Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Decorative Art: An Essay Upon Its Origin and Development as Illustrated by the Art of Modern Races of Mankind In presenting this short and, as I am well aware, imperfect essay to the public, I feel that it is necessary to say a few words in justification of my action. Although, for a proper comprehension of the growth of Art, it is necessary that its evolution should be studied from its very simplest beginning, this aspect of the subject has hardly been touched upon by writers of so-called 'Histories of Art.' In these, frequently very excellent works, the history of art is traced back perhaps to Assyrian and Ancient Egyptian civilisations, and a few writers dwell briefly upon the characteristics of modern Savage Art. Few of them, however, offer any study of the Art of the more primitive of the living races of mankind, with a view to explaining, by a process of reasoning from the known to the unknown, the first efforts of Primaeval Man to produce objects which should be pleasing to the eye, and gratify his growing aesthetic feelings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Decorative Art In the series of papers of which this is the first, I purpose giving a brief but succinct sketch of the whole field of decorative art, from the earliest times to the present, taking its rise and growth in due chronological order. The history of decorative art is essentially the history of an evolution. That being conceded, I shall take a backward glance at the beginning of humanity upon the earth, when decorative art was necessarily in its infancy. Here it may be borne in mind that, as it has never proceeded beyond this stage with the savage tribes of modern times, there will be found among the Polynesians of the present day much the same rude description of ornaments as are to be met with amongst the pre-Adamite autochthones and the people of the Swiss lake dwellings. The human animal, even in its lowest and most savage phases, has a natural tendency to form and to accumulate articles of a decorative character. For my first illustration I will go back to the Stone Period, long anterior to all human history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Nineteenth Century Design

Download or read book Nineteenth Century Design written by Clive Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is volume one in a four-volume edition of primary source materials that document the histories of design across the long nineteenth century. Each volume is arranged by appropriate sub-themes and it is the first set of primary sources to be gathered together in this comprehensive and accessible format. Design refers to more than simply products and personalities or even cultural ideas, it involves consideration of ways of design thinking and applications as well as the philosophies and the other disciplines that impinge upon it. Here, the first volume discusses the theories and discourses that underpinned nineteenth-century design, ranging from design reform to aesthetics, and from the question of ornament to design education. The volumes will be of interest to a range of scholars and students, including those in art and design history, visual culture, and nineteenth-century material culture. They will also be of interest to a broad range of scholars working in areas including aesthetics, gender, politics and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than focusing on German philosophy or the French avant-gardes, as many books on the history of aesthetics do, Teukolsky takes up British responses to modern art controversies, thus providing a unique view on the development of artistic forms and art history. She considers the canonical writing of authors like John Ruskin, Walter Pater, and Oscar Wilde alongside texts belonging to the rich field of Victorian print culture--gallery reviews, scientific treatises, satirical cartoons, advertisements, and early photography monographs among them. Spanning the years 1840 to 1910, her argument also adds substance to our understanding of the transition from Victorianism to modernism, a period of especially lively exchange between artists and intellectuals, here narrated with careful attention given to the historical particularities and real events that stamped their imprint on such interactions.
