy, based on the industrial relation of producer to consumer; and Chapter IV. offers a masterly survey of industrial systems - domestic work, wage-work, handicraft, commission work (house industry), and the factory. With these chapters may be classed Chapter V. The Decline of the Handicrafts. The remaining chapters analyze more specifically, from the viewpoints of the individual and society, some of the great processes of industrial evolution: union and division of labour; the intellectual integration of society as effected by the press; the formation of social classes; and the further adjustment of labour through internal migrations of population. At the same time they enrich economic terminology with many telling expressions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Evolutionary Patterns of Local Industrial Systems

Download or read book Evolutionary Patterns of Local Industrial Systems written by Fiorenza Belussi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulished in 2000, a selection of contributions presented in 1998 at the conference of Udine entitled, "The Development of Industrial Districts in Italy". The theoretical aim of the book is to explain the dynamic mechanism of the growth of Italian "industrial districts" shifting attention from "Marshallian industrial districts", where focus is not just on the decentralization of production among small-batch firms. Determinant factors explaining growth seem related to the ways in which firms explore the markets, learn tacit knowledge, network with subcontractors and make incremental innovations. In substance, the work offers a cognitive approach to the issue of industrial districts.
