Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution and Distribution of Fishes In 1918 the writer published a volume that was entitled "The Causes and Course of Organic Evolution." A section of it was devoted to an inquiry into the environal relation of plants and animals, as determining largely their distribution in time and space. The conclusion was then reached, that organisms evolved first in freshwater areas, and only by degrees spread into marine surroundings. During his inquiries the author gradually concluded that fishes might form the most important biological group by which to test the value of such a conclusion. For in the volume named he presented short details of their past and present history, which seemed to indicate that they at first evolved amid freshwater surroundings. Field studies also made by the writer during his earlier scientific career and subsequently, strongly pointed in like direction. But some details that either weakened the position, or that claimed further investigation, accumulated amid the abundant evidence that proved to be favorable. The writer therefore resolved to make as thorough a comparison as possible of the groups of fishes, and even of specific genera amongst these. The outcome is seen in part in the present volume, which represents the almost continuous labors of the past six years. As the author pursued his detailed researches, some originally puzzling conditions gradually began to have a definite meaning attached to them. Thus the presence of abundant fossilized fish remains in zones of cannel coal, and their absence from ordinary coal strata; the like occurrence of freshwater fishes and of related organisms ecologically in the oil shales of the Edinburgh Coal Field that the writer studied for years in his earlier career; the peculiar character, the chemical composition, and the fossilized fish remains, of the marls that he studied in mature years from New Jersey to Florida, all had welcome light thrown on them, at the same time that the evolutionary history of fishes unfolded in its manifold ramifications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Food and Game Fishes of New York: Notes on Their Common Names, Distribution, Habits and Mode of Capture The State is greatly diversified in contour and has an extensive water area. Its drainage systems are the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain, the St. Lawrence, the Ohio Basin, the Susquehanna, the Delaware, the Hudson, with such adjacent small streams as the Passaic, Hackensack, Walkill and Bronx, and the great inland lakes, nearly all of which communicate with Lake Ontario. Long Island is richer in fishes than the rest of the State, but its species are chie y marine; its fresh waters contain few kinds and of those about one-half are recent introductions. Book An Annotated List of Puget Sound Fishes Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Annotated List of Puget Sound Fishes Classic Reprint written by Trevor Kincaid and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Annotated List of Puget Sound Fishes So many inquiries have been made in recent years in regard to our native fishes, it was deemed advisable to publish a brief popular survey of our fish fauna for the benefit of those interested in the marine life of. This region. The most recent list of the species of fish found in Puget Sound was published by Professor E. C. Starks of Stanford University in 1911. He enumerates 168 forms of fish' life known to exist in our waters or recorded from contiguous Canadian territory with the presumption that they occur in Puget Sound. Several species have come to light since his paper was published and there is little doubt the number of kinds of fish in this region will be increased to at least 200 in the near future. Many of the species now on record are extremely rare, although this may simply mean we do not know where or how to search for them. In some cases but a single specimen has ever been seen and a number are recorded from a knowledge of less than half a dozen examples. Some are strays from southern waters or have straggled down from Alaska, while others have been swept into Puget Sound by some unusual circumstance from the open ocean where they normally reside. The richness of the Puget Sound fauna is doubtless due to the fact that we have here a meeting place for two great centers of marine evolution. Many species of animals originally developed in Alaska have gradually extended their range till they reached the Sound, while from the other great center off the shores of California a similar migration has occurred in times past. Thus Puget Sound is the southern limit of the distribution of many northern forms, while it is likewise the northern limit of a number of southern species. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No environment on Earth imposes greater physical and biological constraints on life than the deep oceanic midwaters. Near-freezing temperatures, the absence of sunlight, enormous pressure, and a low food supply make habitation by any living thing almost inconceivable. Yet 160 species of anglerfishes are found there in surprising profusion. Monstrous in appearance, anglerfishes possess a host of unique and spectacular morphological, behavioral, and physiological innovations. In this fully illustrated book, the first to focus on these intriguing fish, Theodore W. Pietsch delivers a comprehensive summary of all that is known about anglerfishes—morphology, diversity, evolution, geographic distribution, bioluminescence, and reproduction.

Book Catalogue of the Fishes of New York

Download or read book Catalogue of the Fishes of New York written by Tarleton H. Bean and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Fishes of New York: February 1903 In 1836, under the influence of public interest, Secretary of State John A. Dix presented to the legislature a plan for a natural history survey of the state, which was carried out with success and credit and resulted in the publication of a large number of valuable reports. Not the least important of these were the contributions of James E. De Kay to the zoology of New York, which appeared in 1842 and 1843. Since that time comparatively little official recognition had been given to the progress of biologic study, till in 1897 the writer secured the able services of Mr Gerrit S. Miller jr in preparing a preliminary list of New York mammals. Following this appeared in October 1900 a key to the land mammals of northeastern North America by the same author, and in April 1900 a check list of the birds of New York by Dr Marcus S. Farr, who is now engaged in the preparation of a detailed catalogue of the birds of New York. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of biology is populated by numerous model species or organisms. But few vertebrate groups have aided evolutionary and ecological research more than the live-bearing fishes of the family Poeciliidae. Found throughout tropical and subtropical waters, poeciliids exhibit a fascinating variety of reproductive specializations, including viviparity, matrotrophy, unisexual reproduction, and alternative mating strategies, making them ideal models for research on patterns and processes in ecology, behavior, and evolution. Ecology and Evolution of Poeciliid Fishes is a much-needed overview of the scientific potential and understanding of these live-bearing fishes. Chapters by leading researchers take up a wide range of topics, including the evolution of unisexual reproduction, life in extreme environments, life-history evolution, and genetics. Designed to provide a single and highly approachable reference, Ecology and Evolution of Poeciliid Fishes will appeal to students and specialists interested in all aspects of evolutionary ecology.

Book Adaptation and Evolution in Marine Environments Volume 1

Download or read book Adaptation and Evolution in Marine Environments Volume 1 written by Guido di Prisco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poles undergo climate changes exceeding those in the rest of the world in terms of their speed and extent, and have a key role in modulating the climate of the Earth. Ecosystems adapted to polar environments are likely to become vulnerable to climate changes. Their responses allow us to analyse and foresee the impact of changes at lower latitudes. We need to increase our knowledge of the polar marine fauna of continental shelves, slopes and deep sea, as identifying the responses of species and communities is crucial to establishing efficient strategies against threats to biodiversity, using international and cross-disciplinary approaches. The IPY 2007-2009 was a scientific milestone. The outstanding contribution of Marine Biology is reflected in this volume and the next one on “Adaptation and Evolution in Marine Environments – The Impacts of Global Change on Biodiversity” from the series “From Pole to Pole”, making these volumes a unique and invaluable component of the scientific outcome of the IPY.
